@Charlie Henderson Yes from your point of view but to many they would have been looking at their watches wondering when the plot would move on. Its a question of timing, otherwise the whole thing would have been in. Sometimes in a storyline you have to draw a line to make the rest effective! Its why so many really good scenes end up on the cutting room floor. i.e. The Jitterbug song and dance scene ws cute but ended up (sadly) in the bin!

@MrRondonmon Both versions end in exactly the same way, with the Scarecrow collapsed on the ground with a bit of his stuffing having fallen out. From there you can plug in where Dorothy says, "Wonderful! Why, if our scarecrow back in Kansas could do that, the crows would be scared to pieces!" The person who made this video for YT rather clumsily tacked on the "Won't you take me with you?" line.

As someone with perfect pitch, I noticed since early childhood that the Scarecrow sang his “If I only had…” piece in a different key from the other two characters. He sang in D major while everyone else sang in Eb major. Why is that? Also, in this deleted scene, he does sing the extra lyrics comfortably in Eb. It can’t be out of his range, so there was either an artistic purpose or an accidental inconsistency.

Maybe someone noticed that the fence rails started vibrating before he hit them in the last part of the dance, revealing that the film was reversed. Unlike today, in those days, film makers didn't want the public to know the secrets of their 'magic'. Also, though amazing, the dance was long, and in those days, movies used to run about one and a half hours, and this may have just pushed it a bit far over.
@starey17 жыл бұрын
if movies were about 90 minutes back then, how do you account for "GONE WITH THE WIND" which came out the same year; and was 4 hours?
@autophyte7 жыл бұрын
Of course, there have always been exceptions. Usually those 'blockbuster movies' have been adaptations of very famous books, Which could not retain their integrity in a short movie. "Gone with the Wind" was one. another was 'Les Miserables' , a silent directed by Henri Fescourt, that ran a staggering 5 hours 54 minutes!

I think some of this should stay in, but is overly long though. The miming between Scarecrow and Dorothy is a bit hard to watch, and the way Scarecrow comicly floats up, especially with the pumpkin, is strange. Other than that, it should have stayed, but at a significantly shorter length.
@elenacarin91536 жыл бұрын
happy little accident yeah. I won’t forgive them for cutting out the Dorothy/Scarecrow romance 😑 it’s kinda still there but still, like honestly “And perhaps I’ll deserve ya and be even worthy of ya if I only had a brain.” 😭 Like so sweet!
@MaskedMan665 жыл бұрын
@Elena Carin You need to have something explained to you. ONE of the over twenty writers who contributed to the script one way or another had the notion of Dorothy being nineteen and having a crush on Hunk the farmhand, who of course turned up in her dream as the Scarecrow. (This was possibly inspired by the original stage version of "Wizard," in which an older Dorothy had a flirtation with Sir Dashemoff Daily, the Poet Laureate of Oz.) Mervyn LeRoy, the producer, deep-sixed that idea very quickly, saying that Dorothy should be a child, as she was in the book. The only vestige of the "romance" idea is Dorothy's parting line to the Scarecrow.

One doesn't necessarily have to be a Director to realize that as wonderful as this number is, it is a bit over produced. It there weren't the other two characters to be introduced, this wouldn't have been an issue. But there needed to be a balance in screen time for each of the characters and what they represent. There is a thing called timing and pacing that is essential to maintaining interest and momentum. That is why this number was cut.
