@@justaquietpeacfuldance did you skip the parts of the books that had Ciri as the protagonist, facing challenges and pressures that come with growing into a young woman, as well as her heritage? The story was never JUST about masculinity. I agree that the themes you mentioned are very important, but they are not the ONLY important themes, and having a male protagonist is not the only way to convey them either. There are stories of manhood to be told through other characters. There is understanding to be gained through seeing a woman step into a male role and experience hardships usually reserved for men. And there is opportunity to demystify women to a male audience by having a well-written, human female lead. Of course, all of that depends on actually having good writing. I understand having concerns, given how many badly-written Strong Female Leads(TM) there are in media in general, but I think CDPR's record when it comes to writing varrants at least a "let's wait and see".

This! Kind of like the Ciri intro in Witcher 3. I could even deal with a female Witcher if they introduced the Cat or Manticore schools, it would be (barely but still relevant to) canon. I think it'd be kind of cool to know the background of the custom Witcher. What I absolutely do NOT want is a character that's canonically a demigod in her own right, fluffing around struggling to kill the most basic of monsters AFTER her in game and on-screen (because I'm sure this is a continuation of the SERIES not just the games) god tier power-up. I think it would have been awesome if we could have chosen our Witcher kiddo from a small selection of pre-made kids, watched them grow through a tutorial montage, and then done an adult appearance tweak when the game cuts to the player character as an adult getting ready for some kind of mission or function. Don't get me wrong, I love Ciri, but I'd have preferred ANYTHING to this advertised game concept 😩

I agree with most of your points, also, my Geralt is retired and my Ciri is Empress (where she could do more good and save more lives in a day than in a whole life as a witcher, btw). I didn't want to play as either of them. Originally, The Witcher 1 was supposed to feature a custom Witcher instead of Geralt, which made sense given the plot of the books. Eventually, this idea was abandoned, and Geralt was brought to life, which turned out to be a good decision. However, now that the Geralt trilogy has concluded, I was hoping for a return of the original idea. Unfortunately, CD Projekt failed to meet my expectations.

She's an interesting side character, and that's it. Making Ciri into a forced 'true' Witcher, when she is quite a unique character, is plainly stupid. We don't have to agree. A custom Witcher could be chosen from different Witcher schools, each offering a unique intro (similar to Dragon Age Origins) and creating opportunities for diverse builds without having an overly overpowered character like Ciri. I prefer more role-playing options, as a new character would essentially be a blank slate, unlike a pre-existing character, whom I cannot mold to my will as freely as someone entirely new.

The problem with Mary Sues is not that they are powerful, it is simply that they behave like jerks (remember Ray slapping Finn's hand because he wanted to be gentlemanly?), *that's* the problem, not that they are powerful. There are plenty of male "Garry Stews" in the market like basically all Assassins in the Assassin's Creed series, Batman in the Arkham series, any first person shooter character, all of which are extremely powerful characters, adept on all forms of martial arts and weapons and able to drive all types of vehicles that are at the same time highly beloved characters, but why is that? The reason is because all of these characters have redeemable qualities that make them likeable and at times even relatable. See James Bond, for example. Bond originally was a character that would make a lot of remarks that would be considered misogynistic by today's standards and at times he would slap women around and stuff like that. Those elements deprived the character from reaching his full potential for longevity so they were wisely faded out as the years went by. At the core he is still a Garry Stew that handles all weapons, vehicles and is able to perform death defying feats every two seconds, but now he is a Garry Stew with a relatable character arc and who treats people (and women, in particular) better than he used to without slapping them and saying cruel remarks. So in the end, the problem with Mary Sues is not that they are powerful, and Ciri's problem is not going to be that she is overpowered (Ezio, Alex Mercer, Jin Sakai all of these were overpowered, to be truthful), her problems will come if she starts patronizing men, hating Geralt for principles and stuff like that. If she behaves like a decent person and treats others with respect, then let her kick all the monster asses that she wants.

