Wiring My 71 Camaro... Help Required!

Today I start a tiny bit of my 1971 Camaros wiring and take a look at what all will be involved. This isn't a small task, but if you can follow lines and colors, you might just find it easier than you think.

Love your honesty about not knowing anything about wiring, I hate wiring also . Old timer told me to think of wiring like having to flow water and dams. Sometimes it makes sense.....lol

Painless is also a great option. Take your time and label everything as you go and the installation will be perfect.

AAW for the win. I installed the same kit on my 68. Don't let it stress you out. Especially the under dash, most of which already has the factory connector on it. Just take it 1 wire at a time. AAW made it simple. Use lots of zip ties and tape to protect the wires. The Camaro is looking awesome Mat. Cant wait to see it at a Tem Cars n Coffee

Nice job Matt I used to build wire harness for gm fabric tape is oem. We used fabric seem rippers to slice though to repair wires very easy. And you maybe over thing the tail light wiring if you ever wired up trailer lights it the same thing. I love the car make me want to build one keep up the good work.....

heads up on the wiring. make sure to lay put your engine bay harness b4 you put your sheet metal on. 2nd gens are not to bad. your biggest problems spots are the drivers side fender to front valance. the turn can be a pain to hide the wires. the next is the over the hump harness. I wrapped mine in header wrap and tucked it in above the bell housing. if you have the length you can always huge the top of the firewall/cowl location and drop your wires down to the distributor, alternator and starter. When i built mine in 94 there was one company that made full harnesses, Painless. I couldn't afford it so I rewired a 78 camaro harness to work. it was a pain.

Just some useful info for you when it comes to the wiring for lights like you were talking. Yellow is for left turn, green is for right turn, brown is for taillights/parking lights, white is ground. I've done some vehicle wiring and a lot of trailer wiring and that is the standard they go by from what I've experienced. Looking good though hoping to maybe do an LS into an 80 Malibu eventually. It was my first car and I got it to the point of mainly drag car and LS I can make some power and still drive on street on pump gas. Currently 12:1 compression it needs a little more. Cars looking great, the AAW harness is the way to go. I'm almost done the build on my Procharged LSX chevelle. I went with the same harness. I used the split braided wire loom instead of the tape. Much easier to work with and to add wires later. Only down side is it gets pricey.

I would run all the wires where they need to go to first and then tape it all together. Once you’re 110 percent certain the component you ran works then lock it all up. Just my two cents. If you are in over your head don’t admit defeat, admit you need some help. We get by with a little help from our friends! This is a great community, someone will mentor you!

Totally agree with your comment. Make sure it’s all in working order before taping it. Myself I use braided sleeving in areas and only tape in applicable areas.

Looking good! Wiring can be frustrating, however you can tackle this if you try, it takes time. After all who's going to fix it when you have issues down the road. Good luck! Question are putting Vintage a/c in your ride? little more wiring to boot.

From what I have found, aaw is good for a direct factory swap painless is better if you plan on adding a bunch of extra things as it has more provisions for addons

You should have used self stick vinyl tape.the cloth tape makes a mess with time and heat.
