What are Hyms in the Witcher? In this video I try my best to explain the history of the Hyms. I will go over the hym in skellige and the hym with jarl udalryk in the witcher 3 wild hunt! Be sure to like the video for more of the same and subscribe if you're new or just love the witcher!

A quick disclaimer - A lot of these videos use information from the witcher wiki, in some cases I do read directly from the pages, I do always make sure to include my own thoughts and other information I know myself, but I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page here. Even though I use information from the wiki, I do still create the videos, with time, effort and a lot of editing! The idea behind the lore videos is to present the information to you guys in a fun and more interesting way then you guys having to get the information from pages and read it yourself. If anyone isn't okay with this I apologise, but since day one I have always said where I get the information from. Thank you for reading.

Hyms, one of the most intriguing monsters if you ask me. And one of the few that give me the creeps. What's so cool about them is that they preety much kill you with their power over your mind. Hyms are basicaly if depression became a monster.

I always thought of hyms as an allegory for severe manic depression...the dark thoughts, the self-harm, the takeover of the victim's actions and personality, the victim's feeling that they deseve pain and suffering, etc. I'm pretty sure that in the olden times, before modern medicie and psychology, this was actually what people imagined was happening to someone, who had severe depression...something similar to hyms in the witcher universe.

I think hyms supposed to be the interpretation of human depressions & regrets that eating away their souls. Take it to "medieval time" & medieval people told it like some kind of demons/supernatural beings that corrupt depressed & guilty people. Basically like a case of "wet dream" & medieval people calling it "Succubus" attack. It's honestly really brilliant the way CDPR implemented IRL folklore & construct a genuine great lore out of it.

It might be possible that since hyms are deeply connected to humanity they might be from whatever world humans originated from in the Witcher. Technically, theres another one in the world Gaunter O'Dimm creates at the end of hearts of stone. Interestingly, it appears to be the only enemy in there that is an actual monster, while the other enemies appear to be nothing but shadowy recreations. I dont know if that is actually the case, but if it is, it would possibly unveil something about their origins. Maybe Hyms are of similair origin as O'Dimm or are in some other tied to him, as they are described as demons.

Back in the day, no one would call a chort by it's full name. Said to bring misfortune, that's what. Just called it "He" or "Him". everybody knew what you were talking about. Or rather... who. Yeah, Chort and Hyms are related in folklore.

Considering the age in which game is set, how the hell did Cerys created a fake baby, that was convincing enough even for a Witcher like Geralt.

I sure you fight Hym's in Gaunter O dimms world, maybe with Gaunter being a demon/satan and the Hyms also a type of demon, they come from the same realm. Interesting but awful place if it's real.

It would be a cool story if someone got themselves "infected" with a hym on purpose and just wanted it to be there and watch them commit atrocities and crime. Would it stay on them, would it devour them like normal? Or would it just let them do what they want aslong as it's evil
@elainejel790

Yeah, would be cool to watch it! But shouldn't Hym starve almost to death as it needs remorse as nutrition? If no remorse, then no motivation to pick this person

A very disturbing and horrible demon, the dark voice in your head, a possible inspiration for the Hym is scandinavian and other folklore of a nightmare creature. From sweden the mara, as in nightmare, sit on you every night and haunt your dreams, and in english folklore the night hage, maybe also the dibbuk, a ghost or demon like creature that posses you and forces you to do its bidding.
@wtfronsson
@wtfronsson 5 жыл бұрын
Funny you would call it "living embodiment of a nightmare", since the "night mare" is actually the name of a real life (folk myth) monster, that might be related to the Hym story. The Nightmare creature has quite a rich history, known pretty much globally as an evil spirit that torments sleeping people. Europeans called it with names like Mare, Mara, Moroi, among other things. And Nightmare was later solidified as the English name for the being. Practically every culture has their own legend for this creature. The exact descriptions vary between cultures, of course. But the combining factor is that the monster interacts only with people who've fallen asleep, it can't be held away by any physical barriers, and only the victim can see it. Later on we've mostly forgotten the legend of the creature itself, but still kept the word for the phenomena of bad dreams and sleep paralysis. The same has been done in many languages in fact, which is also interesting. Estonia and Finland for example called their creature a Presser, because of the sensation of something pressing on your chest. And now their languages officially call bad dreams "Pressers", and a vast majority of people don't know the etymology. Just like people don't know what Nightmare really means, either. Interesting, huh? Anyway, the Hym and the Nightmare are pretty different, while having some similarities. Maybe they are distant cousins. Or maybe the Hym is what we see when the Mare manages to escape the dream realm :)

They're real. Had one n knew its name as THE HIM. But the whole time it was a HYM. Rs shit sucked, I figured out to use it energy from sadness n rage to laughing and get high (weed type high) off its energy. It's still here but it's weak. It bothers people that get close tho. But it's real.
