Are the new popular, cheap and ready-to-run RC cars like the WLToys 124019 & 144001 really the end of all Tamiya budget kits and entry-level buggies like the Tamiya TT-02B? Is it controversial? Something new? Should we be worried? ... Or did the train actually leave the station 20 or maybe even 40 years ago?
Would love to hear what YOU think in the comment section!

Great video, Mikael, and a very well thought out argument / discussion. I agree with your general conclusion. Other RTR brands have been available for many years, and yet Tamiya is still going strong with it's focus mainly on kit 1/10 RC cars. The markets for each are aimed at different types of hobbyists. You only have to look at the many forums to see so many people talking about their Tamiya builds, hop-ups, modifications, paint jobs, tips and tricks, and photo's and videos of their beloved cars! This doesn't really exist at the same level for the Chinese RTR market sector. As long as there are people out there who enjoy creating their own cars, and making them individual, (or personalising them), there will always be a market for Tamiya. Hope your Sunday is a good one, mate! :)
@NordicRC

Hi Mark! Thank you! And I think you summed it all up much quicker and better than my endless waffling 🙂 Yeah, different markets, or else Tamiya entry-level buggies would have ended already in the 00’s if not before. I think the enthusiasm about modifying, personalizing etc. have also gone into the Chinese brands, like WLToys and WPL etc though. But I still think there is no need to worry, as they can happily co-exist. My guess is that there are new entry-level Tamiya cars for many decades - with or without included ball bearings 😅 Have a great Sunday, my mate. The ☀️ is shining here ☺️

I had a Hilux RC car from Nikko it was my first RC car without a cable to the controller and I loved it and used it daily for many years. The problem came when it got smashed up. I could not re build it I just kept it in a broken state. But if it was a tamiya I would have found parts and could always find part's so for me RC cars are not a disposable hobby. This is the reason the first RC car for my kids is going to be a tamiya so that it would be around for there kids and I could fix it and hopefully my kids can learn to fix it.

I think the prices you covered are a little out. I’ve just looked up a RTR XB dual edge is £272.19. I can get the WLToys 124019 for £83.09. Yes it’s hard due to different countries and shipping to be exact but it’s not even remotely the same even if you use a possible Tamiya sale price. Also like you covered it comes with no bearings, battery or metal parts at all so this extra cost has to be taken into account and makes the Tamiya even more expensive. As for durability the 124019 is stronger than the TT02B. You can bash the 019 way more than the TT02B. I’ve experienced them myself. WLToys has just put out a 1/10th RTR for £113! So it will be interesting to see how that one goes. When you break a single part on a Tamiya you have to purchase a full tree most the time. WLToys you just purchase what you need and at a fraction of the price. I was missing a single part on a Fighter Buggy RX that I have just built and to replace it was going to cost me £22! The kit was only £107 Tamiya will be loosing more and more unit sales as the competition keeps improving and that is the slow death for Tamiya’s entry level business. Don’t get me wrong I love my Tamiya kits and I’m a big fan but when I look at it from a business point of view, it’s not looking bright. Tamiya will be making most of its profits from its consumable business, paints and what have you. Great video and an interesting debate, keep up the cool vids. 👍🏻
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, bro. Yeah, it's an interesting debate. Only time will tell though, but I do not imagine as bleak a future as you :-) As said in the video I think either the interest in Tamiya entry-level kits will stay the same as it is now (no matter the price, the specs) or Tamiya will step up. They got such a strong brand that I think they can survive no matter what. The cheap high-spec RTR models has been around for many years. The situation with the WLToys 124019/18 is nothing new. I also think the price you mentioned for the TT-02B (RTR) is more than a little out. You are a little confused I think. Over 300 euro/USD for a TT-02B? :-) He he. Let me explain: The Dual Ridge XB is discontinued for a couple of years now, and what you get in your search today are prices for the last NIB's that remains on the market. And when things are discontinued the prices rise fast, if there's still a market for the item. Believe me, I've seen a lot of DF-02's, TT-02B's, DT-03's, WT-01's etc. selling for around 100-120 €/$ or just above over the years. Even a lot of the classic re-release XB models. I don't think they where quite popular so they where more often on sale than not. I am not lying about the prices. I got 6-8 XB models for around that price myself. Too tempting sometimes. I even got a couple of high-spec brushless Tamiya Levants for around that price. So the prices I mentioned is more than accurate. So the comparison with the XB models are based on the prices when they where around. As you probably know the XB line have been replaced by the XSA line now. I don't think they will go far too, prices are a little high in the beginning (especially now that they come without the radio and servo) but I have already seen the first couple of sales on them, even for under 100€. About the spare parts, I mentioned the problem about the parts-trees myself in the video. The cheaper brands win easily here. But Traxxas etc. have sold their spare parts separately for years and years, and I haven't seen Tamiya change. And all the different versions of the TT-02B kits that are still coming out, tells me, that Tamiya still has a good business going on with that platform. Otherwise they wouldn't do it. Does that make sense to you? So, yeah, I still have the same opinion. I think Tamiya will survive easily over the next couple of decades, even without lowering the price or getting the specs up. If it was a giant problem for them, loosing the entry-level market, the beginners, the kids, they would have stopped their entry-level kit production years ago. Here in Denmark and Scandinavia I can definitely see that all the big hobby shops (that are selling to beginners/parents/kids) haven't really marketed Tamiya or sold any Tamiya kits for the last 10-20 years. They have been selling ready-to-run HBX, WLToys and Traxxas. And Tamiya is still here, pushing new releases. Will be interesting to see what will happen in 30-50 years from now. They might now be around by then (if they haven't changed). But I think everything will continue as usual for the at least next 10-20 years.

