They are a Dutch symphonic metal band that started the same time as Nightwish 1996. They are considered one of the pioneers of female fronted symphonic metal bands. The lead vocalist is Sharon den Adel who founded the band together with her partner Robert Westerholt. She applied, and was admitted, to the conservatory for opera training but did not like it so she changed over to the arts-academy within her first semester. So apart from that short stay she is complete self-tough. There she studied clothing design and management and completed it successfully. She has mainly used these skills in designing outfits used on stage. They have had a rather successful run in clubs for couple of years where their performances were constantly sold out. Because of that they got invited to the biggest festival in the Netherlands "Pink Pop". Even though they had a very early start the concert was a huge success. They released their single "Ice Queen"shortly after expecting it to be very successful but it did not do much until somewhere in December that year a dj played it on the radio. Suddenly the song shot up in the charts and even took the number 1 spot. Now other countries started to pay attention. I have seen them live 4 times and had i eye contact with her during the last 2 concert. The last time i saw her she was scanning the front rows and when our eyes locked her eyebrow went up and with little question mark like "Have i seen you before?" a bit unsure she raised a hand and gave me thumbs up i responded in kind an big smile appeared of recognition. I never expected her to recognize me with all the performances all over the world. That was so cool. The next song to take a look i would recommend "The promise" from their Black Symphony concert where they were supported by a full symphonic orchestra and choir. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWrOYnyHpMp_d7c

Sharon has really a very beautiful and unique voice. Other great Within Temptation songs: "And We Run feat. Xzibit" --> Symphonic metal meets Rap "Paradise feat. Tarja" --> The first Nightwish singer and Sharon are a great combination "Angels" --> The Video is great and the song has got a different sound to this live performance. Also worth a sto. "Somehere" --> A great duet with Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering) and a complete orchestral support

Yes, Sharon has the whole orchestra backing her; but her voice is still the best instrument in the house.

I couldn't find Nightwish amongst your reactions. A definitely must see. Be sure it will be a long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey including floorfasms :-) My personal suggestion for the some songs in order to give you a nice overview of some "styles" covered by Nightwish: -> Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013): THE "traditional first song" to get into Nightwish. Floor is showing diferent capabilities and you can get a first understanding of Tuomas capability of songwriting -> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast -> There are a couple of great songs from Wacken: Storytime, Song of Myself, Romanticide, Ever Dream, Last Ride of the Day, Ghostriver -> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look at the growls) -> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) and "The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley - get to know the background of this song ahead) -> Then the new stuff with "Noise" (Video), „Shoemaker“, "Harvest (Lyric Video) ... Just my personal thoughts :-) One thing you can definitely be sure of: Every song is different, has some surprising transitions, is intense. And none of the songs you're going to discover will disappoint you. Greetings from Hannover in Germany

I love Within Temptation and Sharon's voice so much -- it has very distinct texture, and she is very comfortable in higher registers. So, you just stepped into Symphonic Metal territory, which means... yes, The Journey! You cannot talk Symphonic Metal without Nightwish -- so my suggestion is Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013; and for Within Temptation I recommend taking a look at Stand My Ground w/Metropole Orchectra, or "Somewhere" from the same venue featuring Anneke van Giersbergen. ;)