ya know, i really didn't expect to agree with this video, but i listened to your points and it really sounds like your right, this is the natural progression, i mean i don't like the whole girl boss woke agenda thing, but in this space we often mention we don't mind it if it makes sense given the lore and the story from the previous game, she's not given her girl boss status by mystical reasons outside of the elder blood, everything else she gains through her trials and effort of her own, maybe she went through the trial of the grasses and survived simply because of the elder blood deal she was born with and maybe she had a reason to become stronger, maybe there is a story behind that desire to become stronger in the story that makes sense. but all the really skilled ppl leaving the studio and the possible effect of this might make or break the game, because this studio cares more about diversity than they do about quality in their games, so i admit i'm a little biased.

The only thing Ciri gains from the Trial of the Grasses is the ability to imbibe witcher potions, which is so useless for her that the choice to make her a witcher is nonsensical.. She can already use witcher signs and has the potential to learn much more advanced magic. She is a very capable swordswoman and has extensive knowledge of oil, brews and monsters (thanks uncle Vesemir) She has the potential to control space and time She defeated a werewolf and a basilisk in W3 using a steel sword and oil (in the case of the werewolf), which is nothing to sneeze at, many witchers in the lore fell to monsters far less dangerous.

My head canon for Witcher 4: Letho the only witcher which wanted to bring back creation of new witchers manages to rebuild the School of the Viper and they start trainning young witchers again, (if you want you can retcon that they managed to even create female witchers, by changing the formula for the trial of the grasses, this way you can have both genders), so you create your own witcher but not a full blown veteran witcher like Geralt, instead you create a young ´just graduated´ witcher which is obviously weaker and inexperienced than a normal witcher. you start going and doing missions and such but suddenly the conjunction of the spheres who was prophesied to happen again, happens!, but your character ends up beign teleported to the realm of the monsters or the place where vampires come from, and you start your quest for survival in a foreign universe with new types of creatures, etc here your quest is to find a way back but you end up going to different dimensions using some artifact or something, so you find other humanoid cultures and do quests for them in order to survive and manage to find a way to come back, the world of the elfs from the wild hunt, the world of the vampires, etc, this could turn into several games btw, so eventually you manage to come back to earth and is absolute chaos with monsters everywhere and you returning as a witcher is a godsent, so the story takes whatever route you want from here.

This was exactly my gripe. Before the trailer there were 3 reasons why I wanted a new male witcher protagonist and not Ciri 1. Ciri was EXTREMELY OP 2. Her story like Geralt felt like it was concluded and I liked the Empress ending more because it was bittersweet( and it was HER actual choice if you let her process her father and the sorceresses without interfering) 3. I wanted to play as a WITCHER because that is implied by the Witcher series CDPR has seemingly solved 2 of these issues in the most contrived way possible. I'll hold out full judgement till I see more, but with the info we have now and current(western) development climate I'm VERY tired and warry.

I think the problem goes further than some basic 'don't want to play as woman' or even 'girlboss.' It has been well established that the studio has lost a lot of talent, it was also well reported that cyberpunk was rushed out earlier than it should have (albeit well after its estimated release date) because the studio was running out of money. Off the back of the problems with cyberpunk the studio sought investment and in order to do so it was required to have a DEI stratagem. From that point onwards everyone put CDProject under a microscope. This trailer merely confirms a lot of the fears. There is evidently still a lot of the Witcher DNA here, this video closely mimics one of the quests from the Witcher 3, and tonally it matches the "hunting monsters" trailer on the lead up to the Witcher 3 release. And a lot of people actually wanted more Ciri content off the back of the last game albeit she was OP even in that game. The real issue here is the willingness of the studio to just throw the lore of the Witcher universe away, as was stated in this video, her becoming a full blooded witcher didn't even make any sense. In the books the Geralt saga had already been wrapped up as an Arthurian legend, however the game didn't contradict what was written and even had the feel and atmosphere of the books, which is why it works so well. But when the developer is happy to just throw that away we are heading for another one of those rings of power moments. Ciri's appearance doesn't help with the current trend of what is happening to the culture, would anyone have been surprised at all if they had quickly flashed up a status screen that included pronouns?

