In this Wolff Responds, Prof. Wolff critiques Biden's Student Loan Forgiveness Plan. He argues that the program is inadequate and doesn't solve anything. Higher education continues to be unaffordable for so many, and points out that the system is grossly unfair for students who have no choice but to borrow. Lastly, Wolff explores some of the social consequences that the debt relief plan are likely to yield.

Those crumbs being thrown out by Biden do nothing but turn the money we’ve been priced gouged out of into a loan payment. From 2018’s Trump tariffs & the past two years of corporate greed under the guise of the pandemic, the increases on consumer goods, cars, rent and food, have easily cost the average american well over an extra 20k

this almost reminds me of the Ancient World, especially the Roman Republic. Politicans would Cancel debts the poor had raked up during times of war and famine buying food and repairing their properties in order to get elected, but they would never change the systems that caused these famines and wars and put the poor into debt in the first place, because then they couldn't do it again.

My mom started college at 35yo and did nights and weekends for over 20 years to get her associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees. She just retired at 70 years old with over $100K in student loan debt. But I've also witnessed what a moron she is with her finances, and I watched her rack up 6-figures in credit card debt over the last forty years. So I have little sympathy for her in that regard. I've also witnessed how 40+ years of doctor-enabled opioid addiction have ruined my mom in other ways. That is why she went to college in the first place -- so she could get a job with health insurance to fund her doctor-enabled opioid-addiction. Not to mention, her neglecting-absence on nights and weekends allowed the opportunities for me to be abused by other people. Anyway... I, and other people in her life, have tried to get her to stop taking opioids. We know she doesn't actually need them, because we know that her medical condition, for which she was originally prescribed opioids over 40 years ago, has modern-developed treatments. But, since the opioids are prescribed by a doctor (who gets financial kickbacks from the drug companies to keep people addicted), my mom doesn't think there's a problem. I, and other people in her life, have explained to her how miserable she is and how miserable she is to others. We've told her how people have cut her out of their lives because of her addiction and misery. But she doesn't care. And she isn't too ignorant to see the correlations between herself and a regular drug addict, but her addiction has turned her into a liar and a manipulator like a regular drug addict and she pretends not to understand. So I have very little sympathy for her in that regard, too. Unfortunately, my stupid mom, and millions like her, have voted for the right-wing hellscape in which we live. And even though I lack sympathy for well-paid, over-consuming, yet wasteful individuals like my mom, that doesn't mean that I don't have a disdain for the corrupt, wealthy-class right-wingers who have enabled and benefited from the collective suffering of working-class people who are better than my ignorant mom. Sorry for hijacking your comment with mostly-unrelated, and definitely unsolicited, material.

Exactly. Ultimately, rich Americans are seeking a plutocracy in an undeveloped country (backwards, declining) for the US. Because an educated workforce is necessary for a developed country. So if they seek to withhold education from the non-rich, then they are also moving us towards being an undeveloped country. You can't have it both ways. But of course, the goal of the rich and powerful is an uneducated workforce that they can better control and deceive. And I think, as usual, they can't see the forest for the trees--the consequences of their short-sighted decisions.

You don’t need to go to college to be a productive member of society. The only reason you should be in college (where the ROI makes sense) is if you want to be a lawyer, engineer, medical professional, or maybe a business professional (manager, accountant, etc.) Everyrhing else can be done at a two year college, trade school, or is just a joke. Too many kids were and are being told they have to go to college before they know what they want to do.

I am 70 years old. I started with $100 from the Kiwaniis Club which paid for one full term at the junior college. I paid for all the rest of my college education one class at a time and took forever to get through. but it was possible. For young people today, it's not possible to do it that way! Nothing worked out for me- my ADD was worse than my middle school special ed kids so I gave up teaching. After 5 years making minimum wage getting supervision in the mental health field- I found out that I was not getting credit as I was an MEd and all supervisors were MSW. (Lost my house and had to move out of the area) By then memories from my childhood came back to haunt me and I couldn't work anymore because of C-PTSD, DID, and ADD. By the time I felt I had enough recovery to go back to work, no one would hire me- gaps in employment and age-. How would I be paying for it if I had student loan debt?!?! Now???? the problem today is finding a doctor. There aren't any- just nurse practitioners who couldn't afford medical school. I know five people who had major heart problems from the NPs at one location. I recognized how they had messed up my prescriptions. The pharmacist wasn't going to fill the prescriptions until I convinced him that's not how I planned to take them. He agreed that I knew what I was doing and let me have them filled. People are dying because we can't get real medical doctors. So wrong. Can you imagine how an NP would feel learning about patients who have died because of the NPs lack of knowledge?

This "forgiveness" does nothing for me. I borrowed $80k (through to master's degree), have been paying monthly since the mid-90s, and now my balance is $116,000. So what if $10,000 comes off? It's all interest anyway. Plus, I have to pay taxes in my state on the "forgiveness" (which also doesn't make sense because it won't be "income" until the year of loan satisfaction. My month-to-month cash flow will not change by a penny. Ultimately, it's the loan guarantor who benefits and of course the state I live in. The borrower never sees this money. Only those close to paying their loans off will feel any benefit.

