Dan so kind of you to make the effort and break this down. I have an M-Unit and kit to upgrade some crusty wiring on my resto -mod Yamaha TRX and bin a whole lot of components and weight I now feel much more confident about installing an upgraded system. So thank you !! I'm baulking at the switch gear. It can be mighty expensive and I do not want to have switch gear which is confusing to operate such as a kill switch or hazard lights if theres an accident and it's up to a bystander to know which button to use ? I'll figure it out but I particularly like your comment about helping each other out. Cheers Dave

One thing he doesn't do that I highly recommend is to get ferrules for the wires going directly into the Mo.Unit terminals, along with a ferrule crimper. It ensures better and more consistent contact and longer wire life at the connection point.

Bro, I got a salvaged Honda CBF300NA from a police auction last week and there were wires and splices for random electronics everywhere. I got frustrated and just chopped most of it off but I couldn't tell what wraps were factory and which were spliced. I spent about 10 hours just tracing the wiring and removing the extra stuff, but it left me without some connectors. Since I'm new to wiring motorcycles, I've been hunting for inspiration on whether to try to simplify it further or take it back to near-factory. This video came up and it made me feel good about not just slapping the ignition on and taking the time to plan the rewire. Thanks for this video. You've earned a subscriber!

I'm assuming when you do the final connections you will solder the ends of the bare wires connecting to the M unit ?? Or do you leave the strands bare and just tighten the screw to the wires to hold it in place?
@CafeRacerGarage
@CafeRacerGarage Жыл бұрын
The mo.unit comes with ferrule wire connectors when you do the final
@lassikinnunen
@lassikinnunen Жыл бұрын
Yeah you should use ferrules rather than solder them. For high current especially don't skip the ferrules. On motorbikes or another thing with that style connectors. (For someone reading, ferrule is just like a piece of metal that you crimp on the end of the wire, so when you stick it into a terminal thats screw down or spring loaded or similar the strands don't start moving and the connection doesn't become loose and form a resistance that will then get hot when large current is passing through it. It doesn't really matter all that much for signal wires.).

Somewhat confused. If everything was working fine, why go through all this trouble and, it seems, significant expense to end up in the same place. If everything was not fine, this will not solve that, at least not for sure, so you will still have a problem.

If you have a used bike that everyone has chopped on. These will solve all the reliability issues from said butchered harness. Not to mention you can get rid of the fifty miles of wire and several plugs that Harley Davidson shoves in their head light bucket. That shits ridiculous. Couldn’t even get the headlight back in.

Hi Dan. Great video (also loved the one on the Mo.unit as well). Like Harry Potter, I have struggled with the "Dark Arts" for many years, which on one occasion caused an electrical fire at a petrol station while filling up my trike!!! This did raise a little concern at the time as you can imagine!! I'm currently resto/modding a KZ750/4 into a Café Racer, here in Cairns, Queensland, so I have found your videos to be extremely useful! Keep up the excellent work. L&R Andrew

@WowItzAkina
@WowItzAkina 4 ай бұрын
@@brettjacquin3833 good luck man, I’d recommend redoing ground wires too while your at it. Look into starter mods for these things, the starters on them are notoriously inconsistent, if you want to make carb tuning easier, drop the $450-$500 on a MINUKI single carb conversion kit, also if you have a 750, swap the battery to one for a virago 920. They’re the same size, but the 920 has higher CCA and higher AH which will make your starter more reliable. Make your own harness with the 1st gen viragos, the stock harnesses are absolute dogshit messes. Hated every bit of it.

@MuradAkram

Thank you for this very informative short video! I would like to request/recommend, if/when it's possible you should make a video series to cover how to rewire a specific motorcycle model from start to end, listing out all the necessary parts needed per bike model. For Example: I am currently working on a 1979 Suzuki GS850G and would love to get rid of the old wiring harness, use upgraded LED lights and this new technology you are showcasing in this video, but my electrical skills are "0" but I am good in following step by step directions and I bet there are many like myself out there that are good with the mechanical restoration part of a bike but are rusty when it comes to electrical stuff. So, a video stepping through this upgrade process would help a lot of folks save time/money and frustration and they will not end up with extra part at the end of this upgrade process.

Hi Love your videos, they have been a great help and have inspired me to build my own cafe racer. I have a Honda CX500E. I bought the M-Unit, and trying to wire up the horn, lights, indicators (turn signals) etc, it's my first time trying to do anything like this. Can you advise if I need to have a separate ground wire for each of the components, or can I solder them all together and then have just one wire going to ground, hope this makes sense. Thanks

As long as all earth wires go back to the frame of the bike it really won't matter how you do it. I like to have a little earth bus so its neet and you don't have 10 wires all bunched together. Google earth bus and you will see what im saying

Hi Dan, I've just finished the same bike also with the full Motogadget and Revival Cycles pack and LI-ion battery and Rick's Motorsport Reg/Rec. And my advices to you or whoever is trying this are the following: - Put an eye on the connector with the 3 white wires between the Reg/Rec and the Stator. I used the original yamaha connector and got so hot that it melted. The solution was to hard wire it. - If you notice that you have weak starter for some reason. Run a good thick ground wire directly to one of the bolts of the starter motor. - If you are also planing to use a KN&N air Filter and stock carbs, you will have to modify the internals of the filter, otherwise it will be really dificult to caburate. The solution I found was to restrict the air flow by sticking a 90 degrees PVC pipe join inside the filter leaving the open end of the PVC join pointing rearwards. - I don't know If you also plan to do it, but I also converted the mechanical clutch to a Hydraulic one and still playing with it. Un Saludo
