BIG DIFFERENCE! Hannibal Barca almost won. He had all the tools at his disposal, but ultimately Carthage was a society of merchants and Rome a society of soldiers. Carthage never fully backed Hannibal due to the fear of his possible popularity after defeating their biggest enemy. It's one of the biggest what-ifs to historians. Valyria just curb stomped them everytime. I know I'm comparing something insignificant, but the effort that went into Hannibal Barca's campaign can never be overstated. It ultimately failed, but just like Grand Admiral Thrawn, it was never the fault of his skills. Sorry for the long spill 😅 Check out HistoryMarche

A very interesting video. It is a shame that the distant past of the World of ice and Fire is not more defined (I would like to know more about Yi Ti beyond what you could read in "The World of Ice and Fire and the few details in the books). But we should better not give Martin wrong ideas what to focus on... It is a irony, that while Old Ghis and its legions did fall so longe ago, more of their heritage and traditions has survived than of both their main enemies. The Sarnori are almost gone, and the tongue of the Valyrians is spoken mainly by scolars and few remaining distant relatives of the dragonriders of old. Somehow the old harpy had the last laugh, at least it seems.

Well across Ghiscar and in Slaver’s Bay they speak languages that come from Old Valyrian much like those of the free cities (similar to Latin becoming the Romance languages), while Old Ghiscari is essentially extinct in all forms, so Old Valyrian not being spoken still isn’t really a “win” for Old Ghis.

One would think the Ghiscari truly learned the horrors of slavery when they were conquered by the Valyrian Freehold, maybe learning insights about their own brutality. But no, the Ghiscari still practice slavery in ASOIAF. In a twist of events, the last true Valyrian will eventually eradicate that vile practice and mend her ancestors wrongdoings. Daenerys Targaryen will prevail!

I gotta give it to Ghiscari, building an empire of that size via brute strength, no dragons needed. Valyrians were nothing but sheepherders before discovering dragons. I've always said Valyrians would be sought after bed slaves if it werent for Dragons.
@thatoneblackdude33333 ай бұрын
It's easy to build a powerful empire when you make slaves do it for you , and I'm tired of this downplaying of valyreans they also had magic and valyrean steal they didn't rely completely on dragons nor are they nothing without them .
@agentopaque37763 ай бұрын
@@thatoneblackdude3333 Wtf literally every single empire used slavery not just Ghiscari. They came out ontop despite that and subjugated everyone else using their lockstep legions and great commanders. Valyrians are literally NOTHING but sheep herders without their dragons. I would argue that without them discovering dragons they would have been conquered and enslaved by the Ghiscari. Valyrian steal and all the other great monuments came about AFTER they discovered dragons and used their new slaves to build all of that.
@thatoneblackdude33333 ай бұрын
@@agentopaque3776 the fact that they discovered magic and valyrean steal without slaves shows that the valyreans aren't nothing without dragons, ghiscari are nothing without slaves just a bunch of arrogant Rich people taking advantage of the weak there's nothing praise worthy about that.
@Radonatorr3 ай бұрын
@@thatoneblackdude3333 The Ghiscari literally created the oldest and one of the longest lasting civilizations in the entire history of the World of Ice and Fire. Old Ghis was already old when Valyrians tamed their first dragons and created their first cities, forming their civilization in the shadow of Ghis. Valyrians became great by emulating Ghis. Their created their great civilization under the influence of Old Ghis, who was already great. And who else but Ghis would be albe to wage 5 different wars against dragons and not be destroyed immediately, like the lords of Westeros during Aegon's conquest? In the pyramid of Meereen there are even Ghiscari reliefs showing defeated Valyrian soldiers, so despite eventually loosing the war Ghiscari still managed to win some battles. Don't downplay the Ghiscari
@HainiDjokovic19953 ай бұрын

The story and the Valeryan Sphinxes with the Fisher Queen stories and the Chimeria'i (sp?), they are same story different teller from a different person in time? Or is the eternal battle of light and dark a necessary for planetos. Oh heavens ...could you imagine what would happen in the USA if magic was real!? Yikes.
