Even when Legion has problems and narratively can be a bit of a mess, I love it for having the absolute audacity to do everything it can think of as hard as it possibly can. It actually commits to the all-out weirdness that shows like Umbrella Academy merely puppet, and if that means occasionally alienating the audience then so be it. Having the courage of convictions to make the very first episode one of the stranger and less structured specifically to warn the audience that it’s going to be VERY weird is such a rare thing in television. Unfortunately that also means it’s not remotely surprising it did poorly. When modern television is increasingly fixated not in providing an experience so good someone has to tune in but one just inoffensive enough to not tune off, a show that is completely willing to trip over its own ambitions and alienate most of the potential audience in the pursuit of the ideal audience is almost doomed to failure. I’m glad it exists as this strange unique thing. The things that would need to happen to make it a more popular shows would make it a boring one, and the show’s strongest trait is that it is never, ever boring.
@morthul55142 жыл бұрын
That's a pretentious claim, umbrella academy is good it just prioritizes story. If you want more stuff like legion go to a local theatre, those are more suited for that format, but a TV show that shirks narrative continuity, depth, character motivation, and in show logic is nothing more than pretty colors on a screen with a vague continuity. Anthologies do it better, because they at least accept the lack of continuity rather than trying to hand wave it.

The confusing narrative and alternate realities is what makes this show unique and a psychological treat for your mind. It gives its viewer the challenge to try to make sense of it and I have watched Legion 6 times so far and every time it hits different because of my added experience and changed perspective. This is what art is supposed to do as it does not spoon feed you the content without stimulating your creative mind but makes you imagine and feel things and this show knows how to make a superhero story painted on an artistic canvas. In the final episode David does not 'erase' himself and Syd (as you claim at 16:02), but rather it's Switch who 'erases' them (right before she 'ascends' fully and joins her father in the 'time ocean'). Throughout season 3, Switch has been the one navigating the 'time stream' and enabling time paradoxes to occur. All the major time manipulations exact a toll on Switch because 'time' itself actively works against her, fighting (queue the time demons) to eliminate the time paradoxes and preserve timeline integrity. However, after her death as a time traveler, Switch ascends to become a physical embodiment of Time itself. She then seeks to resolve the time paradoxes created by the presence of David and the others, basically cleaning up her own mess. That's why Switch/Time is shown saying goodbye and explicitly acknowledging 'their actions had been noted' at the end, just before she erases them from the timeline. I must say I really enjoyed Legion's portrayal of time travel (the hallway!) and the idea of having Time itself personified by entities that will actively fight to correct major timeline incursions. This concept can even eliminate the classic grandfather time travel paradox with a bit of creative thinking! If we consider a pair of timelines created by a time travel event to be (quantum) entangled time realities (similar to quantum entanglement of particles), both timelines/realities could exist simultaneously, thus negating the paradox. A 'time entity' (e.g. Switch or her father) would be required to observe/influence these entangled time realities, which would result in the collapse of their entangled state to unique individual states (existing/not existing), and thus a single final timeline.
@MichaelWaisJr3 жыл бұрын

Both of them with their differences came together at the end and contributed to the outcome. Sydney did hesitate to go against him. Infact the beginning of the show she excused a lot of things. Experiencing the consequences of excusing his behaviour is what made her stand up to him. What farok did was bad and the show did address it in the end by having his older self recognise how petty he used to be. Remember what melanie said. Its not us vs them. Its us and them,

He also viewed her as a way to start over idealizing her, manipulated her, raped her, and showed concerning tendencies such as sadism and a god complex, not to mention the daddy issues. They were lukewarm with their character motives and the entire thing falls limp if you look at justification, not to mention how they treat farouk with the way they visually portrayed him. They're also inconsistent with the rules of the universe which makes it not compelling. @@morthul5514 And Sydney also manipulated him for her needs to be met. She seemed to have very little growth in her character by acknowledging her own wrongs doings. Instead excusing them and determining that actually she was the victim. Which might parallel with her own statement in Season 3 that David sees himself as a victim. Very soon after this she has her conversation with a younger version of herself. Coming to the conclusion she was a victim when sexually assaulting her mother's boyfriend. "He turned me around. All I think of is my face pushed into the glass." She actually feels she was wronged. They don't seem to just imply that confused her about sex. She played games with David just to tell him how they love the sinners best. Only to completely change her mind because maybe he enjoyed killing some soldiers trying to kill him? Maybe he enjoyed torturing someone he believed to be Farouk? In his mind he was just doing what Sydney said. Doing whatever it took to save love. Because this is war. They attempt to make it seem like he just misunderstood her true intentions. She doesn't mean there ISN'T a line. But Syd herself doesn't seem to have a line until the end of season 3. And this shift in David's character really felt shoehorned in to be honest. Nothing about him seemed capable of the things he did. Sexually coercing Syd. Torturing Oliver. We sort of understand why. But David in season 1 would have attempted to find a different way. Tried to remove Farouks control over them. And nowhere EXCEPT for Sydney's game and conversation implied his thoughts on something like would have changed. So both of them were incredibly toxic but they seemed to portray it as an ideal relationship. That was kinda poorly done. Season 2 had a kinda unearned ending.