As someone who has been probably watching all kind videos & baords about this, the majority of people indeed wanna play as Geralt again, even though it has been very clear since day 0 that W3 is the finale saga for Geralt. There are 2 massive reasons about this: 1. Most players only played W3 & that's a big problem. It's simply not enough to quell the curiosity fo Geralt characterization.\ 2. Both the OG books, comics & games are all feature Geralt as "The Witcher". We have zero story (non that I know of) that featured other witchers, even some witchers that has been created by CDPR can only have brief summary story about them in Gwent. This means without a doubt the face of The Witcher has always been Geralt of Rivia. But then again, I am gonna play devil's advocate to some of the things you say in this video: Personally, I do made two choices for the new protag. For a SEQUEL, it's either new character (creator too) or Ciri. This can only make sense because Ciri is indeed the most natural progression & I would argue if any character deserved such "passing the torch" treatment, it is indeed Ciri. Not only because she is practically also MC of the books, she is literally Geralt's surrogate daughter & the Witcheress ending has been canon for a long time from CDPR comics. Even if she is not the main protag of the next game, I am 90% sure she is witcheress. It's also what she wanted since she was a girl. Your definition of Mary Sue is not quite correct imo. By this logic, OP power character like Superman is Gary Sue. Based on oxford dictionary, Mary Sue is a type of idealized female character, typically a young woman, unrealistically lacking in flaws or weaknesses. This means even OP character don't always mean Mary/Gary Sue. For the start, yes, Ciri is very powerful & now also full witcher (apparently so), but she still have flaws & weakness that has been established in her previous characterization. We know nothing about this game story yet. Also, from trailer alone, this doesn't fit Mary Sue story as things simply don't go the way Ciri wanted. Even after she saved the day by slaying the relic monster, the sacrificed girl still being killed by the fearful mob. Every actions still have consequences & hopefully the game actually stand by this, just like previous Witcher games. In the end, people are way too quick to judge simply because of the political climate & game industry trend that clear ruined many female characters. It is understandable to have such strong disagreeable reactions, but we need to judge this thing much more carefully, otherwise we are no better than the woke crowds who ruined many franchises simply because of their ego & ideologies.

In your last video, you mentioned something about a female sorcerer character, I think what would be awesome if they went the divinity original sin route or similar to mass effect, you have a commander Shepard like character that can be either male or female, if you choose male you're a Witcher, and you have a companion (maybe a sister) who is the sorcerer you can switch between them for game play but your male is the face of the pair, or if you pick the female you're the sorcerer with the Witcher character as your supporting companion. This feels more lore compliant and you get to essentially play a sorcerer and a witcher.

Going through the trial of the grasses for Ciri makes no sense. Not only is the fatality rate unacceptably high, hence why it's essentially forced on young boys who don't have much choice, but none of the abilities are comparable to her natural Elder Blood, so the cost/benefit risk assessment makes no sense for her.

Ciri has prior connections to the School of the Cat through the lore of the game (she took their pendant from the body of Leo Bonhart after killing him), and they are the only school that trained female witchers. It's really not a stretch for her to become a witcher.

I don't think that what they wrote in that article means necessarily that Ciri still has the Elder Blood powers. Those powers were always something *more* that made her special. She could have lost her Elder Blood powers but still have an affinity for magic. So that, instead of being the most powerful sorceress in the world, she could just be a very capable one, albeit just one among many this time. Gameplay-wise this only means that we will have more skills to choose from, and I'm here for it.

That's pretty much what I got from it too. It reads more like options to maximize game play like you can lean into developing Ciri to be more of a Witcher or more of a sorceress. OP and Mary Sue are not the same thing. The difference between the two is very crucially the writing and how their power is handled. There have been excellent stories about OP characters, some of them earned their powers but some didn’t, and the writing is what turns the story of an OP character to a good one, vs bad writing which just gives you a flat, boring Mary Sue. I understand the concerns, I share them, but I think a lot of people are too quick to dismiss. We don’t know anything about the story, no more than we did from the Witcher 3 trailers. CDPR have talented writers, they can still make something good out of it. Whether or not they will remain to be seen, but i intend to at least allow them to *try* before I go ‘full internet’ on them.

