Played the Blood and Wine DLC for the first time today and came across a little sidequest about a woman that was cursed by an unknown beggar which she refused to feed. He broke his wooden spoon and cursed her. And during that scene, the Master Mirror music plays in the background -the only time outside of the Hearts of Stone DLC. I instantly remembered that Gaunter also broke a wooden spoon to seal his contract with Gerald on the prison ship in hearts of stone.And later killed someone with a spoon as well.

True, this is Master Mirror's doing, But the woman deserved it as she denied food to someone in need. She was an arrogant rich noble who cared not to treat others well. Seems to be the plot of Master Mirror, he messes only with those who deserve it. Does not bother other ordinary good folks. Just like he kills the obnoxious drunk in the Inn. The drunk asked for it. I think he is a Genie, Djinn or whatever that deals with those who are themselves inherent of evil. Does not seem to even concern himself with anyone decent. He even does his best to have Geralt and Shani have a good time during that stupid party thing, and even gets rid of the Ghost and says you have endured this fool long enough. I am always grateful he sends him back to oblivion. Now if they would just not force you to play Qwent and lose your money..........not into Qwent and always have to forfeit as I only have four cards ..........but hey a couple swords make up the money provided you can find a merchant with enough money. Probably someone wrote that before but in Polish folklore and literature there's story about mr Twardowski, nobleman who made pact with the devil. In one of most know version of the story the devil could collect his soul after they meet in Rome (devil cought him in tavern called Rome) but first he had to complete three last tasks. Twardowski won, because he ordered the devil to live with his wife and obey her for one year and the devil prefered to run away.

They're way more references to Polish history and culture... Check out The Wedding drama (it has ghostes, and a nobleman marry a peasant like in the game), "The Deluge" duel (it looks like Olgierd vs Geralt, quotes are the same), kovirs are just ottomans with who Poland share some history and even culture (sabers, fashion), Olgierd somewhere in the game said that he even tore his shirt while begging for mercy -> check out Reytan painting (nobleman tears his shirt in front of king trying to save 3rd May Constitution - First in Europe).

Witcher 3 has destroyed me for other RPGs. I actually found myself sitting there, over and over again, thinking "How are they doing this so well, in almost every quest, on such a scale?". I know it's probably unfair to compare a set story like this to the ones in open world, unscripted games - but they're all RPGs. I don't know... I feel like something just lined up during the production of this game; script, music, gameplay and so forth. I also think one of these things is the fact that they dared to not try and pander to the masses like most AAA titles, and in the process ended up creating one of the most intriguing, crisp and interesting video games of all time.

cause they are. sure they look scary and are brutes who easily slaughter and use their little ice magic tricks, but o'dimm is truly creepy and scary for he is subtle, he pulls the strings from behind the scenes and none involved with him are not caught up in them, he manipulates and is even more powerful and in the end cannot be truly defeated. and all that while looking normal and being quite likeable on the surface. now THAT is a true villian, the writers did an exceptional job with this DLC, it's simply my favorite storyline in the whole franchise. and o'dimm could be easily my favorite and most memorable villain ever, in any media

Scott, Gaunter isn't The Oracle. And this isn't the broken vase. Gaunter's powers are far closer to that of the Final Destination Evil. They never stop, they never end. The professor said it himself - there was no murderer. As soon as Olgierd signed the contract, his brother died. That's it. For all we know, he would've slipped with his feet glued to the floor.

I think everyone downplays or forgets about the part the doctor says while blind, he saw Gaunter as clear as day. Could you even imagine how horrific that would be to experience? One day you are paid to research a person. Sure, need the money. Reading about this man, your vision begins to fade until utter blackness. Some time later at your home, you hear a knock at your door. Still getting used to moving in the dark, you open the door. And there he is, clear as day. The man you were researching. The man that even reading scraps of stories of, stole your sight from you. What's interesting about the circle shakeslock is in is that they are used to trap demons, not people...which is ironic because gaunter as a demon (devil) has trapped a person in the circle as maybe some form of taste of your own medicine treatment.

