What are the witch hunters? In this video I try my best to explain the history of the witch hunters. I will go over prominent members and their history, the witcher hunter's effect on the witcher games, Caleb Menge, Graden, Tamara Strenger, Premethine Shakeslock and many other members! A quick disclaimer - A lot of these videos use information from the witcher wiki, in some cases I do read directly from the pages, I do always make sure to include my own thoughts and other information I know myself, but I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page here. Even though I use information from the wiki, I do still create the videos, with time, effort and a lot of editing! I have to admit, I wish they handled the hunters better. In a game where there's meant to be difficult choices, they are so unambiguously evil that killing them is always the right choice. Instead of having them have reasonable fears of magic and similar things, they just made all of them (except Graden) sadistic bastards.

Even then, that choice isn't too hard. Pick between the people who were willing to put down everything and risk their lives to help you defeat the wild hunt. Or help the guy who betrays them and plans to rule with an iron fist. But I get what you are saying, the game has some great choices, like letting the cat school witcher live or die. I just feel the game could've had some better or morally grey choices.

Not every choice has to be ambiguous. There are some vile witches and mages, human experimentation and the ending of witcher 2 to show why and how slaughter of mages started. But portraying racism and brutality are important too.

Yeah true to that, they handled them as they are real life witch hunters. Yet it would be more real to the world if the Witchhunters had good points and good people on them. There are very evil things in this world and one would think not only sadists go out to protect people from this, with hard methods or not. You can hate the religion, but in a world like witcher they do have a point...yet all were portayed morally evil.

I think it's both. The witch hunters were formed by the eternal fire and they are ruled by Radovid. So when the one witch hunter mentions he's there under Radovid's command it doesn't mean that he was responsible for creating them, just that Radovid, like everything in his realm has ultimate control over them and can order them to do certain things.

I think Radovid created them due to his vendetta against mages and specifically Philippa. He made them and had them act as an accessory to the church to give them an air of legitimacy and to justify their actions even further for the common folk.

Good video. I just wanted to add a couple of things I remember reading/seeing in case they are of interest or not known. -The witcher hunters were killing some non-humans before the mages leave Novigrad. I read somewhere that the mage burned when Geralt arrives is Felicia Cori, a former student of Philippa's who can sell Geralt stuff in W2. The man who dies is a doppler who had been Chappelle of Church of the Eternal Fire for many years and a friend of Dudu and an acquaintance of Geralt in the books. So two people Geralt possibly knew were being killed when he arrived in town. In any case, at least one doppler was killed alongside the mages. -I believe it's Elihal that tells Geralt about Kalkstein's death, saying he went out out in a spectacular fashion with fiery beast in the air that exploded to say "Radovid sucks flaccid cock".

I regret very much the fact that a man like Graden shares a banner with these fanatics. The dude shows the best things Witch Hunters could be, not only in mentality but also conduct. I was kinda hoping that there's a scenario under Djikstra's rule where the Witch Hunters are reformed into a special forces against actual magical threats instead of violent religious prosecutors, and Graden is appointed their leader.

Given that Witchers are practically all but died out, save for a few surviving members (unless other schools still produce Witchers.. just that School of the Wolf and some other major ones are gone), I would say that in a world full of monsters and witches, the Witch hunters could have taken up the mantle as mere human Witchers (as in without the mutations). Naturally they'd work in groups as opposed to single fighters as ONE Witcher could do the job of dozens of humans and with far less of life lost. Sadly they lost their way, or rather had a wrongfully one laid out to them, and targeted harmless beings instead. It's like they never realized that something that can't fight back against ropes and chains is no more dangerous than a normal human. The leader of the Witch Hunters would probably have been smart enough to not target Dopplers and minor beings, but he was under the strict guidance by Menge and the church. I feel like they should have more or less worked WITH Geralt, not against him. Like they did when hunting the Witch sisters. But.. an order that takes in what seems like common criminals and blood thirsty thugs, the fine line of who to target gets greyed out.

Its a human attempt to recreate monster hunting but without the clear definitions on what is a monster and what is not nor an understanding on how to properly detect mages. Graden seems on the right track more of a proper investigator looking for actual foul play rather than a thug in it for the money.

I think it's more like the Witch Hunter guild was founded by the church as an 'independant' to be used between different instances, like Graden's people being specifically from the Redanian chapter. So Nilfgaard has a chapter as well, same as anywhere else that has Witch Hunters attached.

I think your information could have been more certain(I didn´t recognize a fault, just uncertainty) if you had remembered what we find out about the Order of the Flaming Rose in DLC Hearts of Stone. When fighting through their camps searching for diagrams belonging to the Offeiri merchant, Geralt can read notes and in the end also some dialog about rise and fall of the Order including part transformation into the Witch Hunters. Keep it up mate, you are great at this! :)

I read books a long ago but as I remember that in Nilfgaard were "rebelious" mages arrested by inteligence / police, there were no public witch hunts as in north. But I´m not fan of Nilfgaard either, their invasions and expansions described in books are for another discussion.

