This album imo is Pink Floyd’s best. Its just Shine On You Crazy Diamond is just, soooo good, that 4 note melody just evokes so much emotion and it’s crazy how such a simple sequence of notes can evoke so much emotion and make you feel so many different ways. I think something that helps WYWH stand out amongst the other albums is how PERSONAL this one feels to the band. Dark Side has this sort of "grandeur" to it as it describes universal concepts, whereas WYWH is, really, a story about losing a friend. This feels like the album that Pink Floyd have WANTED to make since Syd left.

God this has been an incredibly important album for me. Wish you were here was the song my dad used to play and sing back when his job wasn't as stressful and life was simpler, my nickname for my girlfriend is "my crazy diamond", and so much of my own composition has been inspired by both Shine On You Crazy Diamond, as well as Echoes. I have spent so much of my time with this album practically in tears the whole way through. This album has helped me through so much, my parent's divorce, the suicide attempts of close friends, even just simply calming me down after a stressful day. This album has affected my life so drastically that it is almost unexplainable.

I love your PF album reviews. I can't wait for the rest. Shine On starts calm and relaxing and goes crazier as it progresses. I think they wanted to express the change in Syd with this, but I haven't heard this commented anywhere, so it's just the way I understand it. Also I feel like Shine On (Parts VI-IX) is really underrated. It is as good as the first parts IMO. Perhaps it is the victim of the pacing of the album that you mention.

Saw Them in '73 at the Palace Theater, in Waterbury, CT, on the advice of a wise, older, friend. They blew my mind, well, Them and the Lebanese Blonde. Then the day after I graduated from Simsbury HS, at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, NY in '75. Again in '77 at Madison Square Garden, NYC. Threw a paper airplane off the observation platform of the Empire State Building, wasn't the only thing at altitude, before the Show. Dave Gilmour was the reason I bought a left-handed Strat and took a year of Music Theory at University, as a Math/Computer Science major. Those Theory classes really mellowed me out for the rest of my rather intense curriculum. Still play that Strat. Thanks for the Chord insight vis a vis, Astronomy Domine/Shine On.

Four minutes into this I had to stop and comment. This is a brilliant and fascinating look into the history of The Floyd, and the interview clips included are fantastic! Wish You Were Here is one of the greatest albums of all time. The entire album, all 5 songs (If you consider SOYCD I-V and VI-IX to be two songs), receive regular play on classic rock radio stations to this day. Having to chose a favorite Pink Floyd album is a very difficult decision. Each is such a unique musical journey as soon as I try to single out one, I feel like I'm doing a disservice to the rest. Even albums that are neglected by radio today, like Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, and older cuts, stand strong. As a bit of trivia, did you know Waters was often quoted as saying the album could very well have been named "Wish WE Were Here". There is a hint of this in the Waters interview where he says he was also mourning the loss of brotherhood within the band with this album.

I’m a really big fan of Piper at the Gates of Dawn and I’ve always been very fascinated by Syd Barrett in both his fall from grace and his songwriting. And I decided to listen to this when I heard it was about Syd and I fell in love with it immediately. This is easily my favorite Pink Floyd album. No song feels unnecessary. Shine On is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard and like you said, Rogers vocals are the best they’ve ever been. Welcome to the Machine’s commentary on the music industry is blunt and haunting. Have a Cigar is probably the catchiest Pink Floyd song since Money and Roy Harper plays the character of the fake record exec very well and his vocals are really damn good. And of course the title track. It’s a classic. Everyone knows the lyrics “how I wish, how I wish you were here, we’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year.” Also this album just flows really well. I think Dark Side of the Moon is basically perfect, with the exception of Any Color You Like. I think that song totally fucks up the pacing but anyway, Wish You Were Here, it’s a classic album for a reason

The middle of the record is great too. The title track and both Shine Ons are amongst their most brilliant pieces. Sadly it’s the last record in which David, Roger, and Rick collaborated on the writing. Roger disagrees but Roy is the perfect guest vocalist for Have a Cigar.

Great job, JT! Glad you're feeling better. This review was worth waiting for. I'm glad Household Objects never happened. The Wine Glasses was a great opener but the Rubber Bands piece- not so much. And the aftermath of Syd is a tragedy. His visit in the studio marked a period they would lose him forever and 31 years later, the world would also lose him forever. His passing, however, brought an unexpected miracle- a short reunion between Roger Waters and David Gilmour. I look forward to the Animals review.

