Now the initial excitement is over, is Warhammer the Old World still fun to play and collect? Overall, yes but there are some frustrations

This game offeres something that has really been missing from the warhammer offerings for so long. Its such a great ruleset. It really plays well

As someone who skipped 8th and part of 7th, I think it's fantastic. So many problems fixed. Are characters on huge monsters a bit too good? Maybe. Is a level 4 wizard too necessary? Maybe. But over all, it feels really good. Now I wish they'd just hurry up and get more model ranges out. It's hard to convince my friends to buy into this game when they literally cannot buy the models for it at the store.

I like that it’s not costing me a small car any more to get some bret models. It’s a fun game but I don’t play competitive. Seeing how competitive play is really affecting 40K I’m glad it’s aimed differently.

TOW definitely has a very solid rules foundation otherwise it would be hemorrhaging interest due to a lack of armies, similar to how Horus Heresy 2.0 has really struggled to maintain interest when so few options are available for army building still. At this point I would not be surprised if TOW is the fastest growing game out of the current roster given the negativity with 40k and fears of oversimplification in AoS.

Pretty good summary, warts and all. I’ve not got many games in, but I’m enjoying it so far. The many special rules seem to be both its strength and weakness - understanding how they interact is essential, I’ve had to do reminder cards for all my units so I don’t miss anything. However it does open lots of tactics. As a very long term player who started with the second edition, I’m pleased and amused to see the return of push backs in the form of FBIGO - which has made the game a little less painful for my Ld7 Empire. It’s also fun to see the original spell lores and some very old spells return (hello wind blast my old friend). As I already have a very large collection, the supply issues haven’t impacted me much, but I do feel for those it has - definitely the biggest risk for the game going forwards. I mat actually see if I can get the other half to let me attend some events ;-)

Great video with a lot of points I either agree with or have had myself. I have approached TOW as 'its up to the dice' and have had more fun than I can remember war gaming so it has been refreshing.

there's some early game jank. There's some stuff I think could be handled better - for example I think AoS's magic system is dramatically better than Old Worlds. Adding caster level to casting and unbinding rolls skews magic way too far towards wizards, being able to cast the same spell multiple times, even stacking their effects, is also a mistake. Speaking of stacking, letting bonuses and penalties stack with themselves - for example 2 vamp count mortis engines stacking their auras for +2 to cast and +2 to movement for everything nearby is also bad. Letting every model in the combat rank fight regardless of whether they're in base with an enemy is also problematic - it feels like the the 1e AoS rule saying you measure 'from the model' and ignore bases, a rule designed to pretend that you don't have to rebase your models, something to be ditched with haste as soon as everyone has finished rebasing their old armies anyway. There's also maybe too much emphasis on redressing ranks for a game that will mostly be played on unit trays which can't just change shape arbitrarily. So yeah, there's jank to be worked out, but the overall underlying structure is really good and it plays really well. Fun games, surprisingly fast despite the number and complexity of rules and the number of models on the table at a time. Games look good, play good, it up there with my favorite editions of Warhammer fantasy already. Real promising stuff.

The game seems popular. There are more regular players in my community than AoS. There are also a lot of content creators talking about the game.

I am enjoying TOW immensly, returned to my first ever army vampire counts, the game while needs improving as all games is better than all similar games

The magic system really hinders the experience in my opinion. It feels very non-interactive outside of list building . The dice pool system from 7th was actually my favourite. It allowed for a fun and tactical mini game. ToW’s 2D6 feels like a coin flip and ultimately feels bad.

I think it's a decent and fun game. For competitive games I do believe that Infantry isn't the strongest choice, but Monsters, Cavalry and Chariots are strong. I think most will have fun with it. What I dislike is how most armies don't have all units available. Deleting Beastmen from AoS didn't help.

Oh god I hope that stratagems and command points dont get added to Old Word! If they do, prepare for the game to loose all the tactical play and be replaced with pure math-hammer. I mean, hey doesn't really effect me since if I have 6th ed rule and armybooks so I'll just drop out of the whole hobby again and go back to 6th.

I am fine with Vampire Counts getting sidelined. Less chance of GW of screwing with the lore and even more reason to get Skeletons from Warlord Games that match my old stuff way better then the current Deathrattle skeletons.

TOW is too much of a nostalgic throwback for my tastes. Too many missed opportunities for innovation that other games have already learned by now

The game is pretty good considering is a GW warhammer game. Sell out tournaments everywhere around here and more than ever.

As a game its clunky confusing and outdated in terms of rules design. It's also got several issues which really hurt it such as line hammer. It however has such huge draw in terms of nostalgia that much of that can be overlooked for a chance to play once again in a supported old world. I grew playing til the day they destroyed it a good 20 years man and boy. I play kings of war by mantic games as my main system and have done for 8 years now. As a rank and flank system it blows old world to pieces and is imo the perfect example of what rank and flank perfection looks like. Balanced fast and incredibly high skill ceiling while being beginner friendly. Old world is keeping my interest solely because of the setting and modelling possibilities. I'm 3 games in and while it's been fun it's been exhausting and a tremendous time drain in terms of learning the rules. Whether I maintain the game or not remains to be seen. The fact I have to think about it at all is probably a telling answer.

No. How can it? It's dead from the start. How can new players start? The miniatures for most armies aren't readily available.

So, you expect hundreds of kits to be available for all factions at the get-go? seems unreasonable for a game that is not in their main games section……

I've printed multiple armies. Even Chaos Dwarves. They're available and cheap.

@@Tarvanis I'd stay away from Norba, bought Scibor myself + printed Fabelzel and Lost Kingdom. Highland minis makes good steppe goblins/warmachine, and Avatars of War do good Black Orcs and Wolf riders. MeshyMesh makes good warmachines and K'daai.

Huh? I’m confused what do you mean minis arnt available? If you walk into a GW or FLGS you can use almost any fantasy model.

It’s not a good ruleset. I have fun playing curated games with picked opponents but the rules competitively are a mess. It encourages lines not rank and flank, and the usual skew lists are incentivised.
