I think what made Radovid so ruthless is not madness, but paranoia. Scarred by Philipa, he protects himself by controlling those around him, and destroying those he can't control. As the saying goes, you can make a throne out of bayonets, but you can't sit on it. He chased himself into a corner: the only way he can survive is by being more ruthless, which means more people wanting him dead. He's certainly smart enough to realise this loop, but at this point there's no way back.

Yeah he's a rather pitiable character. More than Intelligent enough to see the flaws and failure in what he's doing, but too hurt and afraid to change course. I think that's ultimately why I choose to kill him (alongside saving thaler and roche) because no one should have to live like that. The regret and self loathing as you age would eat you alive. @STPstudio47 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say Radovid is crazy. He seems crazy at first, but there's more to it: 1. He was raised by both Philippa and Dijkstra, two power-hungry people who thought they can use him as their puppet, but Radovid was not a type of guy who just submits, as soon as he had the opportunity he wanted to take what was his and move aside those two. So after all this time he's been denied his father's legacy, its understandable he wants solidify his position. 2. Witch hunts have two main reasons: first one is the trauma philippa gave him, and the second one are the events from the witcher 2, mages conspiracies, lodge wanted the full control of the north, kept manipulating kings, so in the end after all those events the public opinion on mages became really really bad, therefore in order to have people of the north on his side, Radovid started the hunts. Besides, Radovid knew he couldn't take Novigrad by force, so he used similar politics to those in town and eternal fire church in order to appeal to them, make novigrad join redania, not by force. (Btw official gwent expanded lore gave us info that if Radovid wins the war, after few years all the witch hunts end so it was more of a circumstantial political move) 3. His famous chess speech that is considered a crazy talk, it's not. Radovid is testing geralt there. If players responses that he understands what Radovid means, he's furious that geralt is humoring him. And if geralt admits he doesn't get it, Radovid drops all the weird metaphors and explains his point. 4. He is a tactical genius (sadly the third game mostly talks about it and doesn't show it). In witcher 2 no matter the ending, he always gains something (either a pact with kaedwen, control over the lodge or becomes the king of temeria). In witcher 3 he's able to unify the entire north, which was in total chaos, against nilfgaard and actually can win this war. My second favorite king in the witcher universe, after Foltest :D

I always assume 3rd takes place a year or so after the 2nd game, and years can change people I always choose anyone other than him because no matter how evil Nilfgardians or Dijkstra are, they at least know how to deal with treacherous sorceresses without killing every wizard available(Raddy witch hunts every magician because one blind tart with spanking fetish turned him into a newt). Lastly, look at the people leaders are surrounded by. Emhyr may be surrounded by snakes, but at least those snakes can be nice when it suits them and he doesnt backstab anyone for any reason, Dijkstra has connections with Crime lords, who also can be friendly when they have reason. Radovid on the other hand is surrounded by arseholes, who dont take kindly to anything and are harmful towards Geralt's friends(Menge makes Spanish Inquisition look expected, and Whoreson junior, though temporarily, but still! This fuck is makes Wild Bill Wharton look like Andy Dufrense) In short, Radovid the Stern is more of a ruler who feels every inch of Damocles' sword above him and is usually surrounded by worst people.

In Poland we made a Witcher movie called "The hexer" (that’s how wiedźmin was first translated into english) in 2001. It wasn't that succesfull because of it's poor budget and that it adapted only some parts of the wither stories from the first 2 books. However one year later in 2002 a tv show was released that was essentialy a better version of the movie. It has 13 episodes and fully adapts first two books. It does it really well and has a very slavic atmosphere and music. Unfortunately special effents aren't that good and movie writer added a lot of weird unimportant things such as changing Geralt backstory and adding some weird side plot. So if someone is intrested in witcher content then tye series is worth checking because the movie is just cut scenes mashed together to make a movie. My recomndation is to skip episode 2 with Geralt training at Kaer Morhen because it's very weird and not true to games and books at all. He could've done to the MA like what Salarians did in the Mass Effect series; minimalize their ability to grow into a force that can challenge him but still allow them to be in his kingdom. Course any ME fan will probably read that while tired and think I'm endorsing sterilization when I'm just meaning keep their numbers low but keep the few happy with him. Happy friends of yours can sometimes also rat out their other 'friends' they may not like as much which frankly leads to Radovid being able to deal with Philipa on his own and in a more controlled manner instead of Geralt.

I think Olgeard turned Iris's father into the caretaker. Her father was last seen when he dissolved their marriage. And he believed that Iris was way out of Olgeard's league. In revenge I could see Olgeard trapping her father's soul in that body to forever act as a servant and prove his power once and for all. That would explain the Caretaker's instinct to protect her and her not being able to bring herself to even look at him

Streets of Novigrad were still exactly the same dumps as they were before, hell there isnt anything new since his conquest. If i remember correctly, turning Ciri into Empress would make Nilfgardians far less evil than their predecessors, or in this case their future vassals. There isnt a single sign in the game that Nilfgardians are worse than the northeners themselves (If you want example of evil faction that was somewhat done right, Caesar's Legion in Fallout: New Vegas)

Radovid wasn't all that crazy really. Especially since if he wins things turn out pretty okay for the Northern Realms. It seems to all just be from stress as when he defeats all of his enemies he goes back to normal. And of course the Witch Hunts started in Witcher 2 and was completely justified and some time before he started acting insane.

