Go Here to Download Your Book - www.myboxingcoach.com - Let's jump into a Wladimir Klitschko fighting style analysis, well worth it given the quality of the Ukrainian heavyweight king.
Wladimir Klitschko won the gold medal in the super-heavyweight class in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He held versions of the heavyweight title in the professional ranks for almost 10 years and for a large part of that time he was pretty much dominant.
Now, whilst for me Wladimir was involved in one of the most boring heavyweight fights I've ever seen (when he lost his title to Tyson Fury), there is a huge amount to admire and indeed learn from the Wladimir Klitschko fighting style.
Starting with his boxing stance, Wladimir has quite a wide stance and has his body largely side on (often called 'bladed'). His weight is most often on his rear leg, so he has a keen eye on risk management - he has a defensive fighting style.
A really interesting aspect of the Wladimir Klitschko fighting style is his lead hand position. His lead hand is often half extended towards the opponent. This has a number of benefits - there is a shorter distance for the jab to travel, it provides a presence in the opponent's 'space' helping apply pressure, it acts as a probe, assisting with range finding and provides an advanced defensive position.
There can be a vulnerability with the half-extension of the lead hand in that wide hooks can come over the top. The Wladimir Klitschko fighting style deals with this risk by always being willing to push away at any sign of trouble.
The Wladimir Klitschko jab is fantastic, it's interesting to wonder how much the half-extension contributes to the quality of his jab.
Wladimir's long range work is excellent, regularly combining the jab with the lay back. The Wladimir Klitschko fighting style also includes a fantastic right hand, incorporating lots of rotation of the hips driving real power. Klitschko doesn't want to mess about with close range work, infighting, he simply ties up the opponent.
The Wladimir left hook is also outstanding. He uses lots of feints and will regularly deliver super left hooks off the feint. Even when using left hooks (which is more high risk than using straight punches), Klitschko slams his weight onto his back leg thereby enabling that defensive posture to follow (risk management is always there).
So, for me Wladimir Klitschko fighting style is all about wearing the opponent down at long range, tiring them out to then move in for the kill when he feels the risk levels have dropped.
Plenty to learn.
Cheers
Fran

I liked you either way and believe you are the most cerebral boxing coach on KZbin BUT calling Fury the most boring heavyweight fighter made me like you even more, Fran. Much love from Greece, you're helping people blossom into better fighters and I've personally learned a lot from you. Wish I'd have someone as sharp and open minded as you as a coach. Oh well, KZbin will suffice for now... Much love!

Great analysis. I would also mention the fact that he has one of the highest knock out rates. It was 92% at one point but that might have changed towards the end of his career, even higher than Rocky Marciano. I feel the analysis didn’t quite do justice to the power he brought to bear, which combined with his prudence, makes an effective synthesis, which I highly appreciate despite being the exact opposite kind of boxer, aggressive, wading forward, weight 50/50 or slightly on the forward leg, and not bladed but square, lots of flank stepping lateral movement, switching stances ambidextrous ad lib, which necessarily costs more energy and legwork but movement is life, close range knock outs, knock outs with slips, knock outs with rolls, hooks, uppercuts, and drives. I don’t like Klitchko’s style, I always felt one armed boxers are easy to finish, just circle bait and time him right then go in, tigers kill alligators by circling, foxes kill cranes by circling, mongoose kills cobras by circling, one armed long ranged bombers are two dimensional tyrants and three dimensional sitting ducks.

I noticed I naturally have a stance like Wladimir, in terms of stance. Cool to see a break down! I'm a natural righty but feel more comfortable as a southpaw, my lead hand is my stronger hand so it's usually out mid range. I'll practice the jab, pull back, jab a lot! I'm a novice boxer, but love the style of Wlad, Dmitry Bivol & other eastern European boxers.

You Should Study Naseem Hamed too ! He was a Right Hander fighting out of the southpaw stance that would switch back & forth from orthodox (Which was his first stance he learned as a kid) & southpaw. His Coach, “Brendan Ingle” coached his students to fight in orthodox, southpaw And completely-Squared up stance (ALMOST like the Cus D’Amato style of Footwork & Angle-Shifting) But coach Brendan ingle taught his fighters to fight with hands completely down & dancing around switching stances(which CAN be dangerous, UNLESS you have a coach to work you into that style, & successfully use it in Sparring) I understand not everyone loves Naseem Hameds Style/Arrogance, BUT his fighting methods were brutally effective, he was ORIGINALLY an “orthodox” right handed fighter, then (once he mastered using the southpaw stance) he would trick his opponents into thinking he’s a Natural southpaw, Jabbing with the right hand & pulling out of range, taunting his opponents, & once they lunged in out of Anger, & over reach , he would swiftly step into his “Original” orthodox stance to counter his opponents with a Check Left Hook, from the orthodox stance OR a Rear/Right Cross out of the orthodox stance. Brilliant stuff

1:50 - you seem to be misinformed here. Soviet union boxers weren't allowed to turn pro up until 1992 or so. When they were allowed to, it's didn't take too long until they've began to dominate professional boxing. In the past 10 years they've been dominant throughout all divisions.

Great video! I wonder if he had a significantly different style before his earlier knockout losses. His defence improved because of those losses, but ultimately he lost his final two fights partly because of that risk averse style. I remember against Eddie Chambers Manny Steward really told Wlad off for refusing to finish Chambers and being too happy to win without taking any risks. But it's really easy to say that from the keyboard. Even smaller hw guys like chambers, povetkin and haye could still pack a big punch. And against joshua it was a surprise AJ got a second wind, so it wasn't the worst idea to not go all in in the 6th.

Aright, Fran lad. Predictions for Eubank v Smith ???????
@myboxingcoach
@myboxingcoach Жыл бұрын
Dunno you know. Is Smith in the same category as Saunders and Groves? Eubank Jr came up well short against those fellas and Smith is better most of Eubank's recent opponents. Can box a bit Smith but can be a slow starter and Eubank is naturally bigger and stronger I reckon. I'd probably edge for Eubank.
@pestcreeper274

@@myboxingcoach I think Smith has a much better brain, Eubank has a tank, and he can have a tare up but he comes unstuck with lads that can box and move. I hope Smith wins, can't stand Eubank.
