SU would have collapsed anyway. Not because of Gorby but because it was as it was. SU was already crumbling when Gorby became the president of SU. Only chances Gorby had planned for the SU would have kept it together. But local dictators, small aparatchiks who got the power in its republics, didn't really want changes other that the change of power - with them on the top. True democracy and freedom definitely wasn't in their interest.

@@robi-wo9mc You are 200% correct. Because of Gorby, East and West Germany got united, the Soviet dissolution was mostly peaceful. In fact the West betrayed Gorby by continuously expanding NATO

@@jameammarijr.2248 Idk. On one hand you are right about how NATO betrayed Gorby with its expansion although there is to my knowledge no evidence such promise has been given. But on the other hand, former Soviet republics are not Russian colonies, dominions or protectorates but became independent and sovereign countries which had and have the right to choose their own economic, military, political and other alliances and associations. The thing in fact isn't black and white.

@robi-wo9mc

@@fightback397 100% true. He was forced to sign the document about the dissolution of SU. Russian politicians an media wanted to make a show out of this, to film a dramatic moment when SU ceased to exist. Gorby refused to participate in this circus and signed the paper when camera wasn't prepared. Gorby could have done nothing about the dissolution of SU as this decision had been made by major Soviet republics when Gorby was on forcefully prolonged vacation in Sochi (Crimea).

Let's hope that the funeral of Gorbachev may bring world leaders physically together in Russia to start peace talks the world is waiting for. That would be the most beautiful and deserved tribute to the last leader of the USSR and being the one who extended democracy throughout Europe. RIP mister Gorbachev.

Unfortunately the Ukrainian regime put Gorby on the black list since he supported the referendum of independence on the Crimean peninsula. Gorby however disapprived the war in Ukraine but told several times that Ukraine is actually the part of former (imperial) Russia, becoming a political subject not earlier than in Soviet times.

I might surprise all of you, but Gorbachev is widely hated figure in Russia. There are many reasons for that, but the main one - he gave up all country’s interests and provided the absolute leverage to the west against USSR and Russia, as USSR successor. This was a beginning of unipolar world. The war in Ukraine is one of the outcomes of that.

The only way SU would have stood one state was the implementation of true democracy and the rule of law throughout the system. Building the modern democratic state. Instead of this, the power in former Soviet republics was tookover by local small dictators, former lokal aparatchiks, who wanted to have their own pashaluks (Lukashenko is the last original one). That's why SU fell apart, not freedom and democracy themselves. If someone is a real traitor of Russian interests, than you have to blame Yeltsin. It wasn't Gorby who dismanteled SU, Yeltsin did it. Gorby just had to sign the paper about it. To blame perestroika and glasnost (and Gorby who introduced them) is nonsense. Late 80's weren't 50's. People were tired of dictatoship, the state was crumbling. However, a reasonable mind cannot understand the majority of Russians rush again into dicratorship and even like it.

@@KaloyanKasabov Agree. Read my answer to @Igor Y below. I believe SU was too weak for continuing the cold war while on the other hand people in Russia were tired of dictatorship. But SU would have been possible if a true democracy was introduced in all republics. Gorbachev writes about this in his book "What Is at Stake Now: My Appeal for Peace and Freedom". If human rights and well-being are granted to people, they don't really care if they live in a national or in multi-national state. On the contrary, multi-national state where these goods are absent, cannot survive on the long-term.

Gorbi was a dreamer , just dreamt of a free world. The west just used to gorbi to get rid of a USSR as rival. Putin is more of a realist. He knows how the west has harmed russia politically, militarily, economically & supporting seperatism & choas in russian society. He is determined to build a strong russia. @@charana3693 Gorby would have introduced glasnost and perestroyka independently of what the West wanted, because there was no other way. SU was already collapsing at that time and there was no way to keep Russians oppressed the way they had been before. Gorby didn't want rivalry but multipolar world based on multilateral agreements. However, I agree that while Gorby was sincere in this intention, US wasn't (I omit EU here as it only does, or better said, did what it' was told to do). But thanks to Gorby millions of East-Europeans and Russians got freedom, so they profited heavily thanks to Gorby's dreams. Putin on the other hand is a dictator who understands nothing but force and violence. Once a KGB, always a KGB. But it wasn't the West that did the majority of harm to the Russia. Russian politicians after the collapse of SU did it. Should they develop Russia into the modern democratic country, it would've been much stronger today. But they basically turned it into a banana state. However, I don't object your finding west is hippocritic, but not because of you say but because it sets the terms in the international environment to its own benefit on the account of the rest of the world. And I agree that it uses double standards, while there is nothing wrong with the laws. What's wrong is that the West doesn't act in compliance with them because of those double standards. But that doesn't make Putin, Xi and all other dictators any better than they are. I can only say politics is a b***h and that there is no honesty in this world. But there is a man who was honest.
