Awesome video. Very helpful. The one thing myself and other viewers will greatly appreciate is a parts list and maybe even links to where they can be purchased online. I'm having to scroll through the video to find each item you mention to them go look for places to purchase it elsewhere. To everyone else reading this. I get it. It's a first world problem. However, when you're in a hurry to get this and other tasks accomplished, this would help save a not so small amount of time.

Jaws is a masterclass of motion pictures. The script, the score, cast and crew. Filming and editing is fantastic, and let's not forget about the main props, the shark, the boat, the barrels and that cage. Ever notice that Roy, Richard and Robert were normally built guys. Today, the heroes look like they spent their entire lives in the gym and in front of the mirror, Great project, glad you had fun with it.

Switches: A great point - for a repair or single instillation - spend a couple of bucks more and get a higher current capacity switch. A switch with twice the current capacity, for most home shop uses, is not too much. Will only cost a few dollars more. (“A Few Dollars More” is a great movie too.) The extra cost will provide a switch that will last longer than one that just meets the current requirements

An induction motor can pull 6 times its nameplate rated current when starting. So that's a lot of contact arcing.

Your not kidding about the movie jaws . I didn’t go near water for years. Even to this day I still think about the music and the fin cutting through the water. And great video on the electric motors. I work with them everyday on the conveyor and you have a great presentation on how to wire and securing the wires. Very important!

I've seen fear in a shark's eye. You wouldn't think such a fierce creature would be afraid of anything but there's worse in the water than sharks. A school of barracuda is one of those things. A barracuda can swim 60 knots and they just flash by with their mouth open and tear off some meat. There's nothing a shark can do about it either.

Jaws gave me a life long admiration and love for sharks , and I only learned recently , the story they were talking about below decks about the battleship sinking and the sharks eating hundreds of the sailers was based on a true story !! , anyways great video as always , cheers scout 👍
@timeflysintheshop2 жыл бұрын
Yes it was the USS Indianapolis which was sunk close to the end of the war by a Japanese submarine. The USS Indianapolis had just delivered an atomic bomb to an island from which the B-29 was to attack from. Due to the importance of the mission, the radio antenna had been cut to ensure radio silence. As a result, there was no call for help and the sailers were eaten alive by sharks for days until the ship was reported overdue at its destination and a search began! There was no expectation for a Japanese submarine to be so far away from Japan at that time, and it seems too much of a coincidence that it happened. There is a conspiracy theory that the Soviets were aware of the mission and tipped off the Japanese to try to prevent the USA from deploying the A-bomb since Russia did not have one yet.
@1pcfred2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's the ship that delivered the A bomb parts so it was a top secret mission. They were on the way back but not many knew they were there still. Which is why they weren't rescued so promptly. In the middle of the ocean I guess you're lucky if you get picked up at all. I think they were in the water for over 3 days? Sharks or no sharks that's got to be rough.
@57WillysCJ2 жыл бұрын
My mom lost her cousin when the Indianapolis went down. He was likely killed by sharks as the last a guy from his home town saw him he was going down the side of the ship with a bleeding leg.

We were taught to ALWAYS remove the key before starting any motor. Have seen them fly out of keyway. Best practice is to clean every shaft then apply antiseeze compound. Had 1/2 to 2 HP C face motors that bolted right up to a gearbox. My lazy boss never cleaned motor shaft or used anitiseeze so when one of his installs burnt motor up I always left it for him to make wood wedges and spend 20 minutes to pull a now rusted motor shaft off a gearbox. Great ideal to use a piece of shrink wrap tubing.

Leeson made really good motors and I wouldn't be surprised if many labeled Dayton were made by Leeson. My 20 gallon air compressor has one. If I remember correctly most of the electric motors on the last dairy farm used them. And there was a lot of motors on the silos, elevators and the feeder over the feed bunk. All that type of dairy farming is different but mostly gone. About the same time Leeson was bought by Regal - Beloit. The latter have been gobbling up the competition. I don't get to wire much anymore. It's what my son does for a living and well the old man has to step aside at some point.

Good advise on getting a quality adapter. The one you have runs nice and true. Cheaper ones may not run true. I prefer TEFC motors. I am not happy when I get a machine and it has an open style motor such as the one on my air compressor. Too expensive to change out. The manufacturer saved a few dollars. Lots of good information in the video. You may want to explain about the NEMA Frame code. The 56 frame defines the shaft dia and length, key dimension and dimensions of the foot. Dave.

Always love playing with machinery and electric motors, have some old Rockwell motors, 1.5 hp. dual voltage TEFC but also salvage regular motors ans if you remove the copper you get copper salvage price , not scrap as with just a motor. Maybe show hiw you can do that on a vid, and if you want to save the windings you can use for making coils for passive crossover for audio speakers which i do. Surprised you don't go around with a hand cart! But then again like me you will probably bring more Stuff home like George Carlin talked about!! Stay safe and thankyou again.

Nice job. I was an auto electrician and worked on all sorts of equipment and vehicles on farms, sites and on the road. Some people call the tape electrical or electricians tape. We always called insulating tape. I only really liked using on looms to seal the end and keep the nonstick loom tape in place. The problem, especially in vehicles, is it would get diesel or oil on it then it wouldn’t adhere properly but you’d be left with this sticky oily mess all over the wires so I would always be sparing with the sticky insulating tape. I remember as a 15 year old apprentice asking for a pair of scissors to cut some insulating tape. Everyone laughed until one kind soul show me the trick of pulling the tape until it snapped giving you a nice fit around whatever you were wrapping. It’s not a criticism by the way. We all work in our own way. Just sharing some thoughts.

I had an idea for your Hammer stand. I'm sure you are familiar with those 3-in circular bench anvils made by starrett with surprisingly good fakes made in India. I find them surprisingly handy in general, but they are almost always knurled around the diameter, leaving you without an edge to hammer around. So I think if you kept the varied pin holes but had a raised anvil in the center which fit into the hammer, this could be useful at the same time as aesthetically pleasing. I don't know if you do much engraving work, but that type of hammer with a flatter on one side and convex on the other is typical for some of the finer work. Maybe instead of holes to punch out pins, these could store various gravers one would use with the hammer?

Also scored a bunch of 2 different sizes of conduit and a HVAC 2 Watt motor that opens and shuts the vent. The odd things are the wires are stripped but the insulation never removed so I have no idea if it is going to work. Might even be a plant. I don't know what to make of the conflicting signs on it yet so I will have to d9ig deeper into it. I have a motor with an electric clutch on the end/. What could I use it for? I also got out to Edina for the outdoor movie Sing 2. Great starter vid on motors. nThose TEFC are also most favored by the better Cabinet Table Saws.

Very well done, yeah these motors are built to last. They also coat the windings with glyptol. A type of varnish to keep the windings from shorting out. Now i know you already know this but it's probably not glyptol to be exact. I just bought a leeson 5hp single phase farm duty motor. I gave 1700$ for it. Not sure if thats a bit expensive or a good deal? I believe they use polyrex EM grease still? Also i have molykote electric motor grease that i may re pack the bearings on my leeson 3hp electric motor. Now that i have my leeson 5hp i may swap out the 3hp motor for the 5hp motor on my air compressor, that way there is less stress on the motor. Can you please recommend what i need for my new 5hp motor? Thank you
