Wipeout . Russell Bierke . Raw Footage @ Nazaré, Portugal - 2018.11.07 [Surf, Big Waves, 4K]

This raw footage shows Australian Big Wave Surfer, Russell Bierke (21 ys old), charging one of the biggest waves of the day on the first peak at Nazaré during yesterday’s monster swell. Bierke’s manages to ride the most critical part of the wave but wipes out after the massive water explosion behind him, suffering an extensive hold down before resurfacing just in time to catch a quick breath before the next wave impact. The following rescue is performed by award wining Big Wave Surfer Lucas "Chumbo" Chianca from Brazil, riding a jetski Lucas is able to help Russell until he reaches the safety of the sand. This sequence was the main highlight of the day, during the biggest session of the season so far, with waves exceeding 60 ft on the face.
Bierke with an extensive experience in heavy waves and nasty wipeouts gave the following statement to filmmaker Pedro Miranda who captured this footage: “this was by far my longest hold down ever! I barely got a breath before the second wave landed on me. Felling pretty sore today, got a good whiplash when I skipped in front of the wave, but no injuries which is good” (…) “Felt like I could barely walk up the beach when Igot there”.
Russell Bierke is one of the most respected young talents in the Big Wave Surfing world, he won the mythical “Red Bull Cape Fear”in 2016 with just 19 ys old, one of the most extreme and dangerous events in the sport. This was the first time Bierke surfed the infamous giant waves of Nazaré in Portugal, the locals applauded his “go for it" attitude after this wave, joking with “Welcome to Naza, Russell Bierke!”, since it’s kind of a tradition Big Wave surfers to get a huge beating during their first session in Nazaré, usually regarded as a good luck sign.
Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world-record for the largest wave ever surfed at 78-foot at the time, in 2017 that record was broken by Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa, setting the bar at 80-foot.

Nobody who surfs that shit goes into it with a mindset of "I'm invincible". I guarantee they don't do that. A seasoned pro like Jaime O'Brian talks about fear in his videos, and he's not even talking about a wave like this. Big wave pros talk about how they are always scared, and just try to get over it as best they can. He might be young, but he full well knows the consequences and trains for them too. That's why he can walk away from this, and you or I could not.

Sim, mas agora é que está a ganhar calo para a Nazaré. Daqui a mais uma ou duas temporadas já vai estar mais à vontade, agora ainda está muito verde para a Nazaré em dias de Mega Waves.

@@antonioromao5681 o Bierke é conhecido nos bastidores como o "Lucas Chumbo" Australiano, se há alguém preparado para a Nazaré é ele mesmo. Ninguém até hoje chegou assim de repente à Nazaré pela primeira vez, com jet lag da viagem da Australia da noite anterior, e pegou uma onda no primeiro pico daquela forma. Há muito poucos surfistas capazes de tentar sequer aquele "fade" que ele fez, com o único propósito de ficar "deep" na onda... correu mal... mas aquela atitude é a essência deste desporto... se corresse bem, ganhava o WSL Ride of the Year Award direto.

O Ride of the Year Aword é um prémio muito subjectivo e a Nazaré vai ter de esperar muito para que um dia o possa ganhar, se é que algum dia o venha a ganhar. Ouvi dizer que na WSL está tudo feito para atribuírem esse prémio sempre lá para a banda deles, por força dos patrocínios que têm. Esse prémio já por duas x que foi "roubado" à Nazaré. A 1ª na onda do Francisco Porcella e a 2ª no ano passado com onda do Sebastien. Ondas do género das que ganharam nesses anos já todo o mundo está farto de ver, enquanto ondas como a do Porcella e do Sebastien ainda ninguém tinha visto.
