Witley Court

A wonderful piece of old England that shows us a glimpse of its past glories that I visited many times as a teenager with friends and family. Lots of good memories including our very own ghost story.

I don't think they actually get that many visitors to be honest. I often think there is something intrinsically romantic about it's ruins that leaves us imagine what it may have been like in it's glory days. I used to go there a lot as a teenager and often we were the only ones there. The grand old ruin brought us a lot of happy memories and the experience of our very own ghost story!

It was in 1971 when I first saw Witley Court. We were planning to have a concert in Witley Church and after lying on my back to admire the ceiling for something like an hour I went and wandered round the house which, to be honest, was in a dangerous state. I was stunned then and I still am. Wasn't a fountain offered to Worcester City Council to go on the roundabout by the cathedral?

It is a pity there is not a restoration of this great place. As a foreigner I wonder why they do not use money taken from visitors to do so.

Personally, if they can restore Castle Howard(A building that was also damaged extensively by fire in 1940) after a devastating fire, so can Witley Court. I feel that it's dumb to keep the building a ruin any more than Riber Castle, which now has a roof and is being restored back into a home. Sooner or later, Witley Court will be restored back into a home once again. Even if it take decades to complete like Castle Howard and Riber Castle.
