As a fellow Melburnian, I have nothing by praise for John Williams. He is my inspiration. John Williams performed this piece many times, on many different guitars. Here he is playing a different classical guitar design, by Smallman, which has a very fast reacting top. I think it suits his idea of classical performing. He is using it to play in the impeccable higher tempo with less effort. It's not everyone's style, taste, or ability, but he makes it sound impressive and he is the best in that type of faster tempi adaptations. He is so precise, that you can tune your metronome using his playing. He also changed some fingering and some chords, so that he doesn't need to slide over 6-7 frets in a fast-paced tempo and destroy cohesion of the movement. In the middle section of the piece, too, he makes the theme feel more like a dance, etc. so he understands the subtleties of each part and delivers them cohesively. John thinks in terms of different themes within the same piece, and he audibly adjusts the mood in each, then transitions between them impeccably, as in best storytelling. It is not easy to play an impeccable tone, impeccable higher tempo, deliver all those nuances etc.
