Vanlife is a dream. Living in van for many will be a bridge between camping and being home. For many vanlife is a permanent way to live. In either case, vanlife will welcome some realities of not being in a traditional stick home while pulling along some of the luxuries of still being rooted to a foundation. When planning your van build or conversion the electrics will be a major consideration. Having an overall master plan is critical. But before van life, before the van build, even before the creation of a plan you have to have a basic understanding of the electrical systems in your van. There are many resources on line on how to start the van electrical plan journey. We won’t repeat those here. Our goal is to help van build dreamers to not be intimidated by the thought of starting. There can be 2 electrical systems in your van. A 12 volt system that is similar to the electrical system found in every vehicle. Every vehicle needs electricity to start and to operate certain functions. The engine in the vehicle has been designed to actually generate electricity as it runs. It will generate surplus which is stored in the battery. This battery will typically store enough energy to start the motor again after a long layoff, at which point the van motor will replenish the energy in the battery. This battery was designed only for the operation of the vehicle. In order to have electricity in the back of the van - during the van conversion you will have to build it. This is when the doors open. When considering the electricity needs for the van. Consider what appliances, lights and fixtures you’ll be wanting to use. Some may be 12 volt - or designed to work in a car or van. Some may be 120 volt, or the same as if you were in house. It’s possible to have both in your van. You simply have to build for it during your conversion. For rough in purposes the exercise is to identify what appliances and fixtures you’ll want, weather they have 12 or 120 volt requirements and then making sure you have the appropriate wire in each location. There are 3 basic rules for van life van conversion electrical systems.
