For those people who say this is not karate, I would like to say it is a sport in the video and not a killing game. A sport has its own rules or no one will join it. Putting down and hurt your opponents everytime would bury karate in the world arena. The most difficult thing for kumite is scoring 'in your face' without taking you down. I would say you should not insult those players unless you can beat them under the rules of kumite with a faster reaction time and speed of your punchs and kicks

+Morgan Lam "Putting down and hurt your opponents everytime would bury karate in the world arena" I disagree strongly with this statement. First of all: knocking someone out doesn't mean you're putting him down. In knock-down karate respect is still the most important thing in kumite. Second of all: if you're trained to take the hits knock-down karate doesn't hurt as bad as it might look. Yes, you will usually leave a tournament with some injury, but usually ones that heal within days. "The most difficult thing for kumite is scoring 'in your face' without taking you down" In knock-down karate the most difficult thing is to actually take someone down. Having effective technique isn't easier than having 'correct' technique. Why do you think it is? "I would say you should not insult those players unless you can beat them under rules of kumite with faster reaction time and speed of your punchs and kicks" But knocking someone down or knocking someone out isn't an insult in knock-down karate. I see that shotokan karateka's on youtube tend to celebrate their points. In all knock-down karate tournaments I've been in celebrating your points while on the tatami was seen as highly disrespectful. Why should karate be a challenge of reaction time and speed and not mental and physical strength as well? Surely testing your body and mind to their limits is essential in karate. I hope you will open your mind and accept knock-down karate as a valid form of karate. Osu!

All respect for these athletes, but in my opinion they should have made a tournament like the Japanese Kyokushinkai tournaments where they beat and kick the hell out of each other. Like this i will enjoy olympic karate as little as olympic boxing.

Pisuke Soramame Funakoshi didn't speak for all Karate-Ka. Motobu Choki, for instance, hated him. Funakoshi wrote some very important texts but that doesn't mean his word is some kind of scripture.
@pisukesoramame28679 жыл бұрын
I practice motobu-ryu. In motobu-ryu we have no tournaments. Motobu was a violent man in his youth however he changed his approach as he grew older. By then he didn't hate funakoshi anymore although he critized the way Karate was practised in Tokyo.
@davidbrierley20909 жыл бұрын
My point was not that Motobu in particular favoured tournaments, but that just because Funakoshi said something doesn't mean its right. In Okinawa a hundred years ago, there were no tournaments. Now, there are tournaments. There are far more people today practicing Classical Okinawan Karate than in 1920 - there are also many hundreds of thousands practicing WKF Karate. Both have their place in the world, and the existence of one does not harm the existence of the other.
@pisukesoramame28679 жыл бұрын
David Brierley I really thought about your statement, it is a reasonable point of view I guess. Still find it hard to accept though, that this is called Karate too. It is just so different, and I do not mean the movement but the principles and objectives. At least one should make a clear distinction between Karate that is Budo and Sports Karate I think. For me the former is the "real" Karate, the Karate that really matters.

so,... what is all that so called "kumite" doing in this video? it's a promotion for KARATE right? not some horrible fighting sport! (i'll be ashamed if this will become a olympic sport). every time someone displayes some inpropper behavior (like you see in almost ALL these kumite clips), they would be Lucky if they where allowed to keep training in our dojo. i really hope that the WKF will wake up at some point, and try their best to return kumite to being karate. at least kata can still be called karate....
@thensho10 жыл бұрын
the level of kumite you see here is far below that of te national championships that i used to compete in a few years ago. back then, both karateka showed each other a respectfull match. this is nothing more than a degrated fighting sport
@ИвайлоНиков-о8ч10 жыл бұрын
thensho My friend it is surprisingly unexpected from someone who used to practice this sport to say/think/write such words/thoughts/comment. Everybody who is deep in Karate stuff will understand that you are NOT, even a little, not even a bit, competent of this martial art and your words and opinion mean a big NOTHING, I regretted reading your comment. Go Find yourself in ballet!
@lukkiop10 жыл бұрын
I agree with you man. I think the aggressive responses are born from people who aren't willing to accept the truth regarding the WKF's recent decline and separation from important values. The kumite these days is so unrealistic and the matches are usually so botched by the judges that there's hardly any point in it anymore. I also think it's really shameful for karateka to resort to insults and profanity over a simple disagreement over the way our "art" not sport should be represented. Ain't all medals and pretty euro women y'all. Some people dedicate their lives to this. Wake up karateka
@thensho10 жыл бұрын
that is the first response from someone who practices real karate, thank you lukkiop! i remember when i used to compete at the european championships goju-kai karate. these kumite matches where really intense, while maintaining the right karate techniques and spirit. and the same for the national championships here in the Netherlands (all styles, not just goju). i said this during the live stream of the recent world championships as well: the higher the championships (national, european, world), the lower the level of the karateka. just to be clear, there are exceptions of course!!!! karateka who behave propperly. karateka with inpropper behavior should be the exceptions though... i just can't understand how the WKF allowed it to turn into this
@najib13610 жыл бұрын
lukkiop Well if you count Karate not a sport, but rather an art, then it has absolutly no place in the Olympics. Now, regarding the degrading of Karate, I hope you all realize that firstly, Western mentality is different from Eastern, and their personalities will obviously change the sport once it becomes famous in the West. I can go into that deeper if you want to later, but there's no point right now. Secondly, I'm pretty sure WKF is trying to make this sport more popular and more recognized, and that requires public appeal. In the video they clearly use emotional appeal, with people celebrating their points (maybe even too much), and portraying how Karate is a fun and exciting sport. You can agree or disagree, but Karate has evolved into a sport once it bacame golbalized, and yes it did lose many of it's traditional values. I think we all have our opinions on that, I myself have been competing on the national level for many years, and enjoyed the way sport Karate is.
this is not the budo karate this is dancing on the tatami

@Kagemaru9998 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with the fact that karate fight rules encourage the karateka, in addition to hit hard, to try to influence the judges by of course making a Kiai but unfortunately also : - Rising their fist and yelling (which is not a kiai anymore) to show they scored (just like in taekwondo) - Looking at all referees - Spining and stopping the fight As a result lots of karateka use "the pause after a hit" habits to fake a pause and then hit. (Agayev, even he doesn't really need that to win, he's just taking the best of the karate rules and habits)) Fix the rules please. K.

@chromerhodium8 жыл бұрын
I like both styles. The Difference the Kumites is that the Kyokushin Kumite is more of a battle of Endurance and Stamina. While the Shotokan/JKA is more of a battle of Speed and Technique. I think we should be more open minded to other styles of Karate. :)