I remember Radovid at one point saying “my hunters” referring to the witch hunters waiting outside Philippa Eilharts hideout. Plus the fact that Kalkstein shows quite the hate towards Radovid more than Heirarch Hemmelfart and Dijkstra stating that Mages and Sorceresses like Yen and Triss will never be safe while Radovid is alive makes me infer that the games atleast tries to justify that Radovid is the one responsible for the Witch Hunters and their Actions, as for the Temple Guards, That might be technically under Heirarch Hemmelfart and the Novigrad City Council but I’m sure Radovid has a big influence on them.

I usually watch these videos without commenting but this is the first time I want to throw in my two cents. When I played for the first time, I chose Triss over Yen (I now know, an unpopular opinion) because of her work to keep the other mages safe. I didn't know anything about the characters going in but Yen seemed to care only for herself and I was impressed with how willing Triss was to put her life on the line. Geralt deals with enough selfish people only working within their own interests, he didn't need to end up with one of them too.

Witch hunters in the game are 'modeled' to match the description of Chapel's special units within the eternal fire guard in the book 'sword of the destiny' so all you said on the origin of the witch hunter is false. They were a special unit of the eternal fire guard, menge took over chapel for being a doppler, at the same time radovid used the flamming rose order to serve his military ambition, then flamming rose order were crushed by the war and fled and disband, some of flamming rose order came to novigrad to be recruted by this new rising order, the witch hunters; And radovid use them as a fanatic force for a fanatic ruler. source : books, and the stone of heart dlc

I dislike three things about the Witcher story 1. When the thing with Priscilla happened she never came back. Such a cool character too! Woulda love to see some of her banter with dandelion 2. Witch Hunters were plain evil. We already had Whoreson Junior and Radovid to fill in that niche. I wanted more difficult choices like they had in B&W 3. There was no option to try and eradicate Temple Isle. I would have loved to try the organized crime bosses work together and destroy that filthy church for good.

Witch hunters wouldn't be in Nilfgaard and The Order of the Flaming Rose wouldn't be there either Emhyr doesn't share power and the Hierarch having any power in Nilfgaard would be sharing. Plus they do not hunt mages in Nilfgaard Only the Lodge of sorceress would be hunted down but they would be imprisoned. The Order of the Flaming Rose were not witch hunters either, they were the churches army. The witch hunters were created because of the events at Loc Muine and most likely created by both Radovid and the Hierarch.

Nilfgaard is not a tolerant wonderland it has slavery as a core element of its economy and tiered citizenship rights between nobles/commoners and True Nilfgaardians/Everyone else. A positive i can give is that everyone no matter the race or social station can become a slave so people dont tend to question the emperor due to fear of losing everything.

The Order of the Flaming Rose were used as Frontline Troops by Radovid V against Nilfgaard as a way to get rid of them to seize their landholding and wealth. He disbanded them after his failed offensive against Nilfgaard and the survivors either joined the Witch Hunters or ended up as Bandits. The Witch Hunters were Radovids say “SS” as they were a paramilitary group that did co-operate with his regular army.

my second playthrough i killed radovid, but then saved thaler ves and roche by killing dikstra (all spelled wrong im sure) I thought that this would allow nilfgaard to win and hence no church of eternal fire or witch hunters in novigrad, but this is not the case. is the only way to have a peaceful novigrad to let dikstra betray them?

novigrad is peaceful if radovid is killed and dijkstra ais killed? If you mean that the north remains united and not part of nilfgaard, then dijkstra is the only way.

SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T PLAYED YET. So, pretty much when dijkstra asks you to participate in the assassination, agree. Then after finishing all the quest you can for him (rescuing thaler), wait until later in the game (after the battle of kaer morhen late). Then when finding Phillipa eilhart and rescuing her, reason with dijkstra, do not 'push forcefully'. Then by following all the quests dijkstra gives you, from that point, Radovid should die.

I would have liked to had an option to side with these guys in certain side quests etc. Even though it seems illogical and weird I would have enjoyed some psychopathic choices likes handing them certain mages for coin or influence,

Recruiting Elves, Drawves, Qunari, Commoners, Peasants and Nobles alike. You could even choose to side with the Mages or Templar’s and even build a Mage Tower in Skyhold...

Hey Witcher 3 Enthusiasts, I need some help. I enchanted my cat armor with entanglement, it’s supposed to modify my yrden sign into a magic bug zapper essentially. However despite having both the enchantment and magic trap lvl 3 my yrden remains the same boring old magic circle. Can anyone help me with this?
