Tara Stoinski, chief scientist of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, answers your questions about primates from Twitter. Why do gorillas pound on their chest? How do apes communicate with one another? Why do chimpanzees have wars? Are there social hierarchies within primate groups? Answers to these questions and many more await-it's Ape Support.

Actually, the most recent data shows that bonobos engage in quite a lot of aggression. In some cases, more than chimpanzees. They do lack the male coordinated aggression though. So they're not as peaceful as once thought.

I think there's a reason why Koba, the antagonist of "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", is a Bonobo. I think they wanted to show just how messed up he is because of human experimentation, the thought that a combination of a higher intelligence and years of abuse made one of the most peaceful apes into one of the most violent ones is kinda scary. Koba was turned into a monster by both humans and his own choices.

Also Hollywood has a really hard (though sometimes understandable) time avoiding some black and white stuff like "chimps good, bonobos bad" that helps them make the movie for the masses.

It's meant to show how the virus has evolved them ans how they defy their simplistic nature. Caesar, a chimp, is more benovelent and wants peace while Koba, a bonobo, is willing to go to war
@Rodrigo_Vega

I had the same thought. I think selecting of a species so famously "loving" for him is meant to make it plain that his cruelty wasn't an aspect of his nature or of his species. He wasn't born like that. It was human cruelty overlapping the potential of evil in a conscious human-like mind. That makes it all the more tragic and villanous.

A lot of people seem to forget that humans also show their teeth as a sign of aggression. When you're really angry you can feel your upper lip curling to expose your teeth the same way other animals do. Humans also smile and wince, which also exposes teeth but shows completely different emotions, so why would it be different in other, similar animals?

@Worm_Void one thing the Bloodhound Gang taught the world: You and me baby, aren't nothing but mammals. I think it comes down to the fact humans forget we're in fact animals because we do a whole lot that others don't and we have further developed thing other animals do so that it becomes really unique to humans. We have an increased brainpower for learning and development.

I'm sure there have been humans killed by a gorilla occasionally, in the gorilla's native habitat. If a native living in the jungle accidentally angered a gorilla and got killed by it, none of us would ever know about it. She should have said that she knows of no westerner that has been killed. Think about it. If gorillas posed no threat then the zoo keepers would not have chosen to shoot and kill the gorilla.

Her point at 4:00 was actually more significant than many realize. Yes, Bonobos are typically more docile and kind-natured but the fact that Koba was so ruthless and psychopathic is a testament to how badly he was treated being tested and experimented on by humans. I don't think this was an error on the film's part but more of subtle character development and backstory.

It's also important to notice Bonobos are just less violent than Chimps ON AVERAGE when dealing with others like them, they're not necessarily hippy apes. They're still omnivores that hunt and prey on smallar monkeys, and there have been accounts of male Bonobos being just as aggressive towards other males as Chimps can be.

it's obvious those movies tried pretty hard. And considering that in most versions, you're meant to think of the apes as aliens that just happen to look like apes, until the big surprise... the others had no reason to make them act particularly accurate. Im malaysian and speak malay. "Orangutan" is a malay word which is a literal translation of "people of the jungle/forrest". The grammatically correct malay spelling would be "orang hutan". Interesting that the ancestors of our land thought of them as people (human) rather than as monkeys even way back then. Our ancestors respected these "people of the jungle" and left them and their trees alone. Now humans have ravaged their habitats, poachers hunted them down and drove them to extinction. I don't think any orangutan exists in the forrest outside the national parks of Sabah and Sarawak anymore. How very shameful.

Chimps can be freaking VICIOUS. To us, and to each other. I heard about the chimp war between two groups in Gombe National Park in Tanzania. There is pretty graphic footage of the attacks available. One group systematically hunted down and killed the other. Used to be a single family unit, then a bad split and a feud over territory, I think.

I would love to know why orangutans evolved to be that distinct brownish orange if they're so arboreal. It's about the least camouflaged they could be. Are they just....too big to be vulnerable as prey to anything else?
@PKpaula425
@PKpaula425 11 күн бұрын
This is only a guess, but I had read once in relation to tigers that many animals are red / green colorblind, and that orange + black actually blends in shockingly well to vegetation. I wonder if this is a similar scenario. 🤔

same with tigers. we kught be able to easily spot them in sunlight. but in low light that orange looks like a shadow, or the same shade as a tree. and with tigers, we see orange, but something like a deer sees it as green.

@theflyingdutchguy9870 11 күн бұрын
@@PKpaula425that is accurate with tigers. and with urangutans the orange falls away mostly because of the low light coming through the trees. making it look brown ish

The colour of the camoflauge also depends on what its trying to blend in with IN THE EYES of the prey. If the prey animal sees less on the green spectrum and more browns, say, then orange would be perfect for blending in

According to Tim Burton's commentary for the 2001 movie, making the villain a chimpanzee was a very deliberate choice for that reason. As I recall the gist of what he said was that gorillas are generally pretty peaceful, but chimps are scary, crazy bastards and you never know what they're gonna do.
