The processor does all the surround decoding. Then it sends a specific signal to each channel that you connect to the correct terminal on the amp for the specific speaker. The amp just amplifies whatever signal it is fed. All the surround sound effects are done in the processor

Excellent video. Is there a way to calculate roughly how many watts are going to all 7 channels when you know how many watts an AVR has when 1 or 2 channels are driven?
@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 3 жыл бұрын
Not without testing. Music and movies are so dynamic anyways that its just quick spikes in wattage, but if several speakers are requiring that all at once, output will be lower. Most people say 50-60% of what's stated from what I've seen. Itll vary between products of course

Hey love your simple reviews. I need your opinion. I am currently running 7.2.2 Atmos with Marantz Sr8012 avr and also have 5 channel Emotiva Gen 3, 5 channel amp. I am really interested in upgrading to separate processor. Looking at new Anthem Avm70 coming out that uses Arc room correction which is better than Audessy I heard. Also looking to either get another 5 channel Amp or upgrade my current to support 9 channel. Do you think there would be a upgrade in my sound system?

One thing to note, processors are not necessarily better. Due to the economies of scale on receivers many brands have processors which cost more than the receiver version of that product. So you may be better off buying the bigger receiver (with pre outs) and just using it as a processor.
@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 3 жыл бұрын
Yea I used my yamaha receiver like that for a few years. The processors usually have better components in them though, so you'll get a bump in SQ. hence the higher cost. I will say, the sound is night and day after switching to the emotiva... more on that in an upcoming video

@synth505
@synth505 9 ай бұрын
The preamp houses the processor and does everything an AVR does, just without the amplification for your speakers. You need separate amplifiers for that. Most preamps are also going to have higher fidelity DAC's than AVR's, so you will get better sound quality.

That was just a dual rca cable and I only hooked up 1 channel. You'll need as many RCA cables as you have channels that you want to hook up to an amp. If you only wanted the front 3 channels powered by an external amp, you'll need 3 RCA cables. 7 channels, seven cables, etc...

Just like a receiver, the sub signal is sent to an amp. That can either be a separate amp that then uses speaker wire to power the sub, or to a plate amp on an active subwoofer.

Question, as I am still learning about home audio. You say the XLR’s on the processor allow for a ‘cleaner’ signal as they are balanced and have a lower sound to noise ratio than the RCA’s present on the receiver. But the second half of the processor configuration (amplifier to speakers) is still using RCA. I work in networking, and a signal is only as strong as it’s weakest link allows it to be. So really I’m just asking because I’m interested in the science, but do the RCA cables going from speakers to amplifier not cause the same noise in your pathway that they would going into the receiver? And great video!
@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 3 жыл бұрын
The wiring from the amplifier to the speakers is actually speaker wire. A positive and negative run of copper, usually anywhere from 16 to 12 gauge in size. Thats what carries the high wattage signal to the speakers. Speaker cables can be prone to noise as well, so its important to keep low voltage lines (speaker wire, rca, xlr) away from high voltage lines (power cables from the wall to power equipment). But the signal before amplification carried by the rca and xlr cables is where a lot of noise can be introduced into the system. XLR is less susceptible to noise than RCA

Excellent comparison. Interesting when you said it was good that the processors have low signal to noise ratio. Shouldn’t the S/N be high so that the noise is low? Also THD level less than 1% was better to eliminate noise?
@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct, signal to noise ratio is better high. I meant there was less noise over the signal path, didn't come out correctly obviously... you want the total harmonic distortion lower for less distortion.