I don't know, but for me season three gives a very clear message about parenting, mental health and childhood psychological trauma. The way you were raised as a kid affects the way you behave as an adult. We saw it on both David and Syd's examples. Proper parenting for Syd ended up for her being strong, self-aware and independent woman. David, on the other hand, being raised by mentally unstable mother who were abandoned by her husband, constantly fails to control "The Legion": a literal embodiment of his fears, doubts, self-hatred and depression. Kinda obvious for me.

This 5/10 score was a plot twist for me, it makes no sense. I think the most important thing of the story is to show what happens when someone with a mind that can bend the rules of what is real or not, but also have to cope with mental illness caused by the trauma of having an entity just as powerful living inside his own mind, starts to gain control of his own self. The flaws that David shows in his moral character are justified by his own madness, and he becomes more powerful than ever exactly when he learns to embrace this madness (Legion) and use it combined with his powers to travel back in time to kill the thing that broke him (beyond repair, as Sydney said), he decided to destroy everything in order to fix his own self and reset his own reality. I figured it was a kind of joke on how they’d been cancelled. They only had one more season to tell a complex story and so many plot threads and jokes are devoted to telling the story as quickly as possible (hence time travel) and the only way to tell this story properly is another incarnation of Legion. Like the cult (following of the show) dissipating by demon (studio heads) speeding up time. I love the joke when Cary calls in a change in setting instead of having to show them going there or getting rescued

I hope you guys review having the at home testing service as a sponsor as it seems somewhat unethical to encourage people to not visit their doctor and use an online service instead...

I agree with this statement completely. Of course sponsors are necessary, but it's important for any channel on KZbin to do their due diligence on ensuring the company that they are putting their name behind and promoting aren't malicious in their business model. Giving a private company that kind of sensitive and personal information is incredibly dangerous, and kind of stupid.

I think the final note this review ends on is the most accurate. Legion uses unstable representation to allow for a multiplicity of meanings and interpertations that can be exclusive to one another or symbiotic. It discourses with a variety of philosophical sources to enrich its figurative language while refraining from subscribing to any specific one. As such, im not sure its right to measure how "smart" the show is by evaluating its ability to articulate a specific conclusion

Throughout the whole show, you’ve got a protagonist suffering from schizophrenia/mental illness, so of course the show does a great job at suspending disbelief and portraying perceptions the way one would expect someone with mental illness/hallucinations/delusions might perceive their own world. I really liked that part about this show!

They actually solve the Grandfather Paradox. In season 2, the one episode where we see multiple realities (multiple versions of David) there is one version of him, explaining "and that branch makes branches, and that branch makes branches...". Basically you have a origin point (the baby) from which decisions that effect the baby (his own or anybody interacting with him) lead to different outcomes in the reality -> different timeslines (the ocean). Davids story was that his origin was compromised by the shadow king, leading to the miserable state his reality is in. By changing past Farouk, making it so he wont infiltrate Davids mind, he actually IS erasing all these branches. Resetting them to a point where David can live a good and happy life. Thats why they are fading away.

The time travel logic works if you ask me, David goes back and changes the past then his "world" disappears, and from here a new world line was created. I think it's kind of like the many worlds theory but a lot more confusing.

I, for one, loved the musical numbers. The show had the greatest score of any TV series I've ever seen. And all the trippy, contradictory, bizarre stuff of a psychic superhero series by nature is full of BS as far as reflection of actual reality. There were so many snippets and arcs that made me think about things in ways I enjoyed. I thought they made it work and it was the most beautiful series I can think of.

I love this video, and I agree with all you've said, however I would like to propose a simpler alternative view. Besides all the metaphors and symbolism which are obviously there for the artistic aspect of it, all we see in the show is exactly what it looks like if we were David, we are experiencing reality from the perspective of someone to whom reality is malleable, who can shape it at will and even change the rules the world itself tries to impose on him (at one point I'm pretty sure he time travels by his own power while switch was incapacitated), I think the reason everything is so confusing and weird is because we are seeing a, reasonable imo, attempt at showing what a god might see. At the end of the day David is a mutant god to whom reality is meaningless and also he is insane, so that is why all we see is so distorted, I imagine if the show was from the pov of say Syd for example it would be a lot less trippy.

