Disturbing how close these are to descriptions of Bigfoot. I knew that the wildman existed in european folkore, but I didn't realize it was thought of as a species or race, I had thought it was just one individual being.

Thanks for this delightful presentation. There is in Old English (c.450 - c.1100 CE) the “wuduwasan”, derived from “wud”, wood, and “wasse” to exist, one who exists in the woods, obviously precursor to the woodwose. There have always been wild people since there have been civilised people with which to compare them against. The Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh, perhaps 4,000 years old, has Enkidu, a wild man, encountered as civilisation encroaches on the wilderness. 1,900 years ago Tacitus wrote of hunter gatherers who lived beyond those who themselves lived beyond the Germans. They ate plants, didn't wear clothes but animal skins (true clothes had to be made of cloth, i.e. woven), had no horses, weapons of war, or houses, living under makeshift shelters of branches, tipping their hunting arrows with bone for want of iron. Archaeological finds show hunter gatherers continued to pursue their lifestyle long after farming extended over much of Europe, presumably dying out or assimilated, perhaps only living on in myth. One interesting thing about modern wild human cases, known as isolates, is even as children they grow hair over their bodies. John Ssebunya, the “monkey boy of Uganda” who survived with monkeys being found aged about seven was so covered in hair, as seen in photos, he had to be shaved all over. Now an adult his skin is smooth and hairless. This has been reported historically but in his case it's been reliably attested. Finally, the 5th century BCE Carthaginian explorer Hanno records reaching an island off Africa inhabited by wild people covered in hair, the majority being women. His interpreters said they were called Gorillae, meaning "tribe of hairy women", from this we get the word gorilla.

Thank you for a pleasant video. I m quite sure that the Wildman is the same as Sasquatch/Bigfot/Yeti. Differs slightly depending on which area they live in. Just like Humans. I also think that the European ones are inbred with a rather big percentage of Human DNA and are therefore not as huge as the American, Scandinavian or Russian version. There are many sightings in the Pyrenees. Also some in Poland, Germany and in the Alps. Even in England I heard, quite recently.

The Wodewose is one of the many names given to these large hairy humanoid creatures, it is known as Wodewose in England while in Australia it is known as Yowie, Yeti in Nepal, Yeren in China, Hibagon in Japan, Batutut in Vietnam, Almas in Russia, El Sisimito in Mexico, Sasquatch in Canada, and Bigfoot here in America.
