I was under the impression that with rattlesnake bites you keep the bitten body part LOWER than the heart -- this video says the opposite. I just looked it up and found: "Keep the injured area still and make sure it is lower than the heart. The person who has been bitten should only walk if absolutely necessary. Carry them to safety if possible." hmm....

The odds of dying in the US are about 1/1000, or in that neighborhood, if you receive antivenom within 2 hours. If you do not, your odds start to go downhill very quickly. My neighbor is a nurse and told me the story of a local who tried to pick up a rattlesnake and it bit his hand. So, being the genius he is, he tried to pick it up with his unbit hand and it got bit too. They had to call around to all the area hospitals and it took every drop of anti-venom in our corner of the state to keep him alive. The man nearly died. Don't mess with rattlers...

Nice how these people speculate but honestly have no idea..many factors different in each case: 1 rattlesnake is a different type than mamba& coral ...this sounds like a bad reporting job and it also sounds like coral or mamba probably mamba given the symptoms match the type of venom and mambas are more aggressive than coral also lightning fast compared to pit vipers rattlesnake cottonmouth etc. Coral does the same thing but coral snakes are more cowardly in confrontation..trust me I have a yard full of all these.. I have killed one That I am positive is a taipan Australians swear up & down that "only Australia has that" but remember crocodile Hunter ..is who they try to sound like and they haven't seen Hwy 231 mountain area. Either.. Also a coachwhip has a totally different head shape than this one ..this one has fangs also head shaped like a spoon 66 inches long. Deadly..if you play with snakes you are playing with fire.. A king snake & maybe a rat snake are the only 2 snakes I will tolerate in my yard.. About a week ago a mamba (mine are actually black not grey like Australia's "black mamba" btw ..the minow face is a key way to spot and no mistaking a 7 foot snake that zigzags "s" with his head off the the ground and fangs that strike 8 times to nothing. A coral is different also the fangs in a coral ..a shorter snake red&yellow fangs are already out. Small head but both can kill any man ..if they are full grown "snake" can if bitten and no help is sought.. 5 hours is the max for coral but don't get more than 30 minutes on either the bites may not even swell but they both lock up your respiratory system mambas taipans & cobras all have lethal bites but strike differently ..the toxin is close to the same .. Cobras are the biggest mambas are the fastest taipans are the most deadly by amount of venom it takes to kill . rattlesnakes.. Are nothing to play with imagine a flames burning your skin from inside out or melting your muscle away like acid..thats what a rattlesnake bite is like ..

The recommendation is always changing, but just as tourniquets are no longer recommended for their focusing the venom in one region where it can thus be more destructive, so too is lowering or elevating your limbs. Accordingly, I think it would be best to just lay down, rest, and be calm as possible. That way the venom won't be focused in one particular area and will be equally diluted in all areas. Then your liver can clean your blood before the venom can do any permanent damage.

The one thing they teach you about ALL snake bites that are venomous is to put ice on it to reduce the swelling and to slow the venom down , then all those other things come after that. However, as in the case of the black widow spider a person CAN be allergic to the bite and THAT will cause very rapid death. Black Widows are poisonous/venomous but in order for you to die from their bite you must be allergic to it. And there's only one way to find out and I ain't ready to try it yet so don't look at me :)

back in the 70.s a neighbor talking with his grown daughter in his back yard sat down on the top step of the porch did not see the snake and wham he leaped of the steps and rolled on the ground with the snake still stuck in his back. His daughter killed the rattler with a shovel rite away but her dad was dead of a heart attack already. They found a fang still embedded in his kidney . I always felt sad for her when she stopped to visit
@nathan28133 жыл бұрын
HOW would he get a fang in his kidney?? Snakes don't lose their fangs when they strike. To me it's SHOCKING that people will sit down without first looking where they're sitting - like women sitting in the toilet bowl because a man didn't put the seat back down after he peed! :oD I wonder if the man was intoxicated.

