Nashville was home to many of the Civil Rights Movements of the 1950s and 1960s including the lunch counter sit-ins, the silent march to city hall after the bombing of Z. Alexander Looby's house, and the Freedom Rides in 1961. We interview four of the original Nashville Freedom Riders with host John Seigenthaler to answer questions about this period in history for the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides in this NPT original documentary "Freedom Riders: The Nashville Connection."
Interviews with the original Nashville Freedom Riders include Dr. Ernest “Rip” Patton, Susan Wilbur Wamsley, Dr. Catherine Burks-Brooks, and Matthew Walker Jr.

17:00 Catherine Burks-Brooks is iconic! Sadly, the news of her recent passing, was the first time I learned about her. I learned she was profoundly fearless from SUCH a young age in SUCH a dangerous time and place. She bookmarked taking final exams with organizing sit ins and helped keep the Freedom Rides going. She was delightfully petty to Bull Connors face, in his vehicle LOL. She was subsequently kicked out of school. Survived parchment prison and still dunked on folks in court (and bull Connor’s dumb racist ass) after release. I’m so happy I came across this interview with her. She’s even better than I imagined.

Doesn't mean that we can't have empathy and compassion for those brave humans that did and still endure similar civil rights atrocities. Untold numbers of people, young and old, were hanged for less than these acts of peacefully pursuing civil rights (i.e., the Mississippi 3, Vernon Dahmer, Charles Eddie Moore, Henry Hezekiah Dee, Denise McNair (11 yo), Addie Mae Collins (14 yo), Carole Robertson (14 yo) , and Cynthia Wesley (14 yo), etc, etc. Etc)
