for question 4, I solved it by skipping the complicated algebra. I plugged in X equals 3.9 and it satisfied both conditions, so I know both conditions alone cannot determine if X is 3, there is another possibility

Sir, in the third question, if y is real y^2 can’t be negative then that makes X=3 and not X=-3 as per your explanation when the two statements are combined. But, if the second statement itself is giving the answer as X=3 then the answer should be B? Kindly explain where I made a mistake?
@Wizako4 жыл бұрын
Hello Mercy, In the above example, if the value of y^2 is root(21), we can trace x=3. However y^2 can take n number of values. Therefore, we are unable to deduce that x is definitely equal to three. For example, if y^2 = root(28), x turns out to be 4. There is not a specific condition for the exact value of y. I hope that I have answered your question. Best wishes for your GMAT Prep!

Last question (question 4) How do you know x lies between 0 and 3 based off .....x(x-3)
@Bloo_M4 жыл бұрын
If X is negative, x(x-3) would be a product of two negative numbers, which would make it positive and thus greater than 0, so x has to be greater than 0. If it is equal or greater than 3 you always have a product of two positive numbers, so it's also positive

Sir, one question. In question 4, statement 1, won't the solution of X(X-4)< 0 be X
@Wizako4 жыл бұрын
No Aditi. The product of x and (x - 4) is negative when one of the numbers is negative and the other is positive. The possibility of x being negative and (x - 4) being positive is illogical. So, x will be positive and (x - 4) will be negative. The solution finally becomes 0 < x < 4. Cheers

A small explanation in question 3? If y is real also... Then also why it not choose other positive value.... As in why it stick to (/_21)...as statement 1 and 2 are individual statement
@Wizako3 жыл бұрын
We have combined the statements to arrive at the answer as all other options didn't yield a unique answer, i.e. x = 3. When we evaluated both statements together, we found that as x = +3 or -3 (from statement 1). From statement 2: y^2 cannot be a negative value. Hence y^2/7 cannot also be a negative value. Since y^2/7 is equal to x, and we also found out that x can be +3 or -3 before, we conclude that x is a positive 3 now (which we are required to prove). So statements together are sufficient to answer the question.