Think of natures compassion to have rattlesnakes evolve their rattlers as a warning sign. Of course its more of a selfish survival mechanism to save venom for prey and not get stepped on but still Its so beautiful to me, not the sound of it but what it means. Let me help you some. For some unknown reason rattlesnake bites vary in the kind, and amount of damage they do, in the South. I was friends with an elderly lady that was bitten in the leg. She had an initial sore like a cut. After it healed, her leg shrank below the bite until it was only 2/3 the size of the normal or unbitten leg. After a few months the pain went away , and it was 30 years later, when I knew her. Same smaller sized leg, without pain.Another man, also in Florida, worked construction, and caught rattlesnakes on his earthmoving job, to sell to zoo's. One bit him on his fingers. He couldn't stand the pain, so he had three fingers amputated. Months went by, and he still had excruciating pain. Had hand amputated, so he was left with a wrist stub. Six months later he was no better, so they amputated half his forearm . Still further along the timeline, they took his remaining forearm and elbow. It continued hurting, and he was trying to decide if he wanted to remove his shoulder. This was in the 1970's. Slides of the man, each, with a new missing part of his body, were shown by the U.S. Government ( Fish and Wildlife Service) at Merritt Island National Wildlife in Florida,( a National Wildlife Refuge superimposed on NASA, or Cape Kennedy Land,) where we launch rockets and Space shuttles. Unfortunately, I had to sit near the head of the entire region, to watch the slide show. When we were shown the slide of the missing elbow with the stub left below the shoulder, the regional head ,( a guy named Ken Black) got the dry heaves, and had to leave. It was difficult to keep from laughing out loud, but since only two of us saw him, we would have been run out of the meeting for being so insensitive to the snake bite victim. All the slides showed a heeled stub. ( no blood, and tendons exposed.) I'm an old man, but somewhere those slides exist, and probably a few old farts like myself, that saw it also. I have heard frequently since then, that in some cases the bite severity is related to how long it had been since the snake struck it's earlier victim. BUT, an equal number of writings mention like I did, that no matter the snake size, or the time of an earlier bite, Rattle snake bites in the Southern United States vary from one individual to the next. Death is possible. Copperheads are the least poisonous of our Southern poisonous snakes. Few die of their bite. Have a great day.
@bassnazi47136 жыл бұрын
John Smith now we are having more hybrids between the copperhead and cottonmouth that are a little trickier too. Crazy that many cures might come from their venom in the next decade or two though, rattlers included.
@littleshepherdfarm21286 жыл бұрын
97ozku: Yes unless it the other type of venom which goes to your nervous system rather than attack your muscle and arterial tissues. In that case ( the Bushmaster and Fer De Lance are perfect examples of south American venomous species that WILL go to your nervous system) you would want to slow the effects down as much as possible and definitely use antivenin. Other species that inject this type of nerve attacking compound includes the cobra family and sea snake family. Sea snakes that reside in salt water (as far as I know) have no cure for their bites so you either live through it on your own or you die...and I've never heard of any case where a person survived it.
@bobbykennedy36366 жыл бұрын
okay this doctor missed a crucial first aid point where a snake bite is concerned, if you have a water jug of water, your on the job, camping, what ever, a jug of ice water, if it is on a leg or arm, place the wounded limb in the ice water, or ice the effected area immediately in first aid prep for transport. Do not use the turnicid, but if possible do ice it as best as possible, keep the patient calm, the actual best thing the patient can do is go to sleep and take a nap, let someone transport them to the hospital, and hope the anti venom works, once bitten, it is what it is, remain calm, panic will only make you die for sure, remain calm, ice it, get to the hospital quickly, you have a real good chance of survival, but the wound from a rattlesnake is going to be horrible
@bobbykennedy36366 жыл бұрын
what ever you think mister, I am trained in this actual first aid, been in the Jungle. and you? you place the limb bitten in ice water and it actually slows the venom down, so what ever you think, do what you know best.

ben Jovi nah I had no idea. But in ambulances space is at a premium. And at $3200+ a vial and needing 8-12 vials of crofab I don't think most county's will cough it up. Plus unless allergic reaction if you get crofab in the first 4 hours it's highly effective. Also venomlock should be in your first aid if you live in areas with venomous snakes. Also liquid Benadryl.

"If bitten by a rattlesnake or any other poisonous snake, ...". Since Pennsylvania, it would be easier to say, "rattlesnake or copperhead" since water moccasins aren't found above the Fall Line (Macon to Richmond) and coral snakes only from Florida to Louisiana. Those 4 are the only poisonous snakes in the U.S. I expect hospitals are constantly bothered by people nipped by a harmless common water snake. I once saw some gomers bothering a snake they claimed was a water moccasin while canoeing in northern Michigan. I just shook my head.

Removing the head from the venomous snake prior to approaching it greatly reduces the risk of being bit. A shotgun blast from a safe distance will not only remove the snake's head but will render it disintegrated. Just a helpful tip. You're welcome :)

xzqzq: even days. A lot depends on the conditions in its surroundings when you behead it. If it's in the desert and it's really really hot then within a day or two the venom will dry out and buzzards will feed on it.

@@xzqzq I have heard of two instances. An American in one of the southern states killed a rattler which he saw on his lawn. Although the head was severed, a lack of caution on the man's part brought his hand close to the severed head which bit him. Prompt action saved his life. However, a chef in one of the Asian countries was preparing a venomous snake for a meal. Same situation: the severed head of the snake bit the chef. Inadequate action and treatment led to the death of the chef.

My little dog, with no training, and no experience, was barking a strange-sounding, different bark I had never heard before.
