WISAMO is an innovation initiative from Michelin Group and develops an inflated, foldable and automated wing using wind propulsion as an hybrid solution to reduce fuel consumption and then greenhouse emissions like CO². The wing can be adapted to any kind of vessels, new ones or the ones already operating: Ro-Ro, bulk cargos, oil and gaz tankers, containers as well as sailing and yacht boats. Thanks to WISAMO, Michelin aims to contribute to maritime transport decarbonization.

Modern sailboats typically have an aluminum or carbon fiber mast which is attached to the deck with steel cables or dynema lines. The function of these “stays” and “shrouds” is to stabilize the mast so it can withstand the huge forces that are created by the wind on the sails. A freestanding telescopic mast, by design, has to be much stronger and heavier than traditional masts. This is the main challenge of using solid or inflatable wingsails. Exponential increase of weight limit the size and thus power that can be extracted from the wind. But one adventage is that the mast is not in front of the sail, it is placed at the center of effort of the sail, which lowers the forces on the sheets (the part of sail in front of the mast stabilizes the part that is behind the mast). I am fascinated by this technology and would love to see what these engineers will be able to come up with. Good luck!

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

When will the world see this on a production cruising sailboat?! Very interesting.

If you want one bad enough I'm sure you could make arrangements. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZTVeoWpa7l5hqM I think it might be a little longer for it to be a stock option on boats such as that since the main reason they're doing it this way is to make it a plug and play system for large boats without needing to train crew. So we might see it on some super/mega yachts like the Dynarig system on Black Pearl and Maltese Falcon. Most people who buy small cruisers are doing it partly for the romance of pulling ropes and tying knots.

Interesting. When I look at the typical cargo ship, the deck is filled with containers stacked on each other as that makes loading and unloading take hours instead of days. How much cargo space is lost with two giant sails consuming a third of the deck?

Maybe they can be above the containers.. The masts would be higher, but cargo ships are heavy so the center of gravity would remain low.
