South Sister Summit Climb | Oregon's Third Highest Peak

I summited South Sister (Oregon's third highest peak) in mid-August via the South Sister Climber Trail #36. Follow two mountaineers (Evan and Lisa) summit South Sister in one day. The trail was about 12 miles roundtrip with 5450 feet of elevation gain. It had been very smoky around Bend, Oregon, but we got a break and were able to ascend without the smoke. Yes, we got lucky with having a smoke-free day. It actually turned pretty smoky when we had completed the hike and driving out of the area.

Yeah that does definitely look like it's a bit challenging! You gain a lot of elevation in such a short period of time! It also looks really slippery so luckily you guys had hiking poles with you. I hiked up and summited South Sister! It was a great day weather wise on Saturday. That hike was both challenging and rewarding. The red scree at the end was so tough haha. But so I'm glad I did it!

For South Sister, just regular hiking gear: good pair of shoes, water, food, sunblock, and other hiking essentials. You can do it in a day.

Just saw your comment. I have a pretty lightweight setup for carrying my cameras. I have a GoPro in my side pocket and a larger mirrorless camera fits in my water holder on my shoulder. It's great when I'm going for longer hikes or mountaineering.

Yes, there's a couple water sources along the hike. There's a stream near the beginning and you'll pass by the Lewis Glacier Cirque Lake about 3/4 mile from the top. Have fun.
