Brother, I just wanted to thank you and let you know that I'm gonna go out tomorrow and wire up my 81 xv750 because of how easy you made all this. Thank you so much! It's been sitting in my garage for years because I was too scared to start taking out the 42 year old harness but now , I'm gonna get that fiery woman roadworthy!

ok, so I have a fuse block but I'm confused as to where I should attach the brown wire from the main switch(not the tap to the regulator/rectifier) onto the fuse block...to clarify, I do not know whether to connect it at the +,-, or to the side positive output terminals, or the ground input terminals... I think 90% of everything else is correct with uncertainty resting in the fuseblock connections and whether I have the two wires connecting the starter and solenoid attached the proper wires "the aftermarket solenoid uses two completely different colored wires than the stock wires. Any further help you can give me or if you explained it in the videos and I missed it maybe some time stamps? Thanks!

Killer videos man! These are really helpful in demystifying bike wiring. Its much easier as a new builder to break down these steps into individual components. This way the project doesn't seem so daunting and over complicated. Once the bike fires up, everything else just seems less complicated.

Doesn’t wiring you solenoid to the coils and etc directly,instead of going through the key first, make your Motobike work without turning the key on?
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 12 күн бұрын
No. The main power is given by the key as very first. Main power to Regulator Rectifier 'on or off'. And, it also sends power to the fuse box (on or off) and the fuse box gives the power tot the coils... Follow this step by step video very closely as I explain this.

Love your videos. They have helped me with a lot of my questions and build ideas with my 81 virago build. I am having one issue, and I hope you can point me in the right direction. I was removing the starter to replace it because the gear was broken off into the case. After removing the shift lever and case, the shift mechanism pulled off of the shift cylinder (not sure what to call it). I've tried putting back into the right orientation several times thinkin I was putting it back wrong but, once it's put together, it will only shift into first and neutral. Is it because I have to put the case back together and fill it with fluids? I know some older bikes have a hydro lock system but I don't want to waste new fluids and have to dump it back out if that's not it. Just trying to save money and time. I've watched so many videos on KZbin, especially yours, and you have a super firm grasp on a lot of Virago issues and workings. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 6 жыл бұрын
Mike McDermott Thank you so much! Are you trying to shift it static? Because that won't work. You only can shift up further then second gear when you spin your wheel or shaft. Rather with the wheel on so you make big turns. Or roll the bike if you can't lift the wheel. The shafts and all won't find their way static... Have you found my video where I install the shift mechanism? You can pause the video and compare your installation. Just to make sure.

Ok i get what you are saying, but a IC IGNITER has 10 pins, but in the Kawasaki diagram only had 9 wires going in, so which pin has no wire, unless you know what pin has no wire the unit will not work. none of the part have wires or block on them, unless you are saying it dose not mater what pin you miss as long as you have 9 in
@chiefpepdesign

No offcourse not. You could go to a scrapyard and try to find one there. Otherwise go to a dedicated Kawasaki forum. I am very sure you are not the first one with this question and otherwise there will be someone who is willing to make a picture of their connection.

What is the difference between wiring a tci vs a cdi? I am re-wiring a 93' xv1100 that came with a cdi. The wiring on this bike is complete cobb-job. All components test out ok thanks to your first bare bones video. I Re-grounded frame, starter, etc. with thick wire as suggested. I need to know how to go from the small wire on the 3post solenoid to the starter relay if even needed? The cdi, to the coils, kill switch, start switch, etc.. I am using a Toggle switch instead of a keyed ignition. Any advise could save this bikes life. cheers!