@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 3 жыл бұрын
These are 2 separate things, a processor and a receiver. You don't hook one up to the other. The processor does everything the receiver does, it just can't power speakers by itself, hence needing an external amp.
@atk1da
@atk1da 3 жыл бұрын
@@LifeofBliss I am aware of this, which is why I mentioned the processor was not shown to connect to the receiver..aka an external amp. Can this or any processor of similar build connect to a receiver..aka an external amp? Or does it require the route that was demonstrated, a 3 channel amp or more for additional speakers? Should this be the case....totally not worth it. As a good 5.1 or 7.1 av receiver will easily get the job done.
@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 3 жыл бұрын
You're using receiver and external amp like they are the same thing, which they are not. The processor cannot connect to the receiver. The processor needs an external amp to power any speakers. Both the processor and receiver can connect to the external amp with these models shown. There are many advantages to a processor like I mentioned in the video, they're a higher end piece of equipment that will sound better, so it costs more money. They usually process more channels as well for larger systems.

Can a 5.1 av receiver upgrade into a 7.1 using a processor...?
@everythingburrito1897
@everythingburrito1897 3 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure but imma say no. The processer is just a computer and decoder basically so if you wanted 7.1 you could get a processor that can decode 7.1 audio and then you will need a way to power 7 speakers. But if you are looking to do 7.1 you could by some very budget friendly 7.1 amplifiers used I got mine on OfferUp for $35 because I scored an amazing deal. But processors are usually really expensive

That yamaha receiver msrp is 2000. The Emotiva separates msrp is 5000. Are you telling me there is an audible difference to justify over double the price? I have the yamaha rxa-3070 and it sounds perfect.
@LifeofBliss
@LifeofBliss 3 жыл бұрын
Perfect, until you hear something better 😉 theres always room for improvement. The RMC-1L msrp is $4000, so double the cost. It has dedicated DACs for each of its 16 channels, where the yamaha has 2 for the 11 channels it can process. Also the emotiva can process 16 channels, utilize Dirac Live, and is upgradeable in the future (hdmi 2.1 boards in progress for example). Theres a lot more than just the sound quality thats an upgrade. I haven't had the chance to tune everything yet and I can already hear better channel separation and voice clarity. It may not be worth double the cost (plus amplifier costs) to some people, but there is an audible difference. I'm interested to see how Dirac Live will impact it even more. BTW I love the yamaha 3070 as well, I don't plan on selling it. Theres just other options out there that are an improvement over it

I wonder what might happen if you were to open up any receiver and rip out the internal AMPLIER? any one? right the external or in this case an internal AMP which is separate from the receiving side ( receives radio transmission) or other input from low signal source dvd, aux input, or perhaps a tt if equipped with a phono pre amp. However, without an AMPLIFIER built in or separate, the sound is very weak and lacking detail, robustness, and most important loudness. at the 48 sec mark of this video is remarked at how similar the two devices are. Yamaha with amp and processor no amp. hmmm seems as you mentioned the processor needs an amp, say like a receiver with an AMP built in. since it cannot as you pointed out, colossal waste. Having more components in the signal path does not produce better sound.

you are too dense to understand that both have similar functionalities, not to mention confusing a receiver with an external amplifier and wondering if you can connect it to a processor... just because you type something multiple times doesn't make it true bud. But please, tell me more about trying to remove your amp from your receiver...

Wow. That is what I call a "PRO" HT setup! No holds barred. Now, me? I'm not quite there yet, but wished there was a unit like a typical big box store type of "processor", like a surround receiver but w/o all the amps! Just the front end and line level outputs, but I guess the bean counters figure they wouldn't sell because 99% of people want that turn-key all in one unit. Because dedicated processors are so rare, they cost more than a "hi end" big box store all in one even the ones with all the line outs! Like car "radios", even though CD's are not the rage anymore, try to find a big selection of "mech-less" aka "no CD player" in dash car receivers! I don't get it.

Most processors are going to be a little more expensive than receivers will be. The cheapest 16 channel processor right now I think is the Emotiva XMC-2 and the Monoproce HTP-1, both around $3000. You can obviously grab a decent receiver that has preouts and use an external amp(s) for your speakers if you wanted an increase in sound quality. You can always use you amps down the road for when you upgrade to a processor as well. I really like Yamaha, but Marantz would probably be my second choice if you wanted to go the receiver route
