I kept mine as standard, but added alloy metal drift wheels/plastic tires. The original transmitter is a good start, but the 12428 transmitter works too. No binding required. Just comes down to size of transmitter, steering wheel, and dials over buttons. Other wise, a very fun machine, upgrades or not. All I suggest is drift wheels/tires to start with. Loads of epic fun to he had.

Nice to see the K989 racing against a Mini Z. Like mine yours most likely has too tight of a mesh between the pinion and spur gears, doesn't hurt to loosen the diffs as well. If you manage to tweak those it should roll much better and not be that stiff, practically stopping every time you get off the throttle. Beaver's hobby channel did a full series on improving the K989 it's worth a watch and maybe rematch the cars, I'd watch that.

@@rahmatullahpatel1670 it should lessen the amount by a lot actually. In the video their car pretty much locks the wheels as soon as they get off throttle. Adjusting the pinion mesh helps a lot but building the differentials with a bit of grease transforms the handling and the power of this car. The first K989 I bought I couldn't even run the battery down properly as the ESC would shut itself off midway from the strain of running the car with gears that tight, wltoys have improved but even on the 284131 I had that same issue only to lesser degree. Can't recommend beaver's hobby channel tutorial enough (followed the touring series all the way) in helping me extract the potential of these little cars

I have one of these. I don't know if anyone noticed, but the suspension has these little clips you can remove for longer suspension travel. Haven't tried yet, but it's something to remember is all.

Cool video. This is a great RC... i reviewed this 5 years ago on my channel and that it's still being made and sold is telling to how good it is. I think it's a bit too fast for a RCP track like this. Might be worth putting in a standard esc and receiver with a decent radio, turn down the D/R on the throttle to make it more manageable. Also I got a video on my channel showing you were to get full metal CVDs for this model, the stock ones are OK but they are part plastic/metal. Cheers and keep up the cool RC vids!

Gotta get that Mini Z set up better! Do the 'kingpin' flip free mod, 30F/20R degree tires, PN Racing pro-match pinions (for a smoother and quieter run), carbon fiber t-plate (medium), PN racing 50T motor and Soshine 10440 LIFE (2S+2dummy). Make sure the front tires are not touching the body when turning. You may have to Dremel the body a bit. If your car washes out on one side when turning, you might have chassis twist. Add shims between the t-plate and the chassis on the opposite side that washes out. For K989, make sure all the ball joints are smooth and get the same degree tires as above.

It isn't you're driving Joe, it is the screws to the shock towers scraping the diffs making it sticky like a drag brake. 😁 I just finished a tuning of the k989 and even with stock tires it is a beast. Sanded of course. 🤗

Alright Govs? I see you got on board with the WL Toys K989 Rally car. That thing's great and fully worth the price, 'eh??? She handles pretty bloody well and it's similar to the other couple street cars that WL Toys make at this mini scale size. If someone can't afford a Kyosho Pricey Z for $2 HUN, they can get into the scale size hobby at Banggood prices for a pretty decent vehicle, with all the tuning bits available!!! If you can find it on eBay get the "Drift Shark" from GP Toys, you will not be disappointed, that's the best little drift racer I've seen for that teeny size!! The reason it's harder than it looks is the WL 1/12's K989's are crap to handle. Steering is absurd so is the power delivery. I've got some great WL Toys cars but these are not worth the $90. Better off with a Carisma brushless over these or the Mini Z's. The Carisma's are brilliant all round. Steering is fully proportional and smooth as...with very smooth power delivery. I can't stand cars that just stop still when you release the trigger. Spend another 100 bucks and get a Carisma. IMO I'm going to unfortunately give these a miss, Bummer as I really like some of the WL stuff..it's good bang for the buck. Thanks guys.

sure exposes the greedy pricing pf Mini Z :) - Would like WL Toys to intro a range c 1/2this size, slower, more progressive handling / throttle so that a home built circuit is more of a realistic option - maybe offer some smart Controller options too, eg gyro with adj drift angle and proximity collision avoidance (particularly helpful for the novice / whilst learning / more relaxing experience) - Room to reduce pricing further with smaller cars and track components :) - More Scalextric for the 21st century.. Off road buggies with softish long travel suspension would also be more engaging + allow better jumping

The throttle probably isn't you. The k989 is known for having a stiff drivetrain. There are videos on how to fix it.

I am sorry, you look like you really enjoy this and that’s important, but I am sick of RC KZbinrs talking up WLtoys and Banggood. No serious RC person would spend their real money on this junk. You get free cars (WLtoys) from Banggood and would never upset your free supplier. I have bought 2 WLtoys on the recommendation of KZbinrs. The 12428 broke on first run in my back yard (no bashing), wrote many emails to Banggood with no answer, no help. That car was in the trash can 1 week later. Banggood is not a reputable company, you can easily research it. I had to call AmEx for help, they did not get a response from Bangripoff either. Thank god for AmEx. Awhile later I was hearing again from KZbinrs about a new and better WLtoys purple 1/12 scale truggy that you said was great to. It was no different and no better. More metal is not always good if it’s cheap crap metal. Shock towers bent so easily, amd by three easy runs it needed several pieces for repair. Luckily I did not buy from Bangripoff and got a refund. Getting free stuff puts you in a bad position of having to say things to not piss off your free supplier. It is sad that you and others give in to the lure of Bangripoff. At least a few RC KZbinrs refuse free stuff so they can be honest in their reviews. I have a channel on a different topic, I am offered free stuff all the time and refuse it. I am not afraid to be honest and use my own money. STOP THE BANGRIPOFF BANDWAGON PLEASE AND WLTOYS which they own a majority stake. You get what you pay for, and WLtoys are junk and will not last any length of time without putting more money into it than you paid for it. Stay safe, search your souls and go back to reviewing RC’s you have to pay for. I look forward to your purchase of an XMax that I know your saving for, that will be a great review.
