A lot different in 1976 when I believe the summit elevation was 12,307 in midsummer. Snow all the way from Lunch counter and no sign of any structure on the summit. Still my absolute favorite Cascade volcano

Thank you for the beautiful video; it was just suggested to me now. I was there in October 2023. Unfortunately, there was a noticeable crack in my left calf when transitioning from the ladder to the rock, and I had a muscle tear. Therefore, I unfortunately couldn't make it to the arch. I was glad that after about 2 hours I was back at the parking lot, as it’s difficult to walk with the injury. The next day, the lower leg was very colorful.😎

Loma Verde, Squeeze Pen, Pink Hill loop should be on the list. We've seen deer, javelina, snakes, Gila Monsters and numerous birds along this loop. Great hike since there are oftentimes few people on the trail. Fewer people sometimes helps with seeing wildlife.

Great video! Thank you! A couple questions for you- 1. roughly how many vertical feet was the section where you ascended the fixed line? 2. have you climbed Mt Hood, specifically prior to the middle sister climb? I'm trying to get an idea of the steepness of the steep section on Middle. I solo climbed Mt Hood via the 1 oclock couloir in june 2024, so that's my baseline for steepness. Thanks!
@WithinHikingDistance
@WithinHikingDistance 8 ай бұрын
I have climbed Hood before Middle Sister up through the Pearly Gates. The steep section was maybe 200 ft. There were other people who had 2 ice axes climbing that section without a rope.

The year I was 60 yo (21 years ago) I did Mt. Adams 3 times in 3 weeks. Campground to summit to campground in one day. Actually drive in from Kennewick WA, climb and drive back the same day. It was prep for a Rainier climb. I did Hood twice - a week apart - prepping for Adams. St. Helens twice, a month apart with South Sister twice in between. That year, and the year before, I did Paradise to Muir a total of 28 times. Being 'in shape' makes walking around on mountains MUCH more enjoyable than not.

For South Sister, just regular hiking gear: good pair of shoes, water, food, sunblock, and other hiking essentials. You can do it in a day.
