There is no final boss battle because there's no chance anyone can defeat Gaunter O'Dimm in a direct fight. The only way to beat him is to outsmart him. This is why Witcher 3 is such an unique experience. GOTC - game of the century

There’s a lot of technical issues, and it runs into the same problems I feel almost all open world games do. Most notably it has interesting side quests and collectibles (Gwent cards) which are actually useful, when in other games they will give you two lines of dialogue or smear useless collectibles like shit on map. Besides in 2015 there weren't that good games anyway, and the only strong contestant was Bloodborne.

Zheng Wen Yu In my opinion Bloodborne was more deserving. Witcher 3 is a good game but a poor RPG. In my play through alone I experienced multiple game-breaking glitches that forced me to start my entire campaign over. Every single weapon uses the exact same moveset with no variation, and the only way to bypass that is to use your bare fists. I had tons of fun fistfighting monsters with Queen cast, but then they patched that feature out. It just felt restrictive. Hell, beating certain enemies REQUIRES level grinding. In the opening area, I ran into a wraith that over leveled me by a good bit. It was recommended that I not fight it, but I figured I’d try anyways. It was easy to fight, predictable enough, but he never died, even when his hp was at 1. The whole game just feels restrictive in a lot of ways. Bloodborne suffers NONE of those problems. That’s not to say that Witcher 3 didn’t have a great story and characters, but as a game it is a flawed masterpiece.

He's saying that Gaunter might think similarly; he only takes a human form and abides by human logic because he wants to have fun with humans, even if he is an incomprehensible eldritch entity that is capable of so much more than any human magic-user could ever dream of doing. It shows that if Gaunter really wanted to, he could throw the world into chaos without batting an eye, the same way the kid could destroy an anthill in one kick. But he doesn't, simply because he doesn't feel like it.

What the other commenters said. Not to mention it's not hard (usually) to infer what people mean by context and previous textual clues, and that is what we as humans do most of the time. We do not just use the face value of words (which, after all, can have multiple meanings). If face value was all language was, no one would be able to communicate properly most of the time with language as we know it. Gaunter is deliberately picking harmful interpretations of his victims' words. The suffering he causes is not anyone's fault but his, and if he truly does not believe that (he might believe it and just use the excuse he sells Geralt as the first scapegoat to justify his malevolent desires to humans), he needs to take a deep dive into a course in Linguistics.

Notice too about Gaunter Odimms final epic entrance, from the stairway in the sky. This is actually his only true character entrance seen in its full scale. Everywhere else in the dlc, he suddenly appears out of nowhere like a flash. Here, he knows his identity is learned enough to put aside all games, and show a real side of him. A stairway from heaven concept is no mere accident...only I'm afraid this isn't heaven here.

Yay, Witcher 4 confirmed xD Gaunter O'Dimm is probably one of the most unnerving characters in TW3, since you never really know what he's up to, what he is, what he wants and if he's good or evil. At the wedding he was actually charming and helpful, but that smile he gives with that deadly calm... creepy.

But I don't think he's a post-convergence creature either, since he's too old for that (the scholar in the College of Oxenfurt mentioned him having been around for basically eons) and the Convergence of Spheres took place "only" 1500 years ago. I personally love games where you can spend hours talking about the lore xD

+Corristo89 dude you said it best! I loved the Wild Hunt and i found the commanders of the Hunt to be especially threatening, but they were threatening in a rather 'cool' way if you catch my drift. O'Dimm was straight up disturbing and struck fear at a very personal level. Idk how else to put it; he was just so immensely daunting that i felt like if he so much as turned too quickly, a city would be reduced to gravel. Also, he was involved in one of the most twisted love stories I've ever experienced, making him that much more terrifying.

I always felt that it was a way to further demonize Witchers in general. People are afraid of them, and for good reason. But, the whole "no emotions" is somehow conveniently forgotten by those same people when they try to cheat a Witcher out of their pay and thus p*** off said Witcher. Case in point, the Witcher from the School of the Cat. He did the job, the village refused to pay him, and he snapped, until he saw the little girl. Sounds like a lot of emotions in play, to me.

You know. Gaunter is delighted that Geralt won. In a way, he could have freed them by killing both Olgierd and Geralt. but no. Master Mirror in many respects is fair in his game so as long as you follow the rules and courtesies Notice in some of his conversations Gaunter requires honesty. In a way Olgierd had an dishonest life while Geralt ( In the good ending) Is almost living an honest one. Not relying on a demon or use shortcuts to get what he wants in life. Master Mirror is some sort of Karma demon that literally mirrors the karma of mortals.

Imo, I don’t think that O’dimm was delighted when Geralt won and he can’t kill Geralt and Olgierd because he can’t violate the rule of the game. In Witcher universe, especially in novels, there are some rules like destiny or law of suprise that none can break. Calanthe - Ciri’s grandma, queen of Cintra, tried to break law of suprise and disasters came to her and her country.

Super Universe that’s the gameplay, you lose, you die. You can’t expect the story of the game will go on if Geralt loses his soul. About O’dimm, he traveled to Geralt’s world by using an avatar (his true form is absolutely in another world), therefore, he was bound by rules. There are many “things” that have greater power than O’dimm in Witcher universe, like gods (Yennefer spoke to one god in the novel), maybe those beings created rules, or maybe the rules were created by the universe itself, but there’s one thing for sure : O’dimm isn’t powerful enough to break them. In the game, if I remember correctly, an old man taught Geralt that he had to outplay O’dimm to beat him ( clearly Geralt can’t travel into O’dimm world, even if he can, he still not powerful enough, so he had to use rules to beat O’dimm, like lawyers). If there is someone who can beat O’dimm without using rules, it could be Ciri, if she can master her power, but again, it’s just a theory.

