You're a lucky man. I'd love to go back in time and work in that era of New York radio.

I love the cross-talk ! Where did you record this from ? I used to pick up WNBC in the winter when it started to get dark way down in Virginia and would pick up cross-talk from other stations ! I loved those days

I still pick up the 660 signal, here in Eastern NC. Of course, it's WFAN-AM another 50kW dinosaur that is quickly rotting and is already about as useful as tetas on a bull! Notice, WFAN-AM does not scratch paper on the NYC top line ratings. That's because WFAN's massive all-sports ratings machine is available on FM, as is ESPN Radio and other all-sports stations in NYC. So, what about all the WFAN fans in the other 2,000 miles in every direction covered by AM 660 that are not covered by their signal on FM 101.9? Well, in the radio business, a station couldn't care less about listeners beyond their home market. A local station in NYC is not going to, in any big way, sell advertising in Pennsylvania. Those days are over! Even WFAN's internet broadcast scored a .8 share in NYC's last ratings. WFAN-FM, the top sports signal in NYC scored a 2.8 share. However, that massive, old, expensive AM 660 signal did not show. I worked in radio for 30 years and I will always love it and be a radio geek. But, radio's heyday is way, way over and, it seems we are now working toward targeting people in old folk's homes who listen to Whitesnake. I seriously think 80s kids or, maybe 90s kids will be the last adult listeners to radio if something doesn't change. It will always be cool to be in NC and pick up an AM station from NYC, but those dying dinosaurs are expensive to run. Radio could have streamlined it's industry in areas like a useless, dying radio band (AM). Instead, it totally leaned on automation and got rid of its people.

This is brilliant as creating hype, ofcourse he made a name for himself in DC so psychologically if you're hearing this and simple (or not simple) you would be sucked in by thinking something big is happening. Brilliant, that guy is a genius, seriously

Stern made the transition better than the late Don Imus in the new politically correct era. Imus became frustrated and bogged down and apologizing often while Stern navigated the new changing times more comfortably. I loved Imus and appreciated his starting the shock jock mode but you have to give Stern credit in the tricky waters of changing times.
@willyoung45335 жыл бұрын
Uncle Elmer imus didn’t start it , he was primarily playing records when Stern was hired. Once Sterns style proved to be very successful in terms of ratings imus adopted/copied Sterns style.

@@willyoung4533 Bullshit, Imus was saying outrageous shit since the 70s.
@willyoung45334 жыл бұрын
@@jjccg9415 you’re wrong. He played records. He was a break man. He did bits as did many but nothing edgy or controversial. He was never called or considered a shock jock until much later in his career. “In 1968 he began his first radio job, at KUTY, in Palmdale, California. Three years later, he landed the morning broadcast position at WNBC, in New York City. Imus was fired from WNBC in 1977, then rehired, in 1979, remaining at the station until it left the air in 1988, at which time his show moved to WFAN, which took over WNBC's former frequency of 660 kHz. Following Howard Stern's success with national syndication, Imus in the Morning adopted the same model in 1993. Throughout his later career, Imus was labeled a "shock jock".”

They both sucked

Imus would sit on the floor and “audit” Stern for entire shows. Taking notes. He soon emerged as the first Stern-clone.

All of Howard’s earliest years are so god damn cringy. He was way too over the top and shot out of a cannon. The clapping makes me want to break my radio and his voice sounds like Kermit
@nedwart8 ай бұрын
That was the radio industry then. He did the same thing as everyone else, but different. Over time he found his voice and his lane, but he had to start somewhere. It was a long road to Fartman
