Wolves are skillful hunters, and large, hoofed ungulates like deer and elk are generally on the menu. But scientists increasingly recognize that these keystone predators have an exceptionally varied diet partaking in everything fish to fruit!
Even so, Wolf Conservation Center webcam watchers were were surprised to catch Mexican gray wolf Trumpet in a rather unexpected culinary endeavor today. You might think it's just another day in the pack, but what transpired was nothing short of astonishing. Not only did Trumpet opt for a nutritious detour of leafy greens, but the acrobatics she displayed in acquiring her 'salad' were nothing less than a marvel of nature's agility!
Remember, this isn't your average wolf - Trumpet is a mother of six newborn pups , and only three weeks postpartum. So enjoy seeing Trumpet defying the norm, showcasing her exceptional athleticism, and highlighting the remarkable adaptability of these keystone predators.
Tune in to the WCC webcams anytime, and experience the surprising world of wolves, where expectations are always delightfully exceeded.
The WCC, a 501c3 non-profit organization in South Salem, NY, is one of a network of facilities participating in the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan - a bi-national initiative whose primary purpose is to support the reestablishment of Mexican gray wolves in the wild through captive breeding, public education, and research.
For more information about wolves and the WCC's participation in wolf recovery, please visit our website at www.nywolf.org.

Wow. I have never seen wolves eat leaves. Berries and grass, but this is a first. I am thinking it is early spring and the leaves are fresh and not bitter. Awesome sight.

They also help them prevent digestive issues since meat and stuff doesn't usually have a lot of fiber

Ich habe ein Wolfmix aus der Tierrettung. Mein 7. Hund alle waren aus der Tierrettung. Mein Jack frisst Hainbuche , klettenlabkraut Blätter von der Sonnenblume Spitzwegerich und ganz selten Gras. Also ursprüngliche Instinkte. Hatte ich bei keinem anderen Hund. 🐾🐾❤️

Hmm it’s hard to get a good look at the tree leaves but I think it may be an american beech, which if that’s the case, beech bark and leaves contain a substance effective for ulcers and reducing the inflammation of dysentery. Leaves are also soothing to the nerves and stomach. Maybe she wasn’t feeling well and took a nibble of the leaves? That’s my theory, I could be mistaken since I don’t know for sure what type of tree that is.

I was wondering the same. I own several Shiba Inu’s (very closely related to wolves) and one of my females stands on her hind legs just like this to reach the low branches of a sassafras tree in our back yard. It is a tree they used to make root beer from and can also be used to extract saffrole which is a precursor to mdma that can increase serotonin. Native Americans said to watch and learn from the wolf - I think it’s amazing they instinctively know about the healing powers of plants.

It is the first time I see a wolf eating vegetables to purge itself like dogs???? According to what the description says, it is an omnivorous diet..??? This particular species of wolf incorporates vegetables into its diet??
@stanfordpines972
@stanfordpines972 Жыл бұрын
wolves are actually omnivorous as a species and not carnivores! they consume a variety of plants like berries as well as meat.
@Lovedrawing1
@Lovedrawing1 Жыл бұрын
At some point I read that canines typically consume the stomach contents of their prey, to get the vegetables. I guess that's also why it's so common for dogs to eat grass
@catherinebaldwin6580
@catherinebaldwin6580 Жыл бұрын
I believe most canids and vulpes are omnivorous. Well, technical they're meso-carnivorous. That means 50% to 75% of their diet is meat and the other 50% to 25% are bugs, fungi, and plants. Stray to far on those percentage, and they can get unhealthy and sick.

The way Trumpet acts about halfway through makes me think there was something on that leaf that she didn't like. And I say this because every other bite she basically wolfs down (yes, I had to, leave me be) with little issue. And _six_ pups? Mama's in pretty good shape, especially if this is only 3 weeks afterwards.

I worry if tree leaves are toxic to k9s. What kind of tree was it? Maybe seeking relief for pregnancy nausea or grass alternative digestion assistance or that pregnancy hunger that just can't wait or just more/diverse nutrients for her unborn. Maybe she observed deer eating leaves and hungry enough to have learn by copying. She's precious 💕

That is a myth, kinda. Dogs, and most animals like cats, foxes, and wolves eat grass and the like for fiber. Meat as you can guess have very little fiber, and most dog food doesn’t provide enough.
