These clips were taken from a recording of WNEW (New York City's channel 5, now WNYW), March 23rd, 1985. It was "Academy Award Weekend," with movies hosted by Dina Merrill and Keir Dullea. This one was the "Channel 5 Movie Club," shown on Saturdays at 11pm, with "Mister Roberts" as the selection.
First up is a bump for the weekend event, then a commercial for Formby's Furniture Refinisher (with Homer Formby). It has a local chyron superimposed at the end, mentioning long-gone businesses Rickel, Pergament, TSS Seedman, and Channel Home Centers.
Next is a spot for Nexxus hair products, not local but maybe regional. It's awfully 80's, especially the yacht-rock jingle: "Nexxus gets you noticed... anywhere!" A short "West Side Story" promo follows, and then the C5MC scrolls some coming attractions (accompanied by Percy Faith's version of "Where Is Your Heart," from "Moulin Rouge"--the biggest-selling song of 1953!).
"Anchors Aweigh" is promo'ed next, with a title bump, and then the full promo for all Sunday's films. Dina and Keir do their hosting thing before a "Breakfast at Tiffany's" promo and title bump. Matt Lauer, also now out of business, teases the next "PM Magazine," with a story on Mamie Van Doren.
Detailed instructions for how to join the Movie Club are read, and honestly I'm not sure if the announcer is Ed Ladd or a restrained Tom Gregory (I'm thinking the latter but hopefully someone with a better ear can tell me). Finally, Eastern Airlines maintained "We earn our wings every day"--until January 19th, 1991, anyway, when operations ceased for good.
By the way, clips from a movie shown earlier that day can be found here: • WNEW Stuff, March 1985
