Great video and I appreciate your comments on the size and chew offs. I feel the same way about the speed of the 1/16. Down here in Idaho we have to use diverters on the snare for moose by catch protection. They have to extend 27 inches perpedicular to the snare opening. They are a pain in the *&%^. I think I could use your method but would have to weld the diverter made out of #9 wire to the snare extension. Will give that a try.

Idaho 2nd Gens thanks for your reply. Those diverters would drive me to drink.

I have been making some snares today and noticed a couple of things I wanted to get your thoughts on. I purchased some snares a few years ago from Paul Trepas, a BC wolf trapper with a good reputation of success and experience. So I have been duplicating his snare building approach with one exception. He uses whammy's to attach to the number 9 wire so the snare will come off the snare support when the wolf pulls.. His trigger is placed against the snare stops instead of against the cam as you have shown facing toward the seneker kill spring. I have found that if I attach the breakaway small hook end to the snare wire after the snare is assembled I get the S Hook to hang down instead of cocked up distorting the loop shape. He also uses two snare stops instead of one for extra strength.

Thanks for your feedback. Yes I know Paul. I met him about 5 or 6 years ago. I’ve watched all of his videos. I copied his construction of snares for quite awhile. That’s where I got the idea for 1/16” cable. I found that the whammies were an absolute pain in my ass. The number 9 wire had a hard time sticking into the whammies. I also made a 6 foot extension with a swivel like he does. It’s a good system. I just found with using 6 ft ext plus a snare plus number 9 wire to hang a snare from was a bit waste full. It also takes up more time to set up. Having said all that , they work. Every wolf I’ve caught in that set up was dead

Paul came down here with his wife last fall and did a 3 hour presentation on his trapping methods for our Federation for Wildlife Management organization. It was a worthwhile seminar. The whammies don't go on the no. 9 wire very good and agree that the amount of number 9 wire he uses is a bit much when it is run up the tree. With our requirement to use diverters off the number 9 wire for moose it makes for a lot of support wire to pack around. I like your method and will give it a try with diverters welded to the support wire.

Great video and thanks for the info. I do have a question about the tremclad pain you're talking about tho, doesn't that just put an obvious smell back on the snare after you have boiled them?
@Yukonhelibilly6 жыл бұрын
Ryan Alltus Thanks for your response. I find the Tremclad doesn’t have a smell at all. I spray it on in thin coats. Usually out side. After they are good and dry I hang them up in a spruce tree at my house until they go out on th trail. Boiling them in the baking soda really degreases. Gets the oils out.

Hey I'm a little confused on how u get exactly those lengths of #9 wire from cutting in half.
@Yukonhelibilly6 жыл бұрын
Justin woods it just works out to be about 4-5’

1/16" for wolves.????..….Seems way too light! Never hold 'em without pelt damage and a cut thought . 1/16" sure would be easy to hide though.
@Yukonhelibilly5 жыл бұрын
Muskrat Outdoors I’ve caught lots of wolves with this set up. Every single one of them are dead with in seconds. They cinch down way tighter than any other cable I’ve used. The ability to hide the 1/16 makes for perfect neck shots every time. Wait. I lie. I did have one chew off. I believe due to snow fall. Knocked the snare down then I caught wolf by the foot.
@MuskratOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
@@Yukonhelibilly Good to know! I have only caught one, in a foot trap, not a snare. I've snared a lot of coyotes though. You don't have trouble with that small of cable cutting their neck?
@Yukonhelibilly5 жыл бұрын
Never been an issue.

@@Yukonhelibilly Interesting! You seem to know your stuff. It makes me feel better about using some of my coyote snares on wolves. I have had neck cuts with small cable on coyotes. Thank you for the advice. Until this season, snares haven't been legal here for wolves. Foothold only.
