Thanks for posting this. We don't get too often the views of the Normandy campaign from the point of view of the Germans. Especially, on this scale. Very illuminating.

Joke from German military. An officer is teaching new troops to his area about aircraft identification. He points up and explains "If you see blue, it's RAF. If you see green it's USAAF. If you see nothing, it's Luftwaffe."

An hour humanitarian cease fire so the wounded can be cleared out and tended to. Then an hour later the war restarts to create a whole new batch of dead and wounded. War has some bizarre 'rules' at times.

The incompetent Corporal had bit off more than he could chew. As a military leader he was a failure, having no training in logistics, divisions coordinations, strategic manurers .... and worst, listened to his own glory seekers around him instead of his competent veteran military leaders.

It would not have mattered if Germany could have gotten the oil in the Mideast. They could not have held the land. Germany has a small coastline, and in 1939, had a population of 87M vs US (with all the oil they needed) 148M, United Kingdom 47M, Soviet Union 170M.

The Nazis and Japanese both lost because of the superior industrial production of the allies. In addition, both built a pair of unsurpassed battleships, which proved to be outdated technology.

Bismark and Tirpitz were quite surpassed. Relatively inefficient ships for their fighting power, with single purpose secondary armament, and an armor scheme that wasn't ideal. Also, the 3 drive shaft system meant that, in case of damage to the rudders, the ships would not be able to use the engines to steer as well. A design weakness that helped doom the Bismarck. The Treaty of Versailles meant Germany had lost a lot of ship design/building expertise, and the design of the Bismarck class suffered due to it. She's just famous because it went on a suicide mission, in which she landed a lucky hit on a ship badly in need of refit, before her fate was sealed by a few outdated torpedo bombers.

FM von Kluge would have been smart to surrender the Allies. FM von Rundstedt knew the real score upon the invasion.

It must have been disheartening to have to defend yourself while occupying someone else's property and watch all your comrade's die in the process and meanwhile your air cover to help you was a no show.

I have seldom heard such an absurd account of this battle. As many have observed, who were there. There were, quirk literally, acres within the pocket through which you could not walk without stepping on a German body part. There was no German glory to be had in this battle.

As for Tigers helpless against fighter bombers. That's rubbish. There are statistics which says that the number of tanks hit by fighter bombers was very very small. But! Tanks (i.e. Panzers) don't fight purely on their own. Or rather they can fight on their own but the result will be very disheartening. How it was you may see in the beginning of Operation Barbarossa when the Soviets having 25000 tanks in all and about 10000 in the European part of the country close to the border definitely lost to Germans having only 3000 Panzers. The tanks need for effective work lots of other stuff: good logistics, infantry and artillery support, communications and lots and lots. And this whole lot is very vulnerable to air attacks. Yeah, the image of a Tiger hit by a fighter bomber may be extremely rare but the same image of supply columns for these Tigers hit by aviation - no problem. The net result will be the same as for Soviets with their 25000 tanks.