I was puzzled and disappointed that CDPR made Radovid crazy in the 3rd game; it came out of left-field in my opinion. The Lodge of Sorceresses were pretty much the main villains of Witcher 2- they were doing some deep state conspiracy to control all the kingdoms; I don't have a problem with Radovid popping off against them. But playing the "Radovid is a bigot/discriminatory against all magic users" card was a bit much. It gave Triss a storyline, but felt dumb and cliche (the magic users in Novigrad couldn't just teleport out of the city lol?) I think CDPR should have made Radovid a) NOT crazy and b) more nuanced. Same with the Witch Hunter faction and Church: I guess all religious folk are evil hypocrites huh?" c) WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO KILL PHILLIPA. SHE CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT. I feel like the Order of the Flaming Rose got shafted as well, but then again so did Henselt, Iorveth, etc. Practical limitations of somehow tying up loose ends between games.

In my opinion, this evil twin of Prince William is the most evil of the 3 major leaders(Emhyr can be forgiving when you do a good job. Dijkstra is the friendliest of them all. At least Radovid is an honest jerk(In that he doesnt hide behind some mask of friendly man, or pretend hes some paragon of morality, he admits his jerkassery)), though what would you do if some evil lady with big tracts of land lady turned you into a newt?
@Grenn945 ай бұрын
I really don't like how they did Radovid in the witcher 3. Throughout Witcher 1 and 2 Radovid and Geralt were pretty cool as far as things go, he was even willing to believe that Geralt didn't kill Foltest from the start with little to no proof and I genuinely believe would have let Geralt go free if he remained in the dungeon though the Loc Muinne summit. He hates mages and the lodge sure, but he's done nothing but win since TW1 so him going mad and making him as evil as possible just seems stupid. What drove him mad? He literally united the entire northern kingdoms under his banner basically by himself by using the chaos Letho caused to his advantage, personally ordered and watched his worst enemy's eye's be cut out of her head, he checkmated the lodge and ruined their plans, and he kept Nilfgaard from taking the north in a clean sweep. If anything pride should have been his downfall not madness. I think CDPR had him go full Daenerys Targaryen just so players would be more willing to see Emhyr and Nilfgaard as the lesser of two evils.

Lodge may have been ruled by the most evil of the bunch, but 1. Triss, Margitta, that elven lady, or that lady with Turban on her head, arent evil, in fact the opposite(Yes, Triss did something bad in past, but its a long time since then and everyone is forgiving towards her. And no "She manipulating Geralt" doesnt count for other reasons) 2. The normal mages who have done nothing wrong(Along with Alchemists and other weirdos) were the first to get the worst of Raddy's wrath(Phil may have been blinded(She found out what community draws in their spare time), but that didnt broke her spirit) 3. Why was Phillipa such a bitch towards him?(I mean Raddy doesnt explain what Exactly she did to him) 4. Also How can you say mages are evil, when Raddy supported Satan's bitch of the year(Junior) and Caleb von Dickishness(Even worse junior). 5. I will not follow Flaccid cocksucker, who has problems with Hogwarts because one bitch turned him into a newt I admit three things: 1. He created Witch hunters i like to kill 2. He seems to be competent enough to victory(Though we dont see his geniusness) 3. Hes very relatable tyrant, though i still think hes far too iredeemable

I always thought he and Emhyr's arcs were synonymous with Stalinist vs Napoleonic rule. Radovid was a young man, from the relative political wilderness, who rose to the top through cruelty, scheming, ruthlessness and overwhelming the opposition with large armies. He was also murdered from within. Ehmyr essentially came from nothing, took advantage his peoples; disarray and discontentment with decadent rule, then expanded his kingdom into an all-conquering personality cult that could never last 🤣.

quite honestly, there is so many irl people who made their brand by spewing hatred and us versus them rhetoric i don't really think that part of his personality is very unique. he had an understandable hatred for the lodge for trying to grab his political power, but then just turned it into witchhunts and genocides against non-humans which rallied a lot of people behind him, a lot of dictators do it. just giving people anger outlet to blame someone for things like yk, war, famine or high taxes. what sets radovid apart from your regular everyday hateful bigot is that he seemed to be a very competent war commander esp at such a young age, considering that he wins the war with nilfgaard if he's left alive.

Technically, a Nilfgaard under CIri would be the best outcome, with a Roche led regency in Temeria until Princess Anais came of age to ally with a Redanian nobleman. She'd have abolished the slavery Nilfgaard was famous for and just blown up people's heads with and elder blood tantrum if they got out of line.