Wish You Were Here may very well be my favorite album of all time, not just my favorite Pink Floyd album. As much as I think Dark Side of the Moon is a masterpiece, I was never too crazy on its flow. I felt like Great Gig in the Sky should have been the true ending, even if that's far from my favorite song on the album. Emotion-wise, the album peaks there for me. And while Eclipse is also a great finisher, it's hard to top the screaming climax of Great Gig for me. Wish You Were Here however has perfect flow to me. Each song goes through peaks and valleys and they all fit together so well. There's no point where the album has hit its high point and I feel like I can stop there. The full 26 minutes of Shine On You Crazy Diamond is my all time favorite song. Not only are the lyrics a beautiful tribute to Syd while also capturing his sort of whimsical, almost cryptic style, but the band jams on this piece like they've never jammed before. That slide guitar solo on Part 6 might be my favorite guitar solo ever. It kicks ass, plain and simple. And the funk jam in part 8 easily rivals the funk jam in Echoes for me. In fact, there's actually a demo version of Shine On where that jammy section goes on for even longer, and I think I prefer that one even over the studio version. It's called the "Sigma 109" take if anyone wants to check it out. But yeah, once I here Shine On's iconic four note riff, that's the point where I have to finish the album. The reward for finishing it, being the second half of Shine On, is well worth the journey. And while part 9 is not my favorite of the parts, I love that little nod to See Emily Play. Really clever stuff that a lot of people probably wouldn't notice during their first listen. I love Welcome to the Machine. It took some time to grow on me, but I think it's the perfect follow up to something as majestic and passionate as the first half of Shine On. It's dark, it's atmospheric, it's mechanical, it's sinister, the synth sounds on it are really fucking cool. And it perfectly ties in with the whole theme of record company meddling and the stress of being a musician, which is what most likely resulted in Syd's departure. Having to put yourself on display for everyone to see and mock all while the record executives are counting money in the background, it's a terrifying thought. And this leads into Have a Cigar, which could have been in attempt to "cash in" on Money. However, I think it's unique enough, mostly due to it's more conventional time signature and the guest vocal by Roy Harper. If I had to be honest, the title track is probably my least favorite song on Wish You Were Here. That's the closest this album gets to feeling like it's just filler after it has already peaked. If you didn't know the subject matter and the album it came from, most would probably just see it as another acoustic song. When every other song is so epic is scope, this one feels like a weak link to me. However, I must admit that it's still a beautiful song lyrically and a nice lead in to the second half of Shine On. I like the acoustic sound of it and how David's scat singing blends in with the guitar. However, the album really picks itself back up and ends with a dynamic, yet touching finale. And one hell of a tribute to Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett.

Like Dark Side, Wish You Were Here is also a true epic masterpiece, Since Meddle, they’ve been really tight as a band, they’ve found themselves a new direction they were happy moving forward since Syd’s tragic breakdown. Speaking of Syd, the entire album is dedicated to him, with songs like “Shine on You Crazy Diamond”, my freaking god. That has got to be one of the best Pink Floyd songs they’ve put together, man they played it so beautiful together. “Wish You Were Here” is also a brilliant acoustic song sung by David Gilmour. Just the entire album is brilliant, but at the same time it’s also sad because it’s about Syd considering it was his brilliances as a songwriter that started it all. All in all, it’s a brilliant album, and I agree on the GoldFish.

ive always thought the lyrics to welcome to the machine were more like this: Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been You've been in the pipeline Filling in time Provided with toys and scouting for boys You brought a guitar to punish your ma And you didn't like school And you know you're nobody's fool this part is basically the big music corporation saying "this is your backstory, this is what we are going to tell people your life is" and it's representing the artifical stories that the music industry make the artist more relatable, it makes the artist seem more relatable to the teenagers who hate school and are being defiant to their parents, it makes the artist seem more rough and like he's cool. What did you dream? It's alright we told you what to dream You dreamed of a big star He played a mean guitar He always ate in the Steak Bar He loved to drive in his Jaguar this to me means 2 things. 1 it is the music industry telling them what songs to make "what did you dream, it's alright, we'll just tell you what to dream and write songs about that" 2. it's the music industry bribing the artist, if you go along with this you will be a big star who plays a mean guitar. you will have so much money, you can eat at the stakebar and you can drive a jaguar, just go along with this, welcome to the machine

I liked this review it was well made, personally I prefer wish you were here to dark side because it is more ethereal and mystical in tone