You guys have to look at Noah Hawley's work less as commentary and more as a thought exercise. There is no one conclusive philosophy because the goal of Legion is to open our minds a little to different ideas. It talks a little about a lot of topics: self perception, gender, religion(the relationship between a god and mortals), trauma and love. It also finds new ways of using old thought experiments like the allegory of the cave to convey contemporary ideas. Metaphor is used as a tool and not a philosophy of the show. It's definitely a show that you need to watch multiple times to get it. It's got many many layers.

I think a better lens through which to consider Legion is the psychoanalytic. Legion, is an exploration of how a mind (Divid's) copes on a path toward discovering it is a being with limitless powers plagued by its past and the shadow. Season 1 is about the systemic suppression and transcendence of the individual, gas lighting, with themes of love and what not. Season 2 is about the battle for public opinion generally, throughout the course of the season we the audience as well as the characters are convinced that David is bad, evil. I would argue with no actual reason save he kills a few guards, the overarching influence of The Shadow King and the general sense of fear and suspicion the show directs towards David. Season 3 is about how the alienated deal with transcendent power. We could just start a cult like many other "transcendent" human before (Manson, jim jones etc) a la the opening of season 3, however the show suggests that reframing and fixing the past is centrally important, both literally (saving Baby David) and figuratively (Sydney reframing her memory and opinion of David, as worthy of love and life). I would argue, counter to this videos claim that everything hinges on the third and final season, that much in the format of a tv series each season must be taken as nearly a standalone argument. Is the show disorienting yes, does the show out right lie to and confuse us, of course, thats the point a la season 2(mental dysfunction is ubiquitous, infectious, and so on). But 5/10? Don't make me downgrade your opinion Wisecrack to that of a RottonTomatoes critic score. I agree with you guys, the show is visually excellent. And in our current age of superhero saturated media, I would also praise the show for its interesting representation of superpowers as dance, song and other (low-tech )devices to fill the gap where normally a large special effects budget would be. What I would say critically about the show is as It deals with themes of mental illness, its attempt to BE likewise may work too well. Often a whole season of Legion is only intelligible in retrospect of its conception of mental function/disfunction hinging on our opinion of what happened (good TV IMO) rather than ethicised for us ("good guy good, bad guy bad"). Where as a book or a comic may offer adequate exposition, in Legion we are often left with just the image, distorted, perspectival through which to form and resolve our own opinions.The meaning is hidden in each season, but we are not led straight to a conclusion as is so often the case in film and TV. And arguably without a clear resolution an ethic is harder to form: Season1- Is David (the transcendent man) good or bad? We don't know, both maybe. Season 2- Are our beliefs founded or unfounded (infected or not)? We don't know, both apparently. Season 3- How can we save the world, each other and ourselves? We can and we can't? This show warranted a "deeper" look Wisecrack.

Personally, I see Legion like a painting written in madness. Its a journey we take, and like any good piece of art it can and will speak to the watcher differently on a case by case basis. I see it as the story of person who embraces the power fantasy only to lose himself in it. the final season was him seeking the only redemption he could conceive of, oblivion and a fresh start. I found it a good series that is worth watching, worth considering, and it ended well and did not feel the need to "resolve all the questions." In the end it ate its own tale, and that's fine with me and a good representation of what these tv runs can be: A stand alone thought that concludes itself.

What I liked was how David became the villain and a destructive force because he wanted to literally erase all of the past that had happened. And this error caused the time eaters to come out and wreak havoc. It’s a great example of a story where someone tries to do something heroic by destroying what they once were. Then they become a megalomaniac because they want to change the whole timeline. And then because of their overzealousness and obsession they become a destructive force without even realizing it. I really loved the writing for those reasons!
@MichaelWaisJr3 жыл бұрын
As a matter of fact, I just realized now, after watching the series finale literally only an hour or two ago that David Haller is presented as his father’s (Xavier’s) opposite in that he wants to go to war with Farouk. I’m thinking about the dialogue Xavier has with David about Farouk’s agreement for peace. Xavier fought people during wartime who were willing to kill and destroy in order to make their nation “clean” in some way. So when Xavier is citing his experiences in the war to his son David and telling David there’s a better way, it’s because he sees how David’s obsession is not unlike the misguided obsessions that caused other tyrants to start wars.

