Watterson was a rare gift to this world, an artist so conscious of and focused on his work that he never merchandised it, he never allowed third-party adaptations of it, and he even quit the strip at its height to ensure that it would never get stale or annoying...even though I highly doubt it would have, having read through every single day of the strip. Public domain is very important. And ironically Disney got their start from nothing but free pre-established characters they took from the public domain. (Fom Pinocchio to Little Mermaid, etc). Hobbs benefited from Tigger existing, kids already had stuffed tigers. And I heard in an interview the creator doesn't really care about the bumper stickers (he said that those will last well beyond his comics and that thats what he will be remembered for, joking of course). So is the pin hurting anyone? I also feel on a deeper meta level - when a "creative" (and artist, musician, etc), makes a product (that they only profit from if fans consume it) - be it visual art, music, comics, games, etc. At some point it becomes part of the public psyche. We are part of it. You sing that love song to your girlfriend, she is part of that song. it doesn't exist without her. It sinks or swims based on us accepting it, and welcoming it into our lives. Would you tell a fan not doodle Hobbs in their sketchbook? How many superheroes have ever been created? But we bought into Batman and Superman and enjoyed those along with the creators - making them successful in the process where others failed - its completely symbiotic - would it be fair at this point if DC just said "we are pulling ALL Superman and Batman things and you can never have them again!"? I dont think it would, i am as much invested in Batman as DC is to a certain extent. (original creator is dead). i would feel fine buying a knock off Batman shirt or action figure then. - -I think its much worse when they Do make them and you still buy a knock off. Once you hear a song, its part of you, you literally cant get it out of your head. It will influence future songs by future artists. Its human history (that we tie profit too). I mean if you make a song on your own it. If you make it while working for a company THEY own it. Like Michael Jackson infamously outbidding Paul McCartney and owning the Beatles songs that Paul actually wrote... Or John Foggerty writing songs they thought sounded too much like his older songs. Ownership and creation is really super artificial. Rolling Stones bought "Cant Get No Satisfaction" off a black busker, they famously wouldn't even meet with him after the song got to be a hit and they played in his city. -- Yet years later Devo had to beg in front of Mick Jagger to get permission to do their cover of it. SO WEIRD! *Hippie: "What is ownership man? Far out!"* *Corporate Guy: "Those songs wouldn't have existed without massive investment by the record company in the first place."* To me that song has been "birthed" to the world in a certain way, and cant be caged back up. You get paid for royalties, and for performing live. But I dont think you should be able to kill it. So if an artist wants to continue to make profits from their creation - 100% do so! And if they say "dont buy a Chinese knock off, if you enjoy this "thing" then keep sending ME money for the song or the merchandise or the comic I created". I'm fine with that. But if they decide, for whatever reason, that they just dont want it to exist - they want no money - they disassociate with it - I dont feel fans should be penalized for that right? That's when I understand pirating a game or show. The original Muppet Babies will never be on TV again - whats it hurt to get bootlegs from ebay? Does it suck that this company profited off the pin or the burned discs? Yes, they didn't make Hobbs. But if I want a pin, as a fan who bought the books, thats all we have. Ironically, the PUBG keychain (or PUGB in this case!), Ashen's seemed to have no issue with. Yet PUBG does want $$ from their merchandise. They DO make merch. I see that as factually 100% worse since you can get a real licensed PUBG key-chain, and yet you bought a knock off. You in a sense stole from the game creator. Where as you didn't steal a cent from the Hobbs creator as it exists in a void where none do exist. i dont think there is a "right" answer. You'd feel different as a creator i guess (maybe). But Ive had bands contact me on torrent sites and say "cool, neat to see our album up". Where as Metallica sues a kid. So everyone probably feels different. Pirate stuff is bad. Its illegal for a reason. I'm just saying there is moral ambiguity, and to me it was funny that the pin that the creator kind of doesn't care about got a comment, the keychain that the creator does very much care about - "does this fit on an action figures head!?". Just seemed ironic.

I would say that you should identify yourself as a fake though! "Unlicensed" in big letters. I dont mind a company saying "Sony no longer makes PS3 controllers, so we will step in and make a solution for those who still need them". But DO NOT put your product in a box that says Sony or looks so much like it you fool people. Own up to being the knock off. I do feel thats important. I do also know sometimes it comes down to LAW -- if you let people knock off your product, then courts will eventually decide against you if you do try to block or reassert ownership - they do make you defend your patents and copyrights. So if the Hobbs guy wants to make this stuff himself some day - he might find himself in trouble since he never pushed back on counterfeit stuff much.

Pretty much any nature themed gift shop like a zoo's has those frogs. At least where I live in the US that is. A cheap toy to buy your kid to keep them entertained and drive you insane on the ride home.