I just recently started building tamiya cars, i like the concept because i race quadcopters with friends and started this many years ago so we would build out own quadcopters and race against each other thru gates and really the quadcopter are about the same speed but if we are generally slow or fast we adjust the gates to suit...e.g we make the track tighter. So im not a huge 6s brushless rc car guy and so i like the tamiya emphasis on stock setup so all racers are equal...however i do have some concerns coming from aircraft that i dont really love investing in the brushed system any more if its 'out of date' because some of these brushed motors are getting up there in price with brushless motors, so rather invest on what has longer life and feels 'newer', so wish the tamiya cars came with a mild brushless setup, even if its not very powerful...instead of stock brushed motors.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC Жыл бұрын
Yeah. The Tamiyas are good for some friendly races. The newer Tamiya comes with a brushed/brushless ESC. So it’s quite easy to upgrade, during the build, to a mild and cheap (sensored) brushless motor. Consider the included motor as ‘free’. It doesn’t add too much to the price of the kit. But a brushless motor would. So easier and cheaper to get an own generic motor.

I bought a tt-02B kit a few years back, with brushless setup, servo, radio and battery. Yes I paid more money than WLToys. No i do not regret my choice. HOWEVER I have to said that latest Wltoys are becoming more and more interesting (copying LC Racing). Tamiya has been deaf to feedbacks for decades and that’s where the issue is: to my opinion, to stay in the game, all the entry level kits need oil shocks, ball bearings, and ditch the plastic transmission AS STANDARD.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 3 жыл бұрын
I think they will stay in the game no matter what. There is still quite much interest to their entry-level kits - not in any way sales compared to WLToys etc, but I think it is enough to stay in the game. So I don’t think they will change anything (in the near future anyway). I’m not too disappointed with their gears. Many of the Tamiya plastic gears are more durable than cheap metal ones. Only need to upgrade them if one puts in an insane motor or power source. And most of their buggy entry-level lines (TT-02B and DT-03) already come with oil filled shocks. But we could definitely need ball bearings and turn buckles. But Ai doubt it will happen as long as enough people are buying Tamiya.

Even though I own about 5 Tamiya cars, I've never had the pleasure of building a kit from the ground up. I bought a number of vintage cars last year after finding my dad's Super Hornet, and I've certainly had a blast fixing them up and rebuilding them. My current favourite to drive is a Stadium Blitzer, that according to the etching on the bottom, was originally built in 1993, 4 days after my 4th birthday. I've had to frankenstein the rear shock mount, as both of the Blitzers in my lot had cracked mounts, but it's just so much fun with a 16 turn Speedworks Monstermash that's as old as me. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested in grabbing something like one of those WLToys cars, but if I had to choose between a new Tamiya model and the WL, I'd probably still go with the Tamiya even if it cost a bit more.

