I have been a witness to this ceremony about a decade ago. Frankly this ceremony creates an eternal animosity between the people of the two nations. I think there should be a buffer zone between the two gates so that soldiers of both sides do not come too close to each other. It is highly choreographed by both sides - see the symmetry. One way to vent than nuking each other. The animosity may not increase or go away but the event acts as a release valve - each see each other and there is hope for lesser animosity and violence. They play music, let the audience to dance, shout patriotic slogans, have fun and move on with their respective lives. I do not think either side plans to join together any time in the future. That's my perspective.