Legion is a show that's 50% great ideas, 25% filler, and 25% forgetting what it was doing and wandering off. There's plenty of good stuff, but also equal amounts of implausible nonsense. (some of which is fine since it is highly entertaining nonsense) The biggest issues come from the way characters are written. Trying to predict what any one person will do is a fruitless endeavor, as everyone seems to be easily manipulated at-will, or simply has mercurial tendencies. There are some very interesting situations that arise, but the gravity of these situations seems at-odds with the surreal astral-plane excursions and ever-shifting tone. These are ideas that deserved more exploration, but for some reason are brushed over or forgotten in favor of re-hashed scenes and musical numbers as time-filler. There's definitely some ham-fisted morality (that is somewhat questionable in it's lack of nuance or appreciation of the specifics of an issue), and a helluva a lot of strange bedfellows. Not a bad show, not a great show. It could have used some clean-up work to narrow the focus at times, because there's a plethora of cool ideas that just aren't really tied together very well. (note, this isn't an easy task with such an ambitious project, so credit where it is due) Also, Syd is a highly frustrating character. (as is people's refusal to be specific about things they've witnessed, where such specificity should be the number one priority of a character encountering some of the things these characters encounter)

I love your work guys and I respect your interpretations (especially when I disagree), and I start saying that because I dont want to be misunderstood, but I think that "Deep or Dumb" wasn't the right approach. Legion it's a bit of both, and that's kind of the point, as you well said, is in a very high percent an artistic proposal more than a (sci-fi/surreal) narration. So, maybe it should be better do a "Philosophy of" (or in this case, the psichology), so you can talk of the show for what it propose instead of what it makes good, bad or in a middle point. Legion discuss very good ideas (literally and metaphorically), and the style of those videos gives more freedom to play with the theories and bibliography.
@loganscott8143 жыл бұрын
I'd say Legion does make points, just not with pan-psychism. It's often much more direct than that, the best example of this I have is the opening scenes in season 2 where the narrator will pretty much just tell you the point. The grandfather paradox wasn't really an issue. From the perspective of someone in the time David travels back to, he would have been there and then died and vanished. It's pretty much the same as how this works in The Flash.

I don't usually cry man, but that last episode of legion got me... it was beautiful. I think you' re wrong, I think you're a fake Jared, and maybe wisecrack is dumb and not deep. I think the time travel "paradox" you point out is possible to square: the events we saw happened, and changing the past closed a loop. Kind of like the collapse of the tangent universe in Donnie Darko. I still enjoyed it and think it's about half deep too, but a lot of writing choices confuse characters' motivations and take away from any meaningful thesis about personal growth and change. For example: -David (with future Syd) and Sydney (eg, with Farouk as Melanie) are really gullible and don't ask critical questions about why they should reverse their goals and betray their friends. The whole future Syd plotline is weird in retrospect, including how much info she withholds: --Unclear why future Syd would even think Farouk could help her if he died before David got fixated on time traveling. --Also unclear and hardly credible why David, after killing Farouk, without being betrayed by Syd and Div 3, would get so unhinged and obsessed with time traveling to undo his trauma that he risks destroying the world. (The characters' odd determinism, partly due to Farouk's manipulation which the characters never address, towards David becoming the villain makes the show seem to suggest that people usually can't make positive personal changes, even with empathetic support, especially if they're "CrAzY"). -Farouk goes from clearly evil and sadistic in seasons 1 and 2 (killing Amy and manipulating Syd and Div 3 to destroy David), to suddenly just wanting to peacefully coexist with Charles & David in season 3, without much explanation. -The show portrays as justified Melanie and Syd's reactions, to their men being kidnapped, of feeling deeply abandoned, angry, and bitter towards them. Until magical plot devices change their feelings. Not supportive of the idea that people can work to heal and improve themselves (other than by time travel or getting to live an extra life on the astral plane). -Lenny is a great vehicle for fun acting from Aubrey Plaza but most of what she does has no internal logic or character development, including killing herself. Logical issues with the time demons also undercut some of the impact the show could have: -Future Syd kidnaps David because he couldn't stop time demons, but he is also able to explode and scare them off pretty easily? -The time demons are well-trained guardians of the timestream, but also seem to love (jump)scaring humans and can accidentally destroy the world? Thanks!

Lenny killing herself made a lot of sense to me. She’s a junkie who, as she says in Season 3, killed her family as part of her backstory. She’s a pretty horrible mother figure. So I could see her offing herself after going through that time flux of seeing her daughter grow up and carrying the burden and the guilt of what she is and what she’s come from. It was all so sudden for her.
@danimalfarm Жыл бұрын
@@MichaelWaisJr It was so much worse than that. She had already decided to reject her past, step away from David, and lead a quiet, happy family life with Salmon. Lenny then experienced her daughter's entire life. She knew that decision was the correct one, and being there for her daughter would be the most important thing in her life. And it was taken away from her. Salmon, their daughter, and their entire future were reduced to dust by the time-eaters.