Gaunter (Gatherer) 'o Dimm (Darkness) - is a misnomer. Essentially gathering souls for the dark army. Fun Facts: 1: Based on a Polish tale called Pan Twardowski (Loosely Based on Goethes Faust story) The Story is based on a nobleman who sells his soul to the devil and there is a clause in the contract, that he can only take his soul if he would to be in Rome. (The devil takes his soul in a tavern called "Rzym" Polish for "Rome"). In the game Gaunter wants to take Olgierds Soul(complete his contract), but in Olgierds contractual clause he can`t take his soul unless his standing on the moon. (In the end Olgierd is standing on stones where a moon is depicted) 2: In the game Gaunter carries wooden spoons (He who sups with the devil should have a long spoons) 3: Crossroads are always depicted with the devil. (The saying "I`m at a crossroads" - choosing the which way to go.) So Gaunter is a devil more than the devil. Since he is doing the devils work.

When you go into the Borsodi heist, there’s a love letter in the attic from when Olgierd sent to Iris. The letter Olgierd writes foreshadows O’Dimm’s involvement and essentially confirms he is, in fact the devil. Small detail but I love how in the game, no one directly is “supposed” to know who O’Dimm is. But I felt like this is a nice touch from the Devs that confirms his identity

gaunter o dimm is based on two stephen king characters, leeland gaunt and walter o' dim (otherwise known as randall flagg.) both of these characters were based on H.P. Lovecraft's character, Nyarlathotep who was based on a nightmare Lovecraft had of Nikola Tesla.. check it out if you like psychological/cosmic horror shit.

O'Dimm is the perfect homage to Lovecraft (even if only inadvertently). he existed before humans, he'll exist after humans, and he cares not for humans except when he wishes to indulge in his pleasures which no human could ever understand as long as they still hold their "futile and pointless" morals (a compilation of descriptions of The Old Ones, The Ancient Ones, Cthulhu, and The Spawn of Cthulhu. There's an ongoing theory that he's based on Nyarlathotep (an Outer God) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyarlathotep but knowing CD Projekt Red's love of references, he's probably based on; Nyarlathotep, God(G.O.D {Gaunter O'Dimm} because they loved their acronyms and because of he's based, even partially, on the devil then there are things that he does which most religions' Devil/Satan can't do without the help of God), the Devil (from many different religions), and various demons from different mythos and religions). all in all, the thing that makes him scary and disturbing (for the player and some of the characters) is the inability to know exactly what he is and what his true motivations are. And, delving into Lovecraftian territory again, what frightens people the most is the unknown and that which doesn't care for humanity or it's 'inevitable fate'. sorry for the rant but O'Dimm is one of my favorite characters; and not just from Tw3 and HoS, but from any story I've heard, read, or watched. he's probably the best written character I've seen at that

The moment when you realize you're working for the literal devil... genuinely the most unsettling scene in the entire game.

The way Gaunter uses his words is dangerously tricky. "Do you really WISH to know?" Notice how he rarely uses the word "want" but he always purposely emphasize the word "WISH" every time he speaks to someone. Every moment you talk to him can easily be turned into an "oral contract" and "blood pact" without you even realizing it.

If you think about it even with knowledge about O'dimm we still lose and Gaunter wins. The only way for us to challenge O'dimm is through talking with Professor which will cause him to die which may in fact be bigger win for O'dimm than getting Olgierd 's soul. In a way this isn't a choice between Olgierd's life or death, it's about life of Olgierd or Professor and by choosing Professor we are giving O'dimm something more valuable in the process. Gaunter played us, no matter what we do he always wins and our desired good ending is just as good for O'dimm.

