Little bit late, but Geralt originally let a werewolf live, I think he was able to transform at will, later found a werewolf wife and they had children who are born as werewolves as well. The wife and children actually attacked Geralt because they thought Geralt was there to kill them, before being stopped by the husband. He later helped Geralt find a secret entrance and actually killed a human for the first time to save Geralt

I was really obsessed with werewolves as a kid and I remember reading about a lot of mythology surrounding cursed werewolves: some could be cursed just for sleeping outside on a Wednesday or urinating outside (pretty severe in my opinion), sometimes wearing a Wolfskin belt could give one the power to transform, some could wear wolves hide - There's a rather sad story of a wolf coming to a doctor begging for his help saving his wife and it turns out both are humans who can transform-- In some cases the humans sound like they have a bit of control over their power as they only transform after they bury their clothing and can only turn back when they return for it. (of course mythology has some idiot who sees this and decides 'hey why not try to mug this werewolves clothes because yolo'))

If you're on PC there's a mod that adds random encounters, adds a lot of depth and gives you experience for killing monsters in future contracts! Just try not to run in to a basilisk that's 20 levels higher than you.

I always like the character tropes that use curses or evil origins for good. To me, the best werewolf trope is the one that embraces the change but finds a way to aim it like Bruce suggested in Incredible Hulk. There’s so much rage (due to the pain of the transformation and hunger for nutrients to heal) that it can cloud your judgement. So you simply throw yourself at the bad people.

If I remember correctly, when you talk with the hunter in White Orchard (the one that lead you to the corpses of the soldiers killed by the griffin) Geralt, since the hunter mentioned that he was suffering from a certain condition, believed it was lycanthropy and explained that the curse could be lift. So, I know that with the one of "Wild Heart" he said differently, but maybe there could be a way.

Sometimes I feel like the mutations given to a Witcher are PARTIALLY a watered-down version of the advantages of a werewolf except without actually becoming a werewolf hence why Witchers still look human even though, as Geralt says, "I'm not human." With sideeffects of course like being sterile.

I think both theories could be true. They could be magical / cursed creatures - but the actual disease is genetic in nature. The mages or magic users creating the curse might be using magic that is based on changing a person's genes. It's definitely a possibility in my opinion. In lore, people tend to see werewolves as 'cursed' because they are capable of hurting people they love. Also, they just have a hard life in many ways. So a figurative curse became a literal one when mages got the idea to inflict this condition on people. It would be like in modern days when we have a disease caused by genetics such as MS and a doctor decides to give someone he hates gene therapy to make that person acquire MS. I hope that makes sense. Obviously it's a hard comparison to make, but I think the general concept is legitimate. Lycanthropy existed before mages, and people knew about it, and considered the affected to be 'cursed' to have to live with such a condition, as we might consider people born with MS to be unlucky. Mages then took that literally, and decided making someone a werewolf would be a pretty good way to curse them. If they're adults, they probably wouldn't have learned how to control their condition right away, thus likely to act like a typical Witcher werewolf that kills their friends/family the first time they transform.

I think you are misinterpreting what "Cursed ones" signifies. Lycanthrope is a curse, weather gained from genetics or by other means, it is still a curse, if you choose to see it as a gift still does not change the fact that you are cursed. I know that in normal cases, cursed would be towards something that was considered annoying/bad, so if you wanted this, it wouldn't technically be a curse. But I think Witcher 3 bases its werewolves of the European lore, and I believe the origin of werewolves lore is that it was a curse on a king, because he fed human flesh to a god to insult him, so he cursed the king so that he wouldn't be able to use his silverware anymore, and be forced to transform at a full moon to eat human flesh including his family. I may have missed out some information or mixed things up slightly but that's the gist of it. A werewolf to most would be considered a curse and even if not, it would have been first given as a curse.

Moon dust is actually used for things like ghouls, to keep them from transforming, dimeritium is what you use to negate magical abilities. But dont take that the wrong way, i love you videos man.

@@WitcherGeorge tested, it just negates transformation in certain creatures, dimeritium bombs are pretty much only useful for Elementals and the stand at Kaer Morhen lol for portals, i even tried using it on that Oferi Mage that takes you after killing the toad prince. Doesnt work. Guess it only works on lesser magic, like Witcher signs. But yea Moon Dust is the only.thing that stops werewolves from regenerating.

It's a little confusing, but if we go about the 'werewolf' curse from a purely genetic point of view, perhaps the witcher mutations destroy all the werewolf genes i their bodies, so maybe on certain curses affect them?

I don't think it had anything to do with his genes *semi spoiler* Morkvarg's ex crewmate used a family heirloom on him to curse him , so I kinda doubt his genes were what made it possible otherwise it would only be useful on very few people also how would he of known of Morkvarg's recessive werewolf genes when Morkvarg himself didn't know. You made 3 1/4 of that up right? The Witcher's portayal of various creatures isn't great, but necessary to create a great story driven rpg 1st thing to get straight. Lycanthropy became the name given to the disease carried by lycanthropes, which became classified as a person cursed to change into a hunger-blinded beast of various types, regardless how the curse was bestowed and the reasons beneficial or not it is a curse. 2nd the only differentiations between the types of lycanthrope are the animal types and when their changes happen, the bears come from the idea of skandanavian bersarks or berserkers who take narcotics to trigger it, but the werewolf is an anglosaxon invention and was meant as a form of punishment, a curse that changes them upon the 1st full moon then every night after. And 3rd hunger blinded does mean completely driven by the primal instict, this and when they're in their beast form is where The Witcher has compromised to make the game playable Mixing mythos is always a bad idea if people are convinced it's based on something it's not, writers and designers are to blame for this kind of confusion. But it does make a great game
