The editor will have his/her job changed a bit to making sure AI translation mistakes do not get through and it reads like correct English. No Translation AI is perfect so it will make mistakes that the editor will have to catch and correct so they might have to know both Japanese and English. For how their works read afterwards will feel different as AI translations read different from human translations of a book they just want to get done and over with not changing a thing which are different from activist translations.

They unironically think that taking part in localizing something and totally butchering its original intent so it ""sits better with current times and audiences"" somehow ties them to a piece of writing's creation in any conceivable way. Most localizers have never created anything their whole life, they can only leech off the original works and effort of others.

They would proudly and wholeheartedly agree with you on that. In their worldview, _all_ art is inherently propaganda. Even if the creator didn't make it that way on purpose, they still did it subconsciously without realizing it. Therefore, anything that isn't their (good and correct) propaganda must be the enemy's (evil and wrong) propaganda by default, and it's their moral duty to stop it from corrupting the stupid, impressionable masses. If they can't "fix" it, they'll just destroy it. I remember one of the big localization companies buying the localization rights to some anime they found offensive just so that _nobody_ could localize it.

Please temper your expectations. This is just the beginning. (Shogakukan also has two japanese conglomerates that promotes DEI investment throughout the entrie Anime and Manga industry.) Also, they're doing the same thing as Crunchyroll. (They're firing a bunch of localizers, so that the AI is going to be doing the translation. There's an 80% chance of it being woke considering that Crunchyroll is a subsidiaries of Sony in California. Which means they're making the subtitles and translations woke once they train it. Mark my words.) I'll keep my expectations very low if some DEI investor hurt the industry. (I might have to archive a bunch of manga in that case.)

It's not just that Shogakukan is embracing woke politics and the AI usually gets fed woke programming, it's also that getting rid of the TRANSLATION phase of the release does not actually have an impact on the LOCALIZATION phase other than, perhaps, fewer localizers having work (which means that the ones who do retain jobs have MORE influence in the industry). Like Katrina has gone on the record saying that most of the localizers in the industry don't speak a lick of Japanese. They are given a translation to check and tweak to fit the needs of the project (in a perfect world this would mean capturing character voice and nuance and making a line that sounds good and is accurate to the translation while remaining timed to the animation or in a manga fitting comfortably inside the speech bubble). By removing the human translator and feeding the text into a MTL model that only removes the phase of the translation where the translator has eyes on it and also that means that the translator won't be able to sort of "pre-filter" for things that a localizer wouldn't catch (the word "偽善者" is my personal pet peeve) and also if the localizer comes to one particular conclusion but isn't sure if that would actually work for the line, they don't even have the option of double checking with the translator to ask about what precisely the Japanese is saying.