It's more about the story, and the story is really important in building a video game where a character has to grow and develop their abilities over time. CDPR have given us some quality stories in the past so I have confidence giving them the benefit of the doubt until they actually give me reason not to.

Then add the fact that CDPR has been following and implementing ESG and DEI initiatives pretty hard which has hammered most all games they have been forced into and it makes you weary for what they made. It’s not impossible. No girl has survived yet, that’s all. Ciri is a child of destiny, she’s got elder blood, and Geralt had prepared her body with necessary ingredients and training to undergo the Trial of the Grasses when she was a child. Or the sorceresses could’ve discovered a safer way to undergo the mutations. We will find out how all this stuff happens in the game, we don’t really know anything yet except that she successfully became a real Witcher. 🤷‍♂️

I like your take. I argue that what was presented was not a Mary Sue. There are several cues in the trailer that tell us she is not perfect, she is not demigod-like powerful - and she is not all that in control (of herself). 1. She enters the lair and gets beat about until she guzzles the Witcher potion. She can't fight on equal terms until she does so. That she even needs to enter the lair is telling that she's not the teenaged demigod she once was. 2. She fails, as Geralt did an obscene amount of times, to anticipate the consequences of meddling in peasant mythology. He understood it, but he still did it. No doubt Ciri romanticized Witchers as noble monster slayers. But she's learned nothing from experience. 3. "There are only monsters." My take was that she slaughters the peasants here as the reveal logo rolls, like a monster. Or does she? Ciri is self-made. Ciri didn't get to make the choice to be the Daughter of the Gull or Calanthe's granddaughter, or Emhyr's daughter - but she does choose to be a Witcher. Geralt didn't choose to be a Witcher but did choose to stay out of politics. 4. Ciri is also a monster. Look at that head roll after the decapitation. She enjoys this. And even if she is a Mary Sue, the outcome in the trailer proves she can't solve the fundamental problem with us humans, that we choose to believe in things without evidence.

They have the power to open and close the gates between worlds. There could have been also a trade off - Ciri stopping the White Frost while exhausting her Elder Blood abilities - the same way she lost the Power after healing Ihuarraquax / Little Horse in the books.

One of the best elements of the Witcher series for me was the whole "Targeted outsider surviving on your ability to play on the hated- but-needed dynamic". I also think, whether it was stated in the books or games, that adults do not and cannot survive the Trial of the Grasses. They are only done on young boys. Young girls do not survive them. How did Ciri survive it? It is also antithetical to anything Geralt and the rest of the witchers wanted for her; in both the books and games. No one wanted her to be a witcher. (Only in the show, Vesemir did. But even then they said it's too dangerous for her.) It breaks lore and it breaks characterization.

W4 protagonist should be Eskel he's alive in all W3 endings also Geralt & Yen would NEVER let Ciri do the trial or fight monsters without OP elder blood powers. The Ciri "Witcher" ending ONLY is logical bc Ciri had mastered space time pwrs she's WAY more powerful than Geralt & freaking defeated the White Frost 😳 that's the ONLY way you let ur daughter hunt monsters & even then its a pretty illogical ending for Geralt & Yen.

Although i agree with you about the girl boss trend..(im super over it) I do not quite see it yet with ciri though there is unfortunatly a very high likley hood of it happening..😒 I am of a wait and see mind set, im neither hyped or dissapointed we know to little. As for why Ciri would want to be a witcher over a sorc i always thought that was her preference because the way i alway interprited her character was that she always wanted to be like her father figure Geralt and follow in his footsteps, she always came across as not careing for power and magic like every other scorceress.. i dunno im probably huffing the copeum too hard 😂
