This is exactly what I needed to know for the first half. I am doing some rough in’s for an addition to my home and putting a mini split for that room. Getting an electrician to do the rest but just want the rough in’s done good enough to pass inspection. Thank you!

That was seriously good. You can tell you could do this with your eyes closed. But, you didn't skip any steps so the average DIY'er could tackle it themselves, albeit taking 10 times as long. :) Thanks for taking the time to make this.

Thanks - super helpful. We had a baseboard with a 220 30-amp breaker, but the installer used 14/2. When I checked the voltage, one wire was 121 volts, the other was 14. It's an old breaker in an old panel, but there's a new sub-panel to the side, so going to do exactly what you've done here, and use the right wire (10/2) and a 30 amp breaker for our 24k BTU heat pump.

We're having a Mitsubishi heat pump installed next week to replace our 30 year old furnace and AC. We also have an Eaton panel, so this video was exactly what I needed to know what to do. Thank you!

I just did a similar installation and it took about a whole week! The reason is that I had to make a rather complicated series of pvc pipes and 45 and 90 degree elbows to wrap around the various ins and outs of several rooms, on the foundation under the siding, taking care to rout it over and behind various other obstacles, over to the big power panel. I wanted a neat appearance, so took extra time to piece it together using many pieces, all while being eaten alive every day by hordes of mosquitoes. Then drilled into bricks around this perimeter to clamp the pvc on neatly. The interior unit caused even more problems and several weeks' work because it is an old house with plaster-on-lath walls, and I needed to repair big holes in the plaster, and attach drywall as needed. Because of lack of modern standards with wall studs (they are not evenly spaced and cannot be found with a stud-finder), it took lots of drilling holes to find any studs, and of course only one could be used to attach the mounting plate. Making the 2-1/2" hole was another difficult chore because it is not a simple matter to neatly drill plaster (it is more like brittle mortar) without it breaking loose from the lath. Another problem with the lath is that parts of it are not firmly mounted to any studs, so it is hard to cut loose wood that is just flapping around. In general, I find that any renovation job in this house requires about 4 or 5 times as much work as the same job in a normal modern house. That's why everything looks so easy in the youtube videos, most people face far easier tasks. The last job, installing the outdoor condenser unit, will surely be the hardest part, for many reasons I won't go into. Bottom line: installing this mini-split is taking MONTHS. Oh, besides the thousands of mosquitoes every day, I recently checked the thermometer outside: it was 103 degrees in the shade, but of course my work required working in direct sunlight, had to be far hotter than 103!

Must the AWG of the wire FROM the Disconnect TO the panel be exactly IDENTICAL TO (more or less) the whip AWG? (I have RovSun 12K btu, "SJOW 4x16 AGW 60 -300v"? THUS, 16 AWG to the disconnect from unit, TO 16 AWG to panel ?) ...I also intend on using Eaton 20A-60A GFCI (code req'd) disconnect box; with 10-2 Romex and 30A dpoled breaker; 1/2 pvc conduit run. Overkill? underkill? Thx! I know a lot of ques, but main ques matters, identical wiring...

Question.....im going to be installing 3 separate mini splits in my house . The 3 condensers will be sitting next to each other on the outside of my home. Do i need to have 3 separate circuits for electricity?? Meaning each mini split condenser will have a separate circuit, breaker and disconnect. I have a 200 amp breaker box with enough openings to do it however i was wondering if there was a different way of running power to them having only one breaker in the panel and then separate disconnects outside. Thanks 😊 .

Was wondering the same. Im thinking it doesn't have to be because it's not exposed to the elements. It goes from inside the house directly to inside the ac shut off. I was looking for a video with this exact setup as I don't want to use conduit for just a few inches of line being run.

also as i watch the video, i am not sure if local codes anywhere (in USA at least as far as I know) allow for romex inside conduits, even in short lengths, has to be stranded THHN in the whip, which from my understanding some local codes does not allow for schedule 40 and only 80 if it is near the wet ground even if it is liquid tight.

@@chrism81804 To sum it all up - The MCA is the minimum wire size needed to guarantee that the wiring will not overheat under all operating conditions for the life of the product. The MOP is the maximum allowable circuit breaker size that will properly disconnect power to the equipment under any anticipated fault condition. Minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) and maximum overcurrent protection (MOP) are necessary to correctly connect field wired equipment . As their names indicate, the ratings will tell you the minimum wire size and maximum circuit breaker size allowed for the equipment. Higher currents have led to a greater awareness of the risks of overcurrent and fires. The system of MCA and MOP was developed to reduce that fire risk. Supply wiring must be rated to carry at least the amps shown as MCA. By comparison the overcurrent protection device (either a breaker or fuses) must be sized to prevent the unit from drawing more current than the MOP. Minimum Current Ampacity (MCA) MCA = 1.25 x [Motor Rated Current + Heater Current] www.electricalservicetechnician.com/how-we-calculate-mca-and-mop/

He said its 12 gauge (12awg) most popular brand is romex and its 2 wires plus ground so 12/2 wire is what he used. But you may need 10AWG which is actually thicker than 12 depending on your amperage needs which would be 10/2 for use up to 30amp.

Im doing a 220v and my mini split is asking for awg 14 which amp breaker do i need
@Smithers4
@Smithers4 2 жыл бұрын
@@adriancaldera8756 The mini-split has to specify the max and min size breaker. Usually on a sticker on the outside unit. I usually go with the max breaker number. 14 AWG is good for 15amp breaker max and thats already pretty small for a mini split so I would assume thats what your looking for. But you have to check with your unit or paperwork to be sure. Also go with UF ware not the NM-B as NM-B is not rated for outdoor use. There are others you could get aside from UF but that is most common at homedepot/lowes.

@@Smithers4i thought you cant go any lower on the MCA on the nameplate, as in if it states 10 gauge minimum, you cant use 12. (except depending on calculations you can use thinner gauge copper THHN than the MCA)….?