Best way, by far, to bring costs of education down, has two legs. (1) Phase out government involvement in education. The exorbitant cost of a university degree is the direct result of government subsidy. (2) Don't enrol if you can't afford it. It's called consumer boycott, and it literally forces prices down. "They have to borrow". In a free market system, nobody HAS to anything, least of all borrow. The video ignores the fact that a decision to borrow, is a decision that comes with a commitment. I get that Prof Wolff is dedicating his life to thinking of ways to have more fairness for everybody. Let me point out that forcing others to bear the brunt of your unwise commitments, can not be conceived as fair. As for Biden's make-believe 'solutions', I agree with the criticism in this video.

Yes I would love for you do go more in depth. I would also like to expand on the two student scenarios that you briefly mentioned. There are at least three classifications of students; students who come from poverty and take out a majority of loans every year, those who receive scholarships of some sort, and those whose parents pay for their education. The student in poverty needs scholarships but they have to compete with other students also needed money. The result is a very few number of students actually get the scholarship they need. This is is what Dr. Dean Spade related to as Charity work, deciding which group of poor stude to help over others. Those if us who were outcompeted - other students poverty was worse than ours or grades were slightly better than ours - have to take out Pell Grants along with federal and direct unsubsidized loans. The student with the scholarship either doesn't have to pay as much - the average student taking out loans - or doesn't take loans out at all. This is f*cking nuts how we educate people. All this on top of the very real possibility of not finding work in our field for years and then being told to go back to school because we haven't had a job in the field. It's taken me almost 20 years to get two degrees due to poverty and two massive recessions. I finally earned two degrees at the same time in 2021 and have yet to be employed. All of my education was financed through Pell Grants, federal loans, and some (60k worth) of Sallie's debt trap. With Sallie taken care of (someone paid all of it off for me) I still owe $123,975 in federal loans, and no real possibility of getting into the field of Policy Afministration with a concentration in Applied Research Analytics (Data Science). What I would like to hear more from is why we tend to use the median when talking about income distributions, but we always use the average when discussing student loan debt. I've looked for the median indicator on student loan debt for months, no credible Institution is even trading the median and has no idea what the distribution of debt really is. If I could get into a Ph.D. program creating these I dictators I would but I can't. I'm broke, dorrodashing 12-14 hours a day and trying to pay off a $7,000 medical bill from being assaulted after a delivery. So please, Dr. Wolf, I think many of us would love for you to go deeper into our situation to bring a deeper understanding of what we truly face.

Prof Wolff never misses. Education is a basic human right bc learning is an inseparable part of living our lives. How are you supposed to know the difference between right and wrong if no one tells you? Going to college is volunteering time out of your day to learn what might contribute to the betterment of society. It's no one's fault for not knowing except the ones who don't try, and these students in debt tried. But what kind of world are we living in that doesn't recognize, but in fact overcharges you for trying? It's a self destructive and vicious cycle like everything else under capitalism. We only help the people who need it the least. And then give the responsibility for helping the poor to the people who benefitted from screwing them over in the first place.

Please cover all topics I could only pick one topic on the poll. My generation was sold a dream go to college and you'll have a good job. Many graduated after 2008 1st blow. Thus longer road to get to decent money (if you ever got there) at all . You cant file bankruptcy on it. If you default and try and get a home wont work even if no default if student loan is high you might not can get a loan at all ( high debt to income ratio) ...young ppl are wising up and realizing the lies the previous generation was sold and not doing school no cost benefit to them unless you're rich or scholarship and maybe thats where its headed education, buying a car, buying a home , affording meat will only be for the rich.

Like another viewer below, I'd like to see compounding interest explained. I'm also interested in the comparison with universities abroad. How are their programs and students financed? I might add another unfairness. I'm a seventy-three-year-old, long past her student loans. It was easy for me to pay them off. Why should succeeding generations not have the same? Or better still, no loans at all!

this argument he presents where he talks about the 'rich kid' who paid upfront for education and the 'not so rich kid' had to get a loan etc and "thats not fair he asserts". Well taking that approach one could also say that if all student debt loans are forgiven and the 'not so rich kid' has no more debt and he happens to be sitting on a bus next to a 'poor kid' whose family was too poor that the kid had to work just to help support his family and could not go to college . That "poor kid" could look at the "not so rich kid" and say "thats not fair" too I could go on and on and list many other unfair situations if student debt was forgiven.

Where would the President get the money? Discretionary spending is money formally approved by Congress and the President during the appropriations process each year. Mandatory spending, also known as direct spending, is mandated by existing laws. This type of spending includes funding for entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security and other payments to people, businesses, and state and local governments. The president can't crap money and thus cannot spend monies that has not been allocated by Congress.

The terms and conditions of each loan are known ahead of time. Your argument can also apply to mortgage. One person buys a house for cash and doesn't pay anything in interest, another person has to take a 30y mortgage and ends up paying X4 times more for THE SAME HOUSE. how is it different from student loans ?

It’s long overdue. People aren’t cattle or sheep: They will understand if we educate them. Though we need to educate (& learn) about all the nuance.

It was government intervention into students loans that drove the price of school up, and fueled the proliferation of useless degrees. The idea of “fair” in his scenario of the poor kid paying more verses the kid who paid up front is ridiculous. College is a lifestyle choice. If you are poor and need money for school it’s out there free of charge if you have the academic background. Student loans provide opportunities to those who don’t have the money to pay up front. When you buy a car some have to finance it, some pay cash. Is that unfair? Some go on vacation and put it on their credit cards, some pay cash. I’m at a point in my life where I pay cash for everything. When I was younger I had to save or finance if I wanted to buy expensive things. Wolff is so full of crap. Why do people listen to him?
