To comment on the idea that the bass is more in the forefront with older Tool than with the stuff since Justin joined... I think Tool has just always had more of a bass presence than most other bands, that includes even later Tool. In a lot of bands the bass player seems to just be supporting the key of the song and contributing minutely to the rhythm, but with Tool every member is like a master of their own domain, that includes the bass. I think most people aren't used to bands where there's actually a seemingly even split among members for the driving instrument(s) in their songs. Newer tool has several songs where the bass is the driving feature of the song like in Schism or The Pot. And I think something that often gets overlooked is there are actually quite a few bass solos in Tool songs where I think a lot of people just assume it's Adam on the guitar since Justin's not shy about using effects nor about utilizing the higher strings on the bass to create some un-bass sounding tones.
@robdaniel32114 жыл бұрын
Paul drove the bass as a rhythm guitar or an extension of one. Justin brings it as an independent instrument

@@bax7619 it is deeper than you think. The song is as about realising and coming to terms with parental and societal expectations, for people that have made themselves or have been made out to be the ‘hero’ but in the end the fail to live up to the unrealistic expectations set upon them and there’s a nice message of never giving up despite your shortcomings and learning to accept help from others.

Great reaction as usual guys! I think one of the main reasons the bass might seem to stand out more on the older Tool stuff is twofold: Paul D'Amour was a guitarist friend of Adam's that switched to bass guitar to play with Tool, so his bass parts were structured very " guitar-like" and didn't function like a "traditional" bass line would. Besides providing the low end, Paul liked to interact with Adam's parts almost as much as with Danny's. Secondly, the two releases with Paul were produced by Sylvia Massy, who has a VERY different style than David Botrill & Joe Barresi, who produced the albums that feature Justin. That combined with Paul's bass tone being much drier and in your face than Justin's, and you get the results you hear on early Tool. They both have merit, and for those that love the rawer sound, early Tool is hard to beat. Sorry for the long post, I just really love this fucking band! I'm predicting a LK/RS reaction next week. If so, buckle up my friends! 🤯 If not, I'm happy you're here and jamming to the best band to ever expand minds...Spiral Out, boys! 🤘🌀🤘

One thing you have to think about with Justin on Bass is that a lot of the riffs you hear from Aenima and beyond is that some of the riffs you hear are bass riffs when you think you are hearing guitar riffs. And the way that Adam & Justin play off of each other time wise is something only they can do. Haven’t seen a collective list of what you guys have listened to by them. But if you haven’t played “Intolerance” from Undertow yet, y’all should do that.

Paul is a good bass player indeed, and in fact TOOL was a great band in the post grunge/alternative metal scene. But Justin is what made TOOL, the TOOL. His contribution has been huge and fundamental. He is not only a great bass player but a genius in composition. This is the difference between the two. If Paul had remained, today we would speak of TOOL as one of the many bands of the 90s

Part of what helps Paul's bass to cut through the mix (aside from just being that kind of tone), is that the earlier stuff is more "bare-bones" so to speak. This is not me saying that's better or worse, just a difference I hear. If you listen to then and now, in the older stuff you'll hear less in the way of multiple guitar parts and other sounds. IIRC, in the old days they had said if they couldn't replicate it live, they didn't want to record it. Nowadays with all the electronics they have available, they can replicate all the other stuff live (mostly). I'm sure guitar parts were doubled to thicken the sound, but there weren't different guitars going on in the left vs right speakers (both doubled) with a solo on top, synth parts layered low in the mix but still filling sonic frequency, Danny's electronics, etc. With basically one vocal, one guitar, and one drum part it becomes much easier to not bury the bass in the mix. Whether he knows it or not, I believe this is part of why Justin uses so many effects (where Paul rarely used any). The effects give Justin a chance at being heard since he's also not using something as naturally aggressive sounding as a Rickenbacker. Not gonna lie, I've built a JC fanboy pedalboard (minus 3 pieces), and playing their songs with all those effects is also a ton of fun.

The more I listen to early tool, the more I found it lacks alchemy between everyones. I mean each of them are very talented player but it's like they play for themself, like everyone is playing their own solo at the same time. With the arrival of Justin on ænema, their sound became more intricate and each instrument function with more harmony. It's like a sport team full of star, and each player learn how to backup to synchronise with other and the team is better as a whole.

When you guys finish reacting to all the audio tools songs, you can then react to some of the live versions of the songs man! Also there are two solid live versions of the cover "no quarter " when they had Paul (I think it's the 93 live video which you can find), and one after Justin joined (1998 live). But it's the performances on both versions that are nuts. That and the pushit salival one where you could see how nuts that live performance is is also sublime. The earlier version with Paul: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6CYpaiHi7xka9k And the 98 version with Justin. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGanf5V_ltWDZ7c. Both are awesome that you should react to both versions in the same video to see how both bassists add a flair to the song. And then, the best live version of Pushit/salival. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnjFlp9mg7-jjtE