While this video is about buggies, don't forget about the licensed onroad cars. Building and customizing licensed cars from scratch -- complete with custom paint jobs, LED lights, onboard action cameras, and even interiors and engine sounds -- while most people who do this use drift chassis, Tamiya just makes it possible with their TT02 and M05/06 entry level kits. The car you build is yours and there's nothing like it out there. I am pretty sure should WLToys start selling officially licensed makes their prices will go up to around the same price as Tamiya's.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that’s a very good point. Tamiya definitely has a large part of the market there. But they have also lost most of the crawler/truck market in the last 20 years, where people also are customizing. Both to Axial, RC4WD, Traxxas etc but also to (non-licensed trucks) WPL and the likes. But I also see a lot of RTR’s dominating there. But both markets, I think, is still reserved for hobbyists. The big market, the real entry-level and beginner market, where most cars are sold still belong to toy brands and the new cheap hobby-grade stuff like WLToys, HBX. But again, like you say, Tamiya still have a fair share of the kit market, and therefore it will be a long long time before they vanish.

As i got RTRs and some Tamiyas myself, i think there is a place for both of them. RTR gets you running fast and without much time spend. It brings ppl to the hobby. Many of my clubmembers starter with RTR vehicles but nearly every one of them bought at least onr Tamiya kit in the meantime. With kits you build a kind of relationship with your car. Also helps with repairs and maintenance cause you know every screw personally. I myself starter some 15 years ago with a TA-04S as my entry car in touring car racung in a local club. And i still got and it's still running. Got converted to rally but it's running. Even still got my WR-01 from that time. It's still loads of fun.

Very good points, I agree. I think Tamiya never has had a big share of the market for people’s first RC. Many in the 1980s started out with a Nikko or Taiyo or two and many today start out with a WLToys or two. And if they move on from there then they will most likely at some point get a Tamiya kit, or a Traxxas, Arrma RTR or whatever suits them the most. So cool classic Tamiyas you have. Also got a WR-01. Tons of fun. Thanks a lot for watching and the comment, mate.

Thank you great video, I agree with what you said, only down point is is that it seems to be mainly us who have the nostalgia from playing with them from back in the late 70's, 80's and possibly 90's, The question is are Tamiya laying roots for other kids to have the nostalgia like we did when they reach our age I think not anymore. We were definitely the lucky age group of the golden RC era in my opinion. Bring out new buggies with great names again and not just numbers.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah, been wondering about that too. Maybe WLToys will bring out an A959-B re-release in the year of 2055. But I must say I doubt it. I think many kids that have bought an A959 or similar in these days, use it in the category of ‘buy it, use it for a couple of times, throw it away or get a new one’. So in 30 years I don’t see the same nostalgia as with a Tamiya kit in the 1980’s that one saved up money for, built and run and repaired for years. Sadly. Yeah. We are the lucky age group when it comes to RC’s I think.

Well thought out chat Mikael. I think the main thing like you say is that so long as we are buying them, why would Tamiya change? If they have the market share that they want then they don't need to improve the specs or lower the prices. I'm not a fan of the Tamiya RTR's and have never bought one, mainly because building them is such fun. Also the fact that you can build improvements in from the start. It's a good talk, interesting topic! My story is a little weird but quite relevant to this: So I was child in the 80'ies and I had Tamiya. Fast forward to 2019, I decided to buy an RC car again, just for fun. I checked around on the internet and I ended up on Banggood, of course. I ordered a nice Feiyue and while I was waiting for it to be shipped, I went over to Teknikmagasinet and picked up a WLToys. So those were available to me, Tamiya seemed shrouded in mystery. In fact, I didn't actually properly know if Tamiya still existed, only found out a bit later and of course started buying Tamiya kits and building them, I felt I was back in the hobby again! The cheaper Chinese cars, yeah they are a lot of fun, and they are quite good, too. Long Scandinavian waffle from here also, ha ha, have a nice weekend there!
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when I got back to the hobby in 2013 I never saw any Tamiya products. So I got an HBX, or a couple, and a year after I discovered Tamiya. So Tamiya’s entry-level buggies aren’t really never entry-level. Most people start with something else, and if they continue, they discover Tamiya, or Arrma or Axial or whatever that appeals to them the most. So there’s definitely room for everything on the market and Tamiya will stay in business no matter how cheap the cheap brands get 🙂 And yeah, the cheap ones are fun too. Room enough for everything ☺️ I always enjoy some good Scandinavian waffling 😅 Have a great weekend too, bro.

