My pal worked a summer job at a churchyard back when we were teenagers, and one of his duties was to even out the ground by pumping water into it. Occasionally he'd inadvertently dredge up pieces of bone from the graves below. Makes me wonder whether a similar thing happened here.

That’s definitely possible and I’m not sure how deep the burials were back then, I also think the stories would have been passed on by word of mouth and probably got exaggerated sometimes.

Indeed, many women suffered being accused of witchcraft in the 1600 and 1700s.

How odd to bury a suspected witch on church grounds. They usually didn't. Sounds like a made up story.

Yes it’s very unusual, you can google the Woodplumpton witch, there is a lot of history attached to the story, I have just given an overview.

The lady was very much real, but it's the story that has been fabricated over the many years, and I'd hazard a guess she was a poor lady, living off the land best way she could. A bit like the Pendle Witches and who were also persecuted.

It's called 'folklore'. Tales that have been passed down through generations. The world would be a very boring place if everything was so serious!