Hello friend, anyone maybe you can advise I have issue With KTM 1290S 2021 new model. there is No neutral indication, no gear indicator and you cannot start without pressing clutch in, Quick shifter Active but not working, And after about 15 minutes ride on the bike ,suddenly lose power and it feels like going from sixth gear to second gear and you lose control of the throttle,no response, But it doesn't shut down, I go to the side, Kill the switch off and start again after 1 minute, And you get control on the throttle again, Until arriving home safely slowly. Last time I was in the service they have reset the computer and quick shifter plus gear indicator and neutral light came back but after stopping to fuel the bike The problem reappeared, And the worst thing is that lost of power as I mentioned after 20 minutes or so, Every time it happens I get cruise control light , Traction control,engine light, And if this happened on Rally mode, so there is N.A Appears on the left side of the screen, I cannot also switch between mode, So guys if anyone experienced such catastrophe I would really appreciate your thoughts And ideas about this problem🙏

This sounds like a complete computer failure. Since the bike is so new, this would 100% fall under manufacturer guarantee. So go back to your official KTM dealer, and they will most definitely fix this. Good luck!

Hi love the video. Really informative considering I don't know much when it comes to electricity. I was curious though, does it matter the brand or type of my regulator/rectifier? I find that always hard to answer. What the thing does is make ac current to dc current. In a certain amount to charge the battery. Since a 1985 R/R doesn't work on a '81 XV I guess it comes pretty narrow. So I darn't tell...

Question! I've got a regular car fuse and a cylinder glass fuse. They both say 10A, but, since something is wrong, one of them blew (the glass cylinder), while the other didn't (the regular one), causing a tiny fire in my wiring harness. Why? I thought there was no difference as long as I have the same amperage. :? The videos are great, learned so much from these, thank you!
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 4 жыл бұрын
Well obviously you have a (serious) short circuit somewhere. Maybe the glass one is a bit more sensative... I recon if you put a plastic one in that place, it would also pop. One them goes first. If the glass one is the first, then the other one doesn't. Same goes if you put two plastic ones in the same loom.

You can check your wiring diagram, delete the center of it and draw the lines. This will give you an idea. (See my very first two video's on how to start with checking your components).

Really interesting videos, good job mate. Do you have a conversion table for the wires sizes? I am from Belgium and, like you in Holland, I use the metric terms for the cables. Here, you’re talking about gauges, I know that is the imperial terms but I don’t know what 16g means in mm for exemple. Thanks in advance if you can help me bro

so instead of the starter button could i have a 3 way key switch so i can turn over my bike like you do with a car? just turn key
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 4 жыл бұрын
Offcourse you can! Then the last turn of the starterkey switch would be exactly the same as pressing a button. It's just a ground cable that is interupted. It needs somebody or something that puts those wires together. Like an on and off switch. Closed/open line as I tried to explain at 17:42 but also a few other times in this video like the kill switch part at 14:42.

Great video - thanks Chief. I just bought a part finished VX750 cafe racer. Most mechanics and framework complete to a very high standard. I just have to do the wiring. I'm trying to decide between the wiring approach you outlined versus using a Motogadget mo.unit blue. Would the mo.unit simplify or complicate the wiring do you think?

Hi there, I love your videos. They're very helpful. I was wondering what the thickness (16mm2 or 25mm2 or less?) of the ground wire and the 12V wire are, wich lead to the starter motor?
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 4 жыл бұрын
At 21:55 I explain the thicknesses. But, the ground wire and 12 Volts are way thicker. I guess 8 or 10 Gauge. But I can't be sure. Just choose nice and thick ones for those like 4mm.

Chiefpep your wiring videos have literally saved my build! So many things I did not understand until watching your videos. Thank you! I have one question for which I cannot seem to find an answer for. In the original xv750 wiring diagram, there is a starter cutoff relay and starter cutout relay. In your videos, you use viragohelp-Dan's wiring instructions which do not have these relays anymore. I'm confused on why you would take them off? Aren't these the things that turn off your starter after the engine/alternator is producing power? Since there are no more cutoff relays, does this mean your starter engine is always on and is this bad for your motorcycle? I appreciate any insight into this! thank you!
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Sirvinskis Hi Matthew. Yeah. Those relays are absolutely not necessary. Just follow the bare bone scedual. The starter is only on with the engine run toggle switch (if you choose to use this) plus the ignition. See and follow the leads. The coil gets a signal or not. Depending on the position.
