And when you think about it, Maynard was holding on to The Grudge until that exact moment. He was pro'ly holding on the Grudge even as a baby. Too much? Just sayin it's a BIG scream.

I’ve always imagined this song to be from the perspective of the drug/addiction. Crawl away from me after you hit bottom? Maynard was known and recognized for his screams before he blew his vocal cords singing Ticks and Leeches off of the Lateralus album. The guy’s range was insane. The original Tool bassist was Paul D’Amour, he helped establish Tool’s bass driven sound. He wrote about half the songs on the next album (Ænima) before he quit. He didn’t agree with the direction the band was taking. Justin Chancellor joined, helped finish the album, and helped the group continue in their new direction.

That's what I'm getting out of it the more I listen to it. Could also be the verse are bridge is from the perspective of the addiction and the chorus could be from Maynards perspective. The lyrics "if I could I'd stick a knife in," definitely sounds like from the perspective of someone trying to get over the addiction but can't quite kill it off. Appreciate the comment 💯
@zambukee46882 жыл бұрын
@@Skullzrapper i feel its more so from the angle that the addiction or thing that drug him down to the bottom only wants to do harm and dosnt care what you truly want you can see that in the verse as a whole. " What you tryin' to say Is you don't want to play What you want And what you need Don't mean that much to me I can see your back is turning if I could I'd stick a knife in"
@AlabasterJazz2 жыл бұрын
This is a great interpretation, especially based on the narrative of the album. I always put it in the perspective of a bad relationship finally ending (which I guess a substance abuse relationship definitely counts). I know from experience that when a toxic romance turns sour, the vitriol can get out of control, on both sides, and that's what I get from this.

You really need to listen to the Opiate EP which released before undertow. Jerk off from that EP was my favorite song for many years and the scream in that song is absolutely primal.

Paraphrasing here but Maynard has said that he sometimes chooses a topic he has some negative emotion for and instead of attacking it, he attacks himself from its perspective. This may be one of those switcheroos where the lyrics are from the perspective of the addiction responding to him trying to quit it.
@Skullzrapper2 жыл бұрын
I also feel like some lyrics are him projecting his own shit onto others. Or at the very least can be interpreted that way. Not in this song necassarily but I've noticed it in a couple 💯

TOOL grows on you. A lot of songs are absolutely mind blowing right out of the gate, they just get better over time. But some of the songs are definitely a slower burn, you might even dislike them at first, but after a few, or a few dozen listens, your whole perspective will change and they'll become your favorites.

I would argue that bass sound first makes it appearance in early Nirvana shows circa ‘88/89. Blew off Bleach etc. TooLs first ep came out in ‘92 I wouldn’t be surprised if Adam Jones saw Nirvana live before he formed TooL.

The intro; "Oruro Tierra de Ensuenõs". Oruro is a city in Bolivia a few thousand feet above sea level, known as the Land of Dreams. The song was played by a pipe band that just happened to be there in the neighbourhood of Sound City Studios, whom the guys recorded. Nirvana's Nevermind album was also recorded there, as well as numerous others.
@thanospat64002 жыл бұрын
I've always loved that intro yet, hardly anyone mentions it or let alone knows the background of how it came to be on the album. I believe that if they didn't go with Massey, opiate & undertow wouldn't have sounded anything liked they do.

Yo please if you are going to do tool in order can you please make sure you go back and do opiate and also you have to do the album salival it’s was a live album of mostly covers but like you have to do that on your journey Don’t skip any And also there are a few songs you have to listen to part one and 2 together (Aenima album) H./Intermission/jimmy (together) (Lateralus album) Eon blue apocalypse/the patient Parabol/parabola (together) Mantra/schism (together) Disposition/reflection/triad (together) (10000 days album) Wings for Marie / 10000days (together) Lost keys / Rosetta stoned (together) Intention/right in two (together) You will make a lot of tool fans realy happy if you do them the way it is meant for to be listened to because a lot of people consider tools later albums to be one journey every some in a row but there are some songs that are meant to be listen to together ! Enjoying your videos a lot keep ‘em comming hopefully you see this comment up vote so he see :)

i wouldn't necessarily say it's purely about drug addiction. Honestly, it's about a toxic relationship where you don't care how your partner feels, as long as you own them. An addiction to someone that destroys the other person