I truly do not want to classify Master Mirror as the Satan of the Witcher world or, as the professor would put it, "Evil Incarnate". sure thing is, he ain't human. but I wouldn't say he's a god either. if you happen to actually finish "Hearts of Stone" before finding Ciri in the main story he gives you the option to have your final reward be knowing Ciri's location(if you stood by while he took von Everec's soul). yet when you ask him, he tells you he simply is incapable of seeing Ciri as she's beyond his gaze. so he lacks being "Omniscient", a trait most truly godly figures tend to possess. it's pretty clear he can't see her because of her Elder blood, which actually came from a pretty live and mortal being, the elf sorceress Lara Dorren. the very fact o' Dim is incapable of meddling with the powers controlling Time and Space makes me believe that while not actually a god or THE god, is a pretty much all-knowing fellow. the trait that makes him most remarkable though is neither his lusting after human souls nor the fact that he takes advantage of people simly by using the basic laws of market and their own vanity against them. it's the fact that he'll always remain a source of speculation. is he the devil? is he the devil's tax collector? is he simply a really powerful being who likes having fun by destroying others? no one can know. when the choice is given to us as players to make Geralt ask him who he truly is, I actually made the same question to myself before pressing the button. "do I really want to know what the hell he is?" and him denying to tell was actually the most satisfying answer I could get. it's pretty nice not having a specific shape or form of someone in your head, instead having to make your own assumptions.

pretty sure the reason why he couldn't see ciri was because of the isle of mists. remember not even the wild hunt could detect her there, due to the nature of the isle. it's why she was hiding there in the first place. or maybe because her soul was hidden, remember the light orb. so it's not like he's not actually omniscient, it's just that even his abilities can be limited in certain cases. a good proof is how geralt managed to beat him in the end, he's immortal but not invincible, he has certain limits in certain cases, just like the devil

I interpret it by meaning he can't interfere with ciri destiny. rather that something blocking ciri from his view at that moment, 'there are certain things even i can't meddle with' he also said 'hidden from my gaze' but i don't think it means the isle of mist, so if ciri came out of there, gaunter can help her? i think he cannot mess with it no matter what happens. sounded a bit like he has no 'permission' to. geralt is much weaker than him so why could geralt go to the isle and after that defeat the wild hunt later? he did gives hint of how to get the best ending. so he knows what is going to happen, and that is after the isle of mist part. i was under the impression that the destiny of ciri, prophecy of the world, was too 'important' or 'special' to be interfered by outside powers. not that the white frost, or ciri elder blood, or isle of mist was too powerful. i used this as an example, if he is the devil, then the destiny of ciri was determined by 'god', and 'god' decide that it should be played out by only involving the people that is part of it, geralt, ciri, wild hunt, other npcs, not because of who is more powerful than who, but it just the way it is. so he forbid such extraordinarily outside powers to directly interfere with it. i don't think there is a 'god' but i use it as a example of something more powerful and outside of gaunter influence that is involved in ciri destiny and life. or simply, provide a reason why such a powerful character such as him not being able to help the player to beat the main quest. it is just a dlc to a game, and they do not want it to have anything to do with the main quest or mess with it any way. but such a powerful character could certainly do it easily, and geralt would ask him for help as he did. so they must have a reason for gaunter not being able to help geralt directly. also, it can also be a chance to let us to that he is not omnipotent, through a detail like that.

CD Project Red said they are creating a new game set in the witcher world, yet not a witcher game. I hope it will have Master Mirror as the main Antagonist

I came up with a fun idea for a new witcher game. A witcher from a lost school frozen in Ice for years is awakened by O'dim to help him out with a little task and puts 3 marks on his body to mark 3 tasks he must complete. All of this is to prepare for another conjunction of Spheres and a rival entity of his that plans to take advantage of it. Our new witcher is given 10 years to complete their task else lose their soul to the man of Glass.

Came as a shock to me when I heard his name. I'd been using the Gaunter O'dimm: Darkness cards throughout the game. Thought it was some sort of foglet like creature. He's easily one of my favorite characters now.

Now this scene made me decide for sure that I consider HoS as one of the 5 best written things in gaming ever for sure. You don't need huge monster or flashy effects to make things absolutely terrifying. Jus talking. Every word, every gesture, every inflection in voice acting - like voice actor really got it across - the sheer terror of the man in every word. And in the end O Dimm presumably kills him in way that is just so normal and ambivalent that you are not sure and that makes it all the more scarry. It works through subtlety and details. Any writer can think of "really disgusting rorring zombie in your face" - to write something like this takes reall skill.