And about the gameplay, what I debated was the end of the final heart stone quest, it doesn’t have anything to do with the previous missions. If Geralt failed in the game against O’dimm, he must die, and the game must end, no other choices when you decide to fight against devil. You really expect O’dimm let you go so you can still play? To any of you wondering who exactly is O'Dimm. Well, my theory is that he is devil himself, or really specific metaphor of him. Why? Lemme explain. According to the polish legend, once upon a time, there was Pan Twardowski who signed a pact with the devil and was gained knowledge and some cool magic skills. However Twardowski was really wise and tried to cheat, so he added a paragraph on his pact. On the account of this, the devil could take his soul only, if Twardowski was in the Rome atm (but he didnt plan to go there, smart son of a bitch). So Twardowski became very famous and popular and even became bro of the king Zygmunt August and in the king's mansion, he summoned the ghost of king's dead wife with usage of his magic mirror (COINCIDENCE O'DIM?). Well, finally turned out that devil found Twardowski in a tavern called "rome" so he had full rights to just take his soul, but Twardowski escaped (well thats only one version of legend) and hid on a moon, where the devil couldn't find it and he hangs out up there to this day. Well, almost every kid here, in Poland know the legend, but treat it more as a fable. After watching HoS that completely changed the meaning. So here we have tons of references and it's fucking amazing. No words for that. Great damn job

When I saw that Guanter was able to manipulate time in that innkeep scene, I knew that Geralt had no chance of defeating him cus no matter how strong Geralt is in combat, O'dimm could simply stop time and do whatever he wants to easily defeat Geralt. So I think being able to defeat Guanter by sovling a riddle is actually a better option than fight him directly. O'dimm is just such a powerful and scary villain in the game.

Just realized something, a detail which puts Gaunter O'dimm to the top of my favorite villains lists. See how he comes down walking in the air? He comes down from the "Moon!". I imagine Olgierd added the condition of walking on the moon thinking that is beyond even O'dimm's powers and that is exactly why O'dimm comes down walking from the moon. He's implying that if he didn't have to grant Olgierd's wishes via a proxy, he could easily take Olgierd to the moon. In a way, mocking Olgierd and his primitive mind which clearly failed to comprehend O'dimm's powers truly. I'm starting to believe "The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt" , "Hearts of Stone" and "Blood and Wine" are the three wishes of CDPR from Gaunter O'dimm because no human can make something so perfect. Amazing.

This is by far one of the best story wise game / DLC experience I've played in the recent years. I like it because it offered a different perspective on completing objectives, rather than just through sheer hack n slash... IN a combat based game. It also was about the longstanding idea of genies granting your wish, albeit in the most heinous manner. And of course, all of the characters were outstanding in their own ways. To top it all off, we got this amazing conclusion to our story... from outsmarting the devil himself, to the lesson that Olgierd has left us with. Witcher 3, and Blood and Wine, were both good... but to me, Heart of Stone is peak gameplay and story experience.

+MioRaem I think it's supposed to be referencing blood and wine because there is a quest where you can lift a curse from an old woman. If you do decide to complete the quest that way, it ends with Geralt taking the woman to his vineyard to give her a place to stay and to give her food and as you explain what you learned about her curse to your butler you hear the theme for Hearts of stone in the background. The ironic thing is: Though the curse was cast so long ago, you just can't help but feel O'dimm silently watching you from the shadows; judging you for reversing his work once more. I think this creep O' Dimm is the only character besides Geralt to be a part of the main game and both the expansions (indirectly in B&W). Basically, he's everywhere!

Strawberry91 CDPR said this was the last Witcher game with Geralt as the protagonist. Maybe we'll see another Witcher who has to deal with Master Mirror at some point.

Maybe they should do a witcher 4 but like what Strawberry91 said, make it with new characters and stuff with Geralt as cameo or as an influencial character.Although the Saga may be finished, what these guys did with the depth of the story and every other elements is just not common nowadays.. We demand MORE of The Witcher universe!

Despite olgierd’s sins, it felt like it was the side effects from his pact with the devil. The Optional mission with Shani & Professor, enlightened me with an evil far more worse than Olgierd in the form of Mirror Master. Being a Witcher, I was obliged to choose lesser evil.

Gaunter O'Dimm. Tripped me the hell out when I did my second play through and really realized how much power he had. Especially when the peasant in the beginning of the game cried out in pain while grasping at his head. Such an outstanding villain.

It always felt weird to me that Gaunter O'Dimm can create a huge storm to wreck the ship on which Geralt was imprisoned and freeze time, but he apparently cannot freeze and shatter the water in the fountain

There has to be a way to win, otherwise he would be a cheat. At best he can waste your time, misdirect you, and confuse you. That's why he creates a tons of mirror which he then shatters, so that you focus on that rather than searching for a source of reflection.

No? As long as she's still lingering in this world Geralt could somehow teleport Olgierd to the painted world and they will see each other again. That's what I thought so I chose not to take the rose. I was surprised when I found out there was no epilogue to help them reunite actually.

Looking back on the riddle, I think the answer is "your reflection". It wouldn't be a mirror because you can break it, but the only thing you can't hurt is what's on the other side of it.

Of course, the answer is "reflection". Which is why O'Dimm tries to force you into chasing mirrors thinking that is the solution, so you waste more time.

The reason why Gaunter had to give him THE challenge of finding his true reflection/form/name was because that was the only way he can grant Geralt's wish of freeing both souls. The demon played with his own life in this world to get the withcer's soul and olgierds. This was trully an epic bet.
