Okay, I will try to make this quick. I have owned a 50K miles 2004 SL600 with the T12 Brabus kit for about four years now. First, there is just nothing like a V12 Mercedes putting out nearly 600 hp. It is a FREIGHT TRAIN on velvet rails. PERIOD. And if you love the feel of a 777 Dreamliner on takeoff ... smooooooth.... graceful... sensual & powerful; then you will love one of these cars. There simply is NOTHING like them. Plus you can drive it around in normal traffic... top up... top down. Quiet, stylish and everything you touch in the interior is either leather or wood. Sumptuous. Okay, let's talk maintenance. Look, this is not a car you buy and drive everyday. This is a weekend toy. A special occasion car... because every single time you get in it and drive it, it becomes a special occasion. I had a problem with my ABC system at 48K miles... the Mercedes Dealer told me $20-$25K to fix it. Criminals. I took it to my independent and it only needed the accumulators. $900. Big deal. You can own these cars, but you MUST find a decent person to do the work. Do some investigating and you will find that guy. Final comment. I have 12 cars and they are all really cool in their own way. Every time I pose this question to my wife "which car you want to take?"... she replies "let's take the little black Jet". Frank Sinatra blasting on the CD with the top down... "Fly Me to the Moon"... these cars are the DEAL of the century. $150K cars on sale for 15 to 20 cents on the dollar.

This 2008 model is okay. I love the SL600 V12, but the last of the good ones was the R129. The successor R230 we see here is when the car was starting to have more cheaper plastics and just didn't have that old school solid Mercedes vibe that the old R129s had. I would rather have a 2004 or earlier model of this Mercedes offering.

Near perfect tidy SL review of a properly spec'd R230. Your knowledge very good because this car is full of exotic Mercedes tech and decadent luxury. A lot of these features were eliminated in new SL's - like the dramatically super cool shifter mounted start button. That still makes me swoon. Peak SL in my opinion. PS.- what's up with the dashboard leather?
@ElliottAlvis4 жыл бұрын
Lawrence Fearon yes! I love the way this car is optioned. And the shifter mounted start button is as cool as it gets! The dash leather could use some attention, but I was trying not to show it so as not to distract from the rest of the review.

The problem with is car is that it was designed and built during Mercedes "Lost Weekend" - 2000 to 2013 - where the cut costs, used inferior materials and build quality looked the other way, all in their seal to become a volume producer. That’s quite a script that you have on the table lol. The mood lighting in the back is 💯. I think for the car to have a sunroof gap should be okay just because it won’t get so hot when the car is sitting outside in a scorching hot summer with the windows down for a little bit (assuming the sunroof can open up). As far as power lift gate, it would be un-Mercedes like if they didn’t offer it on every vehicle lineup they have. It wouldn’t be luxury to pay for Mercedes if that’s not offered lol

@Elliott Alvis - 6:26 - I see where you are coming from with the power lift trunk buttons and all but you gotta realize that to have the convertible top function automatically, you gotta have a power trunk lid to accommodate this. The reason why there's the SUV style buttons is to compensate for this feature. It's actually bad to use a powered assisted lift gate or trunk manually. It's better to let the motors do the work rather than trying to force a manual movement onto the motors which are expected to be still in the moment, so to point out those buttons as useless and just frivolous isn't accurate to say. It's apart of an overall feature and is absolutely needed. I am actually surprised you as a car reviewer didn't catch onto this. That part should have been edited out. It's useless to bring up.

Elliott, to be honest, I do not know where those people got the impression that it was your fault. A car is made of many mechanical and electrical components (injection, ignition, AC, etc...), with very different materials (plastic, steel, rubber, etc...), and they sustain very difficult impacts (vibration, temperature, humidity, pressure, etc...) Thus, some parts give in after some time. On extreme days, under long periods of use, it is very common for those parts to either give in, or simply demonstrate their really state. Maybe that plastic part was already bad - but only under that heat, and for that long - the system had more pressure (due to the heat generated by the engine and the ambient temperature) and opened the "longer" circuit, so, the cooling fluid came out. Or maybe, that pressure enlarged a part which was already cracked. On a more relevant note: Elliott, you need to improve your sound game. And - even more important - you need to find your purpose of KZbin. Sound: You are sometimes far from the microphone, and we barely hear you. Other times, you come closer, and you are loud. And I am no speakers. On headphones it must be more noticeable. Purpose: You did a review on the car. We have Doug DeMuro, Top Gear, and more for that. What was your take on this car? Was it to help us find a luxury car on the cheap?! Was it to improve knowledge on a specific car?! Moreover, you need to find a purpose you can monetize. Cheers!
@ElliottAlvis4 жыл бұрын
hitardo thank you for the constructive feedback! I am still trying to dial in my new microphone setup so it’s taking some trial and error. As far as my purpose on KZbin, this car was a little tough because it’s not mine, so I couldn’t be overly harsh about it, but I also wanted to come full circle and show it getting fixed. I do have other videos where I review the things inside of cars as well as the car itself. I’m still finding my voice I guess you could say. Either way, thank you for the feedback, and thank you for your continued support!

You can tell when someone only drives a convertible for a day :) No, it is not "hilarious to have a panoramic roof, just put the top down", because when it is really hot in summer, you get baked stupid during long drives. I always drive open, including in winter and even in the rain when I am on a roadtrip or driving roads, but you simply cannot drive e.g. all day in the Alps in summer, it literally makes your head explode. There is also no point driving top down at the hight of summer on the Autobahn etc all day, because again, your brain gets frazzled. That Matt dude from Smoking Tyre got himself an R129 SL to daily in LA, where he says he leaves the roof on, because you simply get baked stupid, as well... so if I had an SL, I surely would love that panoramic roof :)