China may have brought the price way down on RC, but in many ways they are ruining the hobby. There is way too much product being produced and it's starting to look like the Iphone sales model. Produce as many new products as you can and stop offering support for older product to force you to buy more new toys/models. A lot of the the new players in RC also aren't spending money on R&D. They're just cloning models of companies that spend the time and money to produce an amazing product. I think product like Traxxas is overpriced for what you get, but they have decades of trial and error behind them.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 3 жыл бұрын
I agree to a certain point, they, the cheap brands, do not bring any innovation with them. But they push the older brands to come up with innovation … Think about the Grasshopper and Hornet. Not a clever design performance wise, but a new way to design and market affordable buggies, that became extremely popular. So popular that all the toy brands of the 80s copied the set-up and style and also made a lot of money. But Tamiya still sold a lot of Hoppers for a decade or so. And even though the TRX-4 and others are copied in similar fashion today, Traxxas still sells a lot of TRX-4. Don’t think the big brands can get harmed unless they screw it up for themselves at some point. I think even ‘middle-brands’ can survive today. If you compare an LC Racing buggy that the WLToys base (copy?) their new buggies on, there’s still a gap between them, quality wise, and I bet always people that choose the quality.

Honestly, I wouldn't even compare the WLToys 124019 or 144001 to anything Tamiya makes, because Tamiya doesn't make any sub-1/10th scale 4WD buggies at the moment if you exclude their _non-RC_ Mini4WD line. The 104001 is far more comparable to the TT-02B. That being said, I don't consider it a threat in any way, even if it otherwise would be one. The 104001 is actually a _significantly higher end_ platform than the TT-02B or DF-03, being based on an XRAY XB4, but it also runs wonky electronics and to upgrade them you have to replace everything all at once, so while it's a cheap starter car it doesn't really _stay_ cheap.

Keep 'em running Mikael! At first you got me for a sec but as the video went on, it was all ok 😎 Yes, when you buy Tamiya branded stuff, you get QUALITY, If it was tools,paints, scale models etc. , you always know what to expect. In the scale model sector, there's many competitors with very good quality like Meng, RFM, MiniArt, HobbyBoss, Border Model (a new company), Dragon, Takom, ICM and Zoukei-Mura for example. Tamiya has still the best manuals imo. For me, WLToys are a bit tasteless and non-excitement giving, odorless as some say.

At Tamya price range can get lots of stuff from FS racing or ZD racing to. I got fs victory fro 162 eur (depending on day and store price is somewhere between 160-190 eur). For that You get 1/10 rtr brushless truggy with 3kv motor and 3s.. Spare and upgrade parts are cheap + readily available. These cars sell under quite few different names, jamara tigers are same thing as example. Only downside of it was servo that is bit weak but that's easy/cheap upgrade as they use standard 3 wire servos :)
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, exactly, lots of other cheaper brands to choose from, with higher specs than Tamiya for the same price. Been like that for a long time. So it’s not controversial or new. And Tamiya will probably continue selling their cars at the same price. ... Sounds like an awesome rig you have there. Must be fast with 3S 🙂

@@NordicRC I'm quite happy with it and yes, it is fast. Other downside is, by default, wheelie bar is useless (needs to be flipped around), lol. But it comes with Flysky gt6 controller/flysky receiver and battery is 6000mah by what's written on it (there's lots of text, lot of spelling mistakes and stuff that makes no sense). By my charger its bout 5500mah and last surprisingly well/over year abuse now. Its very easy/fast to disassemble to. Easy clean/repair, simplistic but quite sturdy. Can get from ali/bangood. If only tamiya will make their parts accessible by other site like banggood or aliexpress etc...(not just ebay, rcmart) parts are not always ready available for easy access even availability not to mention expensive given all factors. I shop nearly all my Tamiya parts at Tamico. And then there is EuroRC and Modelsport. And also Tony’s at eBay. Plenty of parts I think. But I agree with you. Could be good with even more worldwide dealers. One issue is also that Tamiya has so many cars out that the full selection of all spare parts and upgrades are difficult for dealers. But thanks a lot for watching, my mate.

Yeah RCMart have put prices up by 20-80% on all tamiya RC it could be the US $ but that's me i'm not paying $25 more for a lesser spec fire dragon than what I did 6 months ago for a full spec terror scorcher.
