This is the battle between Roman Legion and Flandian Army somewhere in Europe. This is the Siege of the Flandiva settlement. The cause of this battle is when the Flandian tribe (one of the Germanic Tribes) kills the few Roman citizens and nobles name Varius Laurentius and captures his wife, Lydia Laurentius. Knowing this incident, The Roman Emperor decided to punish the Flandish tribes and sent Legion XXI Rapax led by Roman General "Legatus" Arius Valerius and First Centurion name "Alexius Severus"

Ladders for such low palisade? Anyway, it's a stratagem confirmed by a Roman source :) See Livivs , History of Rome, Book 40-45: "A party of Roman youths actually gained possession of the lowest part of the wall, by turning to the purposes of war a kind of sport which they were accustomed to practise in the circus. [4] In those times, when the present extravagant fashion of filling the area with beasts of every kind was yet unknown, it was customary to contrive various kinds of amusements; for when one chariot race and one equestrian performer were exhibited, both the performances scarcely filled up the space of an hour. [5] Among other diversions, in the more elaborate games, about sixty young men in arms, sometimes more, used to be introduced, whose performances were partly a representation of troops going through the military exercise, and partly a display of more accurate skill than appeared in the practice of [p. 2067]soldiers, and which approached nearer to the mode of fighting used by gladiators. [6] After performing various evolutions, they formed in a square body with their shields raised over their heads, and closed together, the foremost standing upright, the next stooping a little, the third and fourth lines more and more, and so on, until the hindmost rested on their knees, thus composing a covering in the shape of a tortoise-shell, and sloping, like the roof of a house. [7] Then two armed men, who stood at the distance of about fifty feet, ran forward, and after some menacing flourishes of their arms, mounted over the closed shields, from the bottom to the top of this roof; and, treading as steadily as if on solid ground, sometimes paraded along the extreme edges of it, as if repelling an enemy, and sometimes encountered each other on the middle of it. Okay, thank you for your answer. So it was indeed a tactic, though one that was improvised in the heat of battle. Also, I agree with your comment about the low palisade and the ladders :). Do you think anyone even built their palisade that low? Ladders would have been way more efficient, because of what I saw, and also saw in your other videos, only four men can climb up before the formation is broken. If you send more up, the testudo is not working anymore, so climbing becomes impossible. And only four men will get butchered by the enemy.

@@ichotolot9616 first of all, the legionaries get up on the palisade with their shield and swords in their hands, not sheathed like it would have been if they used ladders.

@@ichotolot9616 and the Roman formations would be a ton bigger, so more men could be able to get up. Imagine 10 cohorts of 480 men using this formation, and you get the idea. They would have maybe brought up ladders at that point or used siege towers.

No, the fire arrows were real, and were used by a lot of Nations, Roma one of the first.
